バターたっぷりのりんごパイ（笑）、それから
煙草が好きな詩人が、ご主人さまと呼ぶところの
気高く立派な貴婦人に以下のような詩を書いた」

もし、ぼくたちのあいだにダーダネルス海峡くらいのクリームの
海があったら、ミルクのように白いあなた、ぼくはあなたのところまで
泳いで行って、どれだけあなたとクリームを愛しているか証明します。
そうです！ レアンドロスのように岸から岸まで泳ぐのです。
でも、もし途中バターたっぷりのりんごパイが
浮かんでいたら、それをボートにして
あなたのところまで悠々と渡っていけるでしょう。
船酔いするかもしれませんが。
もし、昼か夜に嵐がおきて、砂糖の雪や
姫茴香（ひめういきょう）の雹（ひょう）が降ってきたら、
たぶんパンケーキの船がぼくを
あなたのいる波止場に運んでくれるでしょう。
そこに着いて、もし誰かが煙草をもっていたら、
その煙でぼくは服を乾かしてから眠ります。

Though sea-sick I might be while it did float.
Yet if a storm should rise, by night or day,
Of sugar-snows and hail of caraways,
Then, if I found a pancake in my way,
It like a plank should bring me to your kays;
Which having found, if they tobacco kept,
The smoke should dry me well before I slept.
