『人間』

（〈死〉がやってくる）

〈死〉
わたしは〈死〉だ。こわがらなくてもいい。
すべての人間に休息を与え、誰ひとり見逃がさないのだから。
神が命じている、
みな私に従うように、とな。

〈人間〉
〈死〉だって？ まったく予想外のときに来るんだな。
でも、ぼくを助けることもできますよね？
それに、やさしくしてくれるならお礼をします。
そうですね、1000ポンドさしあげましょう。
もし、この件を明日までのばしていただけましたら。

（〈友情〉が裏切る）

〈友情〉
ねえ、〈人間〉さん……
君はどうしてそんなに悲しそうにしてるの？
何か困ったことがあるなら、ね、言ってみてください。
助けてあげたいんです。

君が悲しんでいるとつらいんです。
もし誰かひどいことをする人がいるなら、わたしが復讐してあげます。
君のためなら、わたしは死んだっていいんです。

本当です。君といっしょに地獄に落ちるとしても、
わたしはあなたを途中で見捨てたりしません！

〈人間〉
では、悩みを話します。
旅に出なくてはならないんです。
長くて大変な、危険な旅です。
すぐにきっちり人生の清算をしなくてはならないんです。
神さまの審判を受けるんです。
だから、お願いです。いっしょに来てください。
わたしを見捨てない、って約束してくれましたよね。

〈友情〉
それはひどい話ですね！ 約束を守るのは、確かに大事なことです。
でも、もしそんな旅に出たら、
もちろん、わたしも死ぬことになってしまいますよね……

〈人間〉
ねえ、さっき言ってたじゃないですか。わたしが困ってるなら、
死んでも絶対に見捨てない、
地獄にまでついて来てくれる、って。

〈友情〉
確かに言いました。
でも、そんなおいしい話、忘れてもらっていいですか？

〈知識〉
〈人間〉さん、ぼくがいっしょにいきます。導いてあげます。
いちばん困ったときでもそばにいます。

俺は〈強さ〉だ。困ったときには俺が味方だからな。

世界中のどこへだって
ぼくはついて行くよ。楽しいときも、つらいときも、ね。

あたしだって死ぬまでついて行くわ。
何があってもこわくないわ。

〈人間〉
じゃあ、行こう、みんな。ぐずぐずしてないで出発だ。

〈思慮〉
ぼくは〈思慮〉です。ぼくもおそばにいます。

〈知識〉
どんなに大変な旅でも、
ぼくは君から離れません。

〈人間〉
ああ、ふらふらして、もう立っていられないよ。
足に力が入らない。
みんな、もうこの国をふり返るのはやめよう。
世界中の金なんて、もういらないや。
この穴に入っていかなきゃ。
土にかえって眠るんだ。

〈美しさ〉
え？ このお墓に？ 嘘でしょ！

〈人間〉
嘘じゃないよ。ここで少しずつ朽ちはてていくんだ。

〈美しさ〉
本当に？ ここであたしも死ぬの？

〈人間〉
そうだよ。二度と出てこれないんだ。
もうこの世に生きて帰ったりせずに、
すべてを支配する天の神さまのところに行くんだよ。

〈美しさ〉
やっぱり、あたし、キャンセルするわ。じゃあね。

〈強さ〉
なあ、〈人間〉、俺も、もうついて行けないや。
こんな遊び、おもしろくないし。

〈人間〉
え？ みんなぼくを見捨てるの？
ねえ、〈強さ〉さん、ちょっと待ってよ。

〈強さ〉
ゴメンよ。もう無理だ。
俺はとっとと帰るぜ。
泣いても無駄だからな。

〈人間〉
ずっとそばにいてくれる、って言ったじゃないか。

〈強さ〉
もう、来るんじゃなかったぜ……
ぐだぐだ言って馬鹿じゃねえの？
さっさとそこの墓に入っちまいな。

〈思慮〉
〈人間〉さん、ぼくも〈強さ〉さんについて行きます。
ひとりで行ってください。

〈人間〉
え？ 〈思慮〉さん、ぼくを見捨ててしまうの？

〈思慮〉
そうです。ここでさよならです。
〈強さ〉が去ったら、
ぼくもついていかなくてはならないのです。

〈五感〉
〈人間〉さん、ぼくたちもここで失礼します。
ぼくもみんなについて行きます。さようなら。

（〈善行〉だけが残る）

〈人間〉
神さま以外、何もあてにならないんだな。
〈美しさ〉も、〈強さ〉も、〈思慮〉も、みんなダメだ。
〈死〉が合図のラッパを吹いたら、
みんないちもくさんにぼくから逃げていった。

〈善行〉
いいえ、〈人間〉さん、わたしがそばにいます。
わたしは絶対にあなたを見捨てません。
困ったときには、わたしのことを友だちだと思ってください。

〈人間〉
ありがとう、〈善行〉さん。あなたが本当の友だち、
みんなが見捨てたぼくの最後の友だちだったのですね。
あなたよりも他のみんなを愛していた、そんなぼくの……。
〈知識〉さん、あなたもぼくを見捨てるのですか？

