狙う獲物を。逃げる獲物を。
飢えた目で獲物を狙うたび、
新しい秘密の傷で心が痛んだ。

獲物を狙って頬が染まる、
死人の白に、赤熱の赤に。

「幸せな人」（Beatus ille: ベアトゥス・イッレ）の
主題を広めた作品のひとつ。翻訳としては
このエポードよりも先に。

死の恐怖のところはルクレティウスとも関連。

16世紀から18世紀まで、この主題を扱う詩が
本当に多い。天国における死後の幸せを生きる
目標とするキリスト教に対し、この世の幸せを
正当化する思想として刺激的・現実的・理知的な
ものとしてとらえられたのだろう。

ラオコオンは、牛をいけにえにして
祭壇に捧げた。すると、突然、
見よ！ テネドスから大きな輪を描きつつ、
静かな海を渡って二匹の大きな毒蛇が泳いできた。
岸に向かいつつ、思い出したくもないが、
海の上、胸から上をもちあげていた。
波の上に見えるのは残忍な顔で、
後ろの部分は、水のなか隠れていた。
身の毛もよだつようなその背中をからみあわせつつ、
砕ける波の音とともに蛇たちは岸にやってきた。
その目は、血と炎の色にギラギラしていた。
出たり入ったりする舌で、シューシューいいながら口をなめていた。
わたしたちは逃げた。顔からは完全に血の気が引いていた。
蛇たちは、まっすぐラオコオンに向かって飛んでいった。
そしてまず、それぞれ彼の小さな
二人の子のからだに巻きついた。
かわいそうに、蛇たちは彼らの手足をかみちぎり、食べてしまった。
そして、次にラオコオンに襲いかかる。こどもたちを助けるために
武器をもっていたが、そんな彼に、蛇たちは二重にからみつく。
からまったロープのように、しっぽ同士をつなげ、彼の腰を絞めつける。
うろこのある背中のところで彼の首を二重に絞めつける。
そしてのどをのばし、頭を高く掲げている。
ラオコオンは、両手でなんとか蛇をふりほどこうとした。
神官をあらわす頭の帯は、ほとばしる血と、
悪臭を放つ毒でベタベタに汚れていた。
空の星に向かい、彼はおぞましい最後の叫び声をあげる。
それは、まるでうなる牛の鳴き声、
いけにえの牛が祭壇であげる断末魔のうなり声のようであった、
首に突き刺さった斧をふり落とそうとしながら・・・・・・。
二匹の蛇は、跡を残しながら、あっという間に
女神アテナの神殿、彼女の高い塔のところに這っていった。
そしてこの厳格なる女神の足下、
彼女の盾の後ろに隠れた。
わたしたちの震える胸は、さらなる驚愕に襲われた。
みなはいった、ラオコオンは、みずからの悪事のために
こんな高い代償を払ったのだ、あの神聖なる木馬に
剣を向け、邪悪にも槍を投げつけたのだから、と。
