ヘミヘッドの起源

あまり聞きなれないアメリカのCycloneのボードトラックレーサー。

当時では主導権争いが激しく、また一番スピードの出るレースだから、最先端のメカニズムが取り入られ、１マイル３５秒の新記録も出した。

１９１４年のモデルはべベルギアのシャフトドライブによるＯＨＣで、ヘミヘッドの燃焼室を備えていた。同年には公道仕様の市販車もリリースしてプライスは＄３50（レーサーが＄３５０で、市販車は＄２５０という説もある）。

Cycloneは先進的すぎたのか、１９１７年には消滅してしまったが、このエンジンはもっと早い時期の１９０３年のPremier Special 。この画像では大きさが分からないが・・・。

This is the 1903 Premier Special built in Indy. It was built for the Vanderbilt Cup Race but was 300 pounds over the weight limit. Race cars then had a max weight limit! ４気筒で１４Ｌという巨大なエンジン。Cycloneと同じベベルギアとシャフトのカム駆動は後のメルセデスＧＰカーも使っている。今ではカム駆動にチェーン（コッグドベルトも）を使うのは当たり前だが、タイヤの駆動には使っているが、エンジン部品に使えるほどの耐久性がなかったのか。

    1901 HEMI engine, built by Truscott Launch and Engine Company, St Joeseph, MI.  Designed by HEMI inventor, Allie Ray Welch, Chelsea Manufacturing Company, Chelsea, MI.  Allie Welch and his brother Fred Welch founded the Welch Car Company in 1901 and built a two cylinder, 20 horse power car named the Welch until 1904 when they began building 4 and 6 cylinder cars.  This engine was built as a prototype to power a launch and is mentioned in the 1901 Truscott catalog.  Edward Truscott said of this engine that, “though it performed better than his other engines, the open values threw oil on the passengers and for that reason they discontinued production.  There are surviving examples of the improved 4 and 6 cylinder Welch engines, but this is the only version I can find of the 2 cylinder version.

最後に解答ですが、ヘミヘッドの起源がやっと分かった。半球形の元々の形状は大砲などの尾栓という説もある。
