愛とは何か？ 人智を超える偉大な愛とは？
どんな源からその不思議な性質が？
あらゆる点でこの世の原動力は愛。
愛がこの世のしくみを支えている。それですべてが
定められた場所・役割におさまる。
愛がすべてをつくり、生かす。
よくわかる、はっきりわかる、
愛が生まれる時と消える時。
でも愛が見えるのは心の目にだけ。しかも
ぼんやりとだけ。本当の愛の姿や理由はわからない。
不思議な自然の傑作、肌のきれいな磁石が
荒くれ者の鉄に愛されて、その妻となるのはなぜ？
剣はどうやってつくられる？ あの見えない炎は何もの？
人を斬る強い鉄を打ち負かす炎は。
（この世を美しくする）愛は人やものの性質を変える。
愛を感じる人・ものは、自分の体を忘れる。
月桂の冠の賢い人たちに訊きたい、
どうして蔦は樫の木を抱きしめる？
樫は恋愛にいちばん向いていないのに？
吹きつける風と同じくらい乱暴なのに？
どうして見えない極が方角の針を引きつける？
北極・南極の凍える寒さから熱い愛が生まれている？
羽あるものたちが軽やかに舞いあがるのはなぜ？
重いものが下、地球の中心に向かうのはなぜ？
命ないものも愛の法則に従う、でもその理由は、
人にもほとんど、ものにはまったく、わからない。

From what hid stock does thy strange Nature spring?
'Tis thou that mov'est the world through every part
And holdst the vast frame close, that nothing start
From the due Place and Office first ordain'd.
By Thee were all things Made, and are sustain'd.
Sometimes we see thee fully, and can say
From hence thou took'est thy Rise, and went'st that way;
But oftner the short beams of Reasons Eye, 50
See onely, There thou art, nor How, nor Why.
How is the Loadstone, Natures subtle pride,
By the rude Iron woo'd, and made a Bride?
How was the Weapon wounded? what hid Flame
The strong and conqu'ering Metal overcame?
Love (this Worlds Grace) exalts his Natural state;
He feels thee, Love, and feels no more his Weight.
Ye learned Heads, whom Ivy garlands grace,
Why does that twining plant the Oak embrace?
The Oak for courtship most of all unfit, 60
And rough as are the Winds that fight with it?
How does the absent Pole the Needle move?
How does his Cold and Ice beget hot Love?
Which are the Wings of Lightness to ascend?
Or why does Weight to th' Centre downwards bend?
Thus Creatures void of Life obey thy Laws,
And seldom We, they never know the Cause.

天国の幸せを歌う精霊、
〈声〉と〈詩〉、星に生まれたふたりの姉妹、
聖なる響きを重ね、力をあわせ、
死せるものを貫き、命を与え、
超自然の幻を聴かせて、
純真な調和を、静かな歌を、聴かせて、
サファイア色の玉座の前でいつも
あの方に歌う歌を、
澄みあふれる高音で厳かに祝いつつ－－
燃えて輝く熾天使たちが並び、
空に向かいトランペットを吹き鳴らすなか、
千の智天使たちが
永遠のハープの黄金の弦を弾くなか、
正しい天使たちが勝利の棕櫚を手に、
心からの賛美と礼拝の歌を
永遠に歌うなか－－
そして、わたしたちも地上で、乱れぬ声で、
天の歌に応える、
かつて、罪が
自然の鐘の音を乱しやかましく
壊す前に、この世のすべてのものが
偉大な主に捧げていた歌、神の愛が導くリズムで
完璧に響きあっていた歌、真っ直ぐ立ち、
神に従い善であった頃の歌で－－
そう、あの歌をとり戻し、
天の歌にあわせて歌えたなら－－いつか、
歌い奏でる天使たちとともに、
神と生き、終わりのない朝の光のなか、声をあわせられたなら。

Blest pair of Sirens, pledges of Heav'ns joy,
Sphear-born harmonious Sisters, Voice, and Vers,
Wed your divine sounds, and mixt power employ
Dead things with inbreath'd sense able to pierce,
And to our high-rais'd phantasie present, [ 5 ]
That undisturbed Song of pure concent,
Ay sung before the saphire-colour'd throne
To him that sits theron
With Saintly shout, and solemn Jubily,
Where the bright Seraphim in burning row [ 10 ]
Their loud up-lifted Angel trumpets blow,
And the Cherubick host in thousand quires
Touch their immortal Harps of golden wires,
With those just Spirits that wear victorious Palms,
Hymns devout and holy Psalms [ 15 ]
Singing everlastingly;
That we on Earth with undiscording voice
May rightly answer that melodious noise;
As once we did, till disproportion'd sin
Jarr'd against natures chime, and with harsh din [ 20 ]
Broke the fair musick that all creatures made
To their great Lord, whose love their motion sway'd
In perfect Diapason, whilst they stood
In first obedience, and their state of good.
O may we soon again renew that Song, [ 25 ]
And keep in tune with Heav'n, till God ere long
To his celestial consort us unite,
To live with him, and sing in endles morn of light.
