見えないか、友よ、深い雪が
故郷の森の額を砂糖漬けにしている。
重荷に耐えかねて枝は折れそうだ。
雪に押しつぶされ、涙に凍っている。
川は無口に、ゆっくり流れる。
すべてが氷の上着に閉じこめられている。
だから、会おう。この世界は
今、軌道からまったく逸れてしまっているが、
ぼくたちは、自然のように、同じ音を奏でよう。
先祖たちと同じ道を生きていこう。
どうして見ようとする？
今後起こるかもしれないことを？ 目の前のことでなく？
どうして恐れや希望や不安でわざわざ落ちつきを
失う必要がある？ 星占いでもわからないことについて？
未来を覗こうとする者は、
たいていこの世で生きられるよりもさらに先を知りたがる。
そこに行こうとしても、
墓場で行き止まりなのに。
悲しむ、ため息をつく、思索する、
なんて命の糸の無駄遣い。
むしろ賢く楽しめば、与えられた時間は長くなる。
楽しみのない人生など病気と同じ。
悲しみ、泣いて今を生きるなんて、
涙で敵を養うのと同じ。

And cares beyond our Horoscope?
Who into future times would peere
Looks oft beyond his terme set here,
And cannot goe into those grounds
But through a Church-yard which them bounds;
Sorrows and sighes and searches spend
And draw our bottome to an end,
But discreet Joyes lengthen the lease
Without which life were a disease,
And who this age a Mourner goes,
Doth with his tears but seed his foes.

幸せだった、昔の日々は。ぼくは
こどもで天使のように輝いていた。
まだこの世における
第二の生に慣れていなかった。
ぼくの魂は、神についての白い思いしか
胸に抱いていなかった。
ぼくはまだ、最初に愛したあの方から
一、二マイルほどしか離れていなかった。
だからふり返れば、すぐ後ろに
神の光り輝く顔を見ることができた。
金色の雲、金色の花を
ずっと見つめていられたし、
そんなちょっとした輝きに
永遠の世界の影を見ることができた。
ぼくの口から罪深い言葉が出て
良心が傷くことはなかったし、
黒い魔術によって五感すべてが
それぞれ罪を犯すこともなかった。
この肉体という服のなか感じていた、
永遠の神の世界からの矢に貫かれるのを。

ああ、戻りたい！
昔の道を歩きたい！
あの地に行きたい、
光り輝く方々と別れたあの地に。
そこに行けば魂の目が開き、
棕櫚（しゅろ）の陰ある町エリコが見えるはず。
でも、あああ！ ぼくの魂はひどい拘束に
酔っていて、もうふらふらだ！
前に前に、と行きたがる者もいるが、
ぼくは後ろに進みたい。
そして、このからだの塵が壺に納められるとき、
かつていた気高いところに帰りたい。

Shin'd in my angel-infancy!
Before I understood this place
Appointed for my second race,
Or taught my soul to fancy ought
But a white, celestial thought;
When yet I had not walk'd above
A mile or two from my first love,
And looking back―at that short space―
Could see a glimpse of His bright face;
When on some gilded cloud, or flow'r,
My gazing soul would dwell an hour,
And in those weaker glories spy
Some shadows of eternity ;
Before I taught my tongue to wound
My conscience with a sinful sound,
Or had the black art to dispense
A sev'ral sin to ev'ry sense,
But felt through all this fleshly dress
Bright shoots of everlastingness.

O how I long to travel back,
And tread again that ancient track !
That I might once more reach that plain,
Where first I left my glorious train;
From whence th' enlighten'd spirit sees
That shady City of palm-trees.
But ah! my soul with too much stay
Is drunk, and staggers in the way!
Some men a forward motion love,
But I by backward steps would move ;
And when this dust falls to the urn,
In that state I came, return.

あの真っ白だったいちばん初めの時代は、幸せであった！ あの頃、
わたしたちは、ただ大地の恵みによって生きていた。
口あたりのいい、贅沢な食べもので
人は軟弱になっておらず、
食べものといえばかたい木の実しかなく、
ワインではなく、はちみつを飲んでいた。
こどもたちは、両親があらかじめ蓄えていた
安い木の実の汁を飲んだものだった。
あの頃、きらびやかな服、
つやつやの絹や真っ赤な毛糸でできた服などなかった。
みな、寝床はどこかの花咲く泉のそばにあり、
澄んだ水が飲みものだった。
太陽が照って熱いときには、松の木陰の
涼しいところで休んだものだった。
まだ木々は切り倒されておらず、若く、
輝かしく、立っていたのだ。
あつかましい水夫とその奴隷が、
船で高波を切って進むこともなかった。
よその国のものを望むこともなく、
みな自分の国の海岸から出ることはなかった。
あの頃は、猛々しい戦争の太鼓が恐ろしく響くこともなく、
ラッパが勇ましくキンキンと鳴り狂うこともなかった。
激しい憎しみのために戦い、
光輝く剣が生温かい血にまみれることもなかった。
そもそも、愛に満ちた時代に、敵意に燃えて
武器をとり、たがいを傷つける者などいるはずもないであろう？
みなで定めた正義に誰も逆らうことなく、
血を流してほうびを求める者などいなかった時代に？
ああ、いつの日か、わたしたちの時代もあらたまり、
あの時代の品格に届くといい！
だが、エトナ山から噴きあがる炎より激しく、私欲と
争いでわたしたちの国は燃えている。
ああ、誰なのだ？ 最初に金を
見つけたのは？ わざわざ地中に隠されていたのに？
真珠のために最初に海に飛びこんだのは誰だ？
あの不幸のもとたる貴重品をわざわざ求めるなんて？

No soft luxurious diet then
Had effeminated men,
No other meat, nor wine had any
Than the coarse mast, or simple honey,
And by the parents' care laid up
Cheap berries did the children sup.
No pompous wear was in those days
Of gummy silks, or scarlet baize,
Their beds were on some flow'ry brink,
And clear spring-water was their drink.
The shady pine in the sun's heat
Was their cool and known retreat,
For then 'twas not cut down, but stood
The youth and glory of the wood.
The daring sailor with his slaves
Then had not cut the swelling waves,
Nor for desire of foreign store
Seen any but his native shore.
No stirring drum had scarr'd that age,
Nor the shrill trumpet's active rage,
No wounds by bitter hatred made
With warm blood soil'd the shining blade;
For how could hostile madness arm
An age of love, to public harm?
When common justice none withstood,
Nor sought rewards for spilling blood.
O that at length our age would raise
Into the temper of those days!
But--worse than Aetna's fires!--debate
And avarice inflame our State.
Alas! who was it that first found
Gold, hid of purpose under ground,
That sought our pearls, and div'd to find
Such precious perils for mankind!

だろうが。）
