10年くらい前のこと、東京のはずれで、
古い1DKくらいの貸し家に住んでいたニールは、
大家さんの許可を得て、家を完全につくり替えた。

ドアをつけ替え、壁に穴をあけて窓をつくり、
天井をはずしてロフトをつくり、外壁をすべてつけ替え、
屋根を半分はずしてかたちを変えた新しいものをつけて。

長老派、独立派、すべての教派が同じ信仰と祈りの精神
をもっています。この点ではみなが一致し、相違はない
はずなのですが、実際にそうではないのは嘆かわしい
ことです。信仰をもつすべての人は、本当の意味で
統一されています。これは、内面的・精神的なもので
あるがゆえに本当に栄えあることです。統一された形式に
則って信仰すること、これについては、社会の安定のため、
良心に適うかぎり、すべてのキリスト教徒が努力するでしょう。
しかし内面的な信仰にかかわることについて、わたしたちは、
同胞から光と理性に適わないことを強要されたいとは思いません。

Presbyterians, Independents, all have here the same
spirit of faith and prayer; the same pretence and
answer; they agree here, know no names of difference:
pity it is it should be otherwise anywhere. All that
believe, have the real unity, which is the most
glorious, because inward and spiritual. . . . As for
being united in forms, commonly called Uniformity;
every Christian will for peace-sake study and do,
as far as conscience will permit; and from brethren,
in things of the mind we look for no compulsion, but
that of light and reason.

再洗礼派という者たちがいるだろ。あいつらは自分と違う
信仰をもつ者の喉を、グサッ、とやりたがってる。長老派も、
長老派以外の者たちの喉をグサッ、ってな。第五王国派にしても
同じじゃないか？ そういう者たちに、力を与えるわけには
いかんのだよ。

I tell you there wants brotherly love, and the several
sorts of forms would cut the throats one of another,
should I not keep the peace. . . . Why I tell you there
be Anabaptists . . . and they would cut the throats of
them that are not under their forms; so would the
Presbyterians cut the throats of them that are not of
their forms, and so would you Fifth-Monarchy-Men. It is
fit to keep all these forms out of the power.