〈知識〉
そうです、〈人間〉さん、あなたが死んでいくときに。
でも、まだ行きません。どんな危険も平気です。

〈人間〉
ありがとう、〈知識〉さん。心からありがとう……
ああ、そろそろ行かなくては、
人生の清算をして、借りたものを返さなくては。
この世でのぼくの時間はもう終わりそうです。
この話を見ている人、聞いている人は、ぼくの例から学んでください。
ぼくが愛してきたものすべてがぼくを見捨てました。
本当にそばにいてくれるのは、〈善行〉だけなのです。

〈善行〉
この世のものに本当の価値はありません。
〈美しさ〉も〈力〉も〈思慮〉も、みな人を見捨てます。
きれいな嘘を言う愚かな友人や家族や親類も、
みんな去っていきます。わたし、〈善行〉だけが頼りなのです。

〈人間〉
偉大なる神さま、ご慈悲をお願いします。
おそばにいてください。それから母なる、聖なるマリアさまも。

Death:
I am Death, that no man dreadeth.
For every man I rest and no man spareth;
For it is God’s commandment
That all to me should be obedient.

Everyman:
O Death, thou comest when I had thee least in mind;
In thy power it lieth me to save,
Yet of my good will I give thee, if ye will be kind,
Yea, a thousand pound shalt thou have,
And defer this matter till another day.

Fellowship:
Everyman, . . .
Sir, why lookest thou so piteously?
If anything be amiss, I pray thee, me say,
That I may help to remedy.

I have pity to see you in any distress;
If any have you wronged ye shall revenged be,
Though I on the ground be slain for thee. . . .
. . . . . . . . . .
For, in faith, and thou go to Hell
I will not forsake thee by the way!

Everyman:
I shall show you how it is;
Commanded I am to go on a journey,
A long way, hard and dangerous,
And give a strait count without delay
Before the high judge Adonai*. *God
Wherefore I pray you bear me company,
As ye have promised, in this journey.

Fellowship:
That is a matter indeed! Promise is duty,
But, and I should take such a voyage on me,
I know it well, it should be to my pain:

Everyman
Why, ye said, If I had need,
Ye would me never forsake, quick nor dead,
Though it were to hell truly.

Fellowship:
So I said, certainly,
But such pleasures be set aside, thee sooth to say. . . .

Knowledge:
Everyman, I will go with thee, and be thy guide,
In thy most need to go by thy side.

Strength:
. . . I, Strength, will by you stand in distress,
Though thou would in battle fight on the ground.

Five-wits:
And though it were through the world round,
We will not depart for sweet nor sour.

Beauty:
No more will I unto death’s hour,
Whatsoever thereof befall.

Everyman:
And now, friends, let us go without longer respite.

Discretion:
I, Discretion, will bide by you also.

Knowledge:
And though this pilgrimage be never so strong,
I will never part you fro:

Everyman:
Alas, I am so faint I may not stand,
My limbs under me do fold;
Friends, let us not turn again to this land,
Not for all the world’s gold,
For into this cave must I creep
And turn to the earth and there to sleep.

Beauty:
What into this grave? Alas!

Everyman:
Yea, there shall you consume more and less.

Beauty:
And what, should I smother here?

Everyman:
Yea, by my faith, and never more appear.
In this world live no more we shall,
But in heaven before the highest Lord of all.

Beauty:
I cross out all this; adieu. . . .

Strength:
Everyman, I will thee also forsake and deny;
Thy game liketh me not at all.

Everyman:
Why, then ye will forsake me all.
Sweet Strength, tarry a little space.

Strength:
Nay, sir, by thy rood of grace
I will hie me from thee fast,
Though thou weep till thy heart brast.

Everyman:
Ye would ever bide by me, ye said.

Strength:
I repent me that I hither came. . . .
Thou art but a fool to complain, . . .
Go thrust thee into the ground.

Discretion:
Everyman, I will after Strength be gone,
As for me I will leave you alone.

Everyman:
Why, Discretion, will ye forsake me?

Discretion:
Yea, in faith, I will go from thee,
For when Strength goeth before
I follow after evermore.

Five-wits:
Everyman, my leave now of thee I take;
I will follow the other, for here I thee forsake.

Everyman:
O all thing faileth, save God alone;
Beauty, Strength, and Discretion;
For when Death bloweth his blast,
They all run from me full fast.

Good-Deeds:
Nay, Everyman, I will bide with thee,
I will not forsake thee indeed;
Thou shalt find me a good friend at need.

Everyman:
Gramercy, Good-Deeds; now may I true friends see;
They have forsaken me every one;
I loved them better than my Good-Deeds alone.
Knowledge, will ye forsake me also?

Knowledge:
Yea, Everyman, when ye to death do go;
But not yet for no manner of danger.

Everyman:
Gramercy, Knowledge, with all me heart. . . .
Methinketh, alas, that I must be gone,
To make my reckoning and my debts pay,
For I see my time is nigh spent away.
Take example, all ye that do hear or see,
How they that I loved best do forsake me,
Except my Good-Deeds that bideth truly.

Good-Deeds:
All earthly things is but vanity:
Beauty, Strength, and Discretion, do man forsake,
Foolish friends and kinsmen, that fair spake,
All fleeth save Good-Deeds, and that am I.

Everyman:
Have mercy on me, God, most mighty;
And stand by me, thou Mother and Maid, holy Mary.
