この恋の歌の最初の6行で、作者は次のようにはじまるロンサールのオードを完全に模倣している。

人を好きにならない人は不幸。
でも、不幸なのは恋する人。
でも、いちばん……

この詩の最後においても、作者はロンサールの他の詩とほぼ同様のことを言っている。ロンサールは愛しい人にこう語る。

プルトにキスしたいの？
死の国で？ カロンが
君を小舟で連れていく前に？

不幸せ、それは恋をしていない人。
不幸せ、それは恋に苦しんでいる人。
でも、いちばん悲しいのはこんな人－－
愛しい相手が傲慢で、冷たくて、
嘲りの帆を堂々と高く張って、そして
思いに応えてくれない、むしろ利用されるだけ、という。
これがぼくの苦境、などと言えば、たぶんみんな、
ぼくの好きな相手はひどいと思うだろう。
こう言うだろう、恋と不幸は仲よしで、
がんばるだけ損をする、報いもなく死ぬだけ、と。
そう、ぼくは永遠にあの人の
奴隷。ぜんぜん優しくないご主人さまの奴隷。
あの人は（ひょっとして）自分は死なない、永遠に若い、と思ってる？
カロンの小舟にのっていったとしても、
かわいい顔でプルトの心を奪えると思ってる？
それは無理。プロセルピナが黙っていない。
プロセルピナは認めない、自分以外の誰かが
プルトに愛されるなどということは。

In the first sixe verses of this Passion, the Author hath imitated perfectly sixe verses in an Ode of Ronsard, which beginneth thus:

Celui qui n'ayme est malheureux,*
Et malheureux est l'amoureux,
Mais la misere, &c?

And in the last staffe of this Passion also he commeth very neere to the sense, which Ronsard vseth in an other place, where he writeth to his Mistresse in this maner:

En veus tu baiser Pluton
La bas,* apres che Caron
T'aura mise en sanacelle?

VNhappy is the wight, thats voide of Loue,
And yet vnhappie he, whom Loue torments,
But greatest griefe that man is forc't to proue,

この恋の歌のなか、ところどころ言葉の言いかた・区切りかたが変わっていることに注意してほしい。森を歩きながら心の思いを打ち明ける作者と、彼に言い返す〈こだま〉の立場の違いがわかるであろう。〈こだま〉は、作者に言い返しているのみではない。むしろ、ナルキッソスへの恋のために日々やつれていく自分のつらい気持ちを語っている。ナルキッソスの冷たさについては、オウィデイウスが詳しく書いている。〈こだま〉の過剰な思いについても、そちらを参照されたい。

わたし：
世界でただひとり、ぼくのこの胸の思いだけが本当の恋。

〈こだま〉：
この胸の思いだけが本当の恋。

わたし：
バカじゃない？ 何言ってるの？
この嘘つき。

It is to be considered in reading this Passion, howe in some answeres, the accent or poynting of the wordes is altered, and therewithall howe the Authour walking in the woods, and bewayling his inward passion of Loue, is contraried by the replies of Echo: whose meaning yet is not so much to gainsay him, as to expresse her owne miserable estate in daily cōsuming away for the loue of her beloued Narcissus; whose vnkindnes Ouid describeth at large, together with the extreme loue of Echo.

今のぼくの気持ちが愛でないなら、愛って何だろう？
今のぼくの気持ちが愛だとしても、愛って何だろう？
愛が幸せなものなら、どうしてみんな傷つくのだろう？
愛が悪いものなら、どうして誰もそれを悪く言わないのだろう？
自分から望んで愛に燃えているなら、どうして悲しいのだろう？
意に反して愛するほど愛が強いなら、悲しんで何が変わるのだろう？

ああ、生きながらの死、甘く、楽しい不幸－－
心が抵抗しても、愛の力にはかなわない。
後ずさりして、気持ちをおさえても、
愛さずにはいられないから、悲しんでもしかたがない。
愛の奴隷になっている人には
このことわざがふさわしいーー「自業自得」。

こうしてあちこちから吹く風に飛ばされて、
ぼくは小さな舟で危険な海を渡っている。
知恵ではなく勘違いという荷物ばかりを積んで、
港から遠くに流されて、ぼくは漂う。
不安の波にゆれ、どんな助けを求めていいかもわからず、
ぼくは夏に凍え、冬の炎に燃える。

ぼくはとても幸せでした。先ほど
あのひとといっしょにいて、五感がみな満たされていたのですから。
心のこもったキスで口が幸せでした。
音楽のような声を聞き、耳が幸せでした。
麝香（じゃこう）のような息の香りで、鼻が幸せでした。
つつしみが許す範囲であのひとにさわって、手が幸せでした。

そして、何がぼくの目を奪ったか、言いましょうか。
それは、タホ川の砂金のような金色のあのひとの巻き毛です。
それから、象牙のように白くなめらかなあのひとの顔です。
そこでは〈自信〉と〈威厳〉と〈はにかみ〉が手をとりあってました。
それから目です。片目は平和を、もう片目は戦争を告げていました。
ウェヌスが片目を、マルスがもう片目を支配していたのです。

それから、ぼくは見ました、あのひとの高い鷲鼻、白みがかった赤い頬、
オリエントの真珠のような歯、美しいほほえみ、
くぼみのあるあご、透きとおった光のような胸、
ティートーノスに心奪われた夜明けの女神のような手・・・・・・
この世でこれほどのよろこびを味わったのは、ぼくだけでしょう、
五感すべてがそれぞれ満たされていたのですから。
