わたしたちの小さな世界、イングランドでは・・・・・・
自然が望むものはみなみずから育ち、
珍しいものはすべて波からの貢ぎ物として手に入る。

わたしたちはアラビアの辛いスパイスの味を知っている、
それを育てる太陽に焼かれることもなく。
イモムシを飼わなくてもペルシアの絹を着て輝き、
ブドウを植えなくてもあらゆるワインを味わえる。

わたしたちは、富を求めて地面を掘るなど、疲れることはしない。
一番重いはずの金も、ここへは泳いでやってくる。
アメリカ人の収穫はわたしたちのものとなる。
わたしたちは海を耕し、異国の者が植えたものを刈りとるのだ。

Ours is the harvest where the Indians mow;
We plough the deep, and reap what others sow.
