「トロイルスの歌」

これが愛でなければ、神よ、ぼくが感じているのは何？
これが愛なら、それは何？ どんなもの？
もし愛がすばらしいなら、どうして苦しい？
もし愛が悪しきものなら、ふしぎだ、
その痛み、
苦しみが、みな心地いい。
それらは、飲めば、もっとほしくなる。

しかし、みずから進んで恋い焦がれているなら、
どうして悲しく、満たされない？
不幸でうれしいなら、なぜ嘆く？
どうして？ 疲れてもいないのに力が入らない。
ああ、生きながらの死、はじめて感じる幸せな不幸、
どうしてそれがぼくを満たす？
たぶん、そう望んでいるから？

みずから望んでいるなら、不平をいっても
しかたない。こうして、右に左に波にゆれ、
ぼくは、櫂（かい）のない舟にのっているかのよう。
海の上、両側から吹く風に、
いったりきたり、いつまでも揺れている。
ああ、このふしぎな病は何？
冷たさの熱さ、熱の冷たさのために、ぼくは死ぬ。
