鳥は歌った－－「薔薇が静かに咲いています。ほら、はじめは
処女のように恥ずかしがって、ほんの少し外を覗くだけ。
半分咲いて、半分閉じて、花びらをたたんで
葉っぱに隠しています。見えないからますますかわいい。
でもすぐに、もっと大きく大胆に花を広げて見せてくれます。
そして、枯れてやつれて死んでいきます。お終いです、
まったく変わりはてた姿になって。さっきまで
貴婦人のベッド、恋人のお部屋に飾られていたのに。」

「人も同じです、一日が過ぎるあいだに
蕾（つぼみ）も花を枯れていき、
二度と咲きません。草のように
刈られ、枯れ、茶色になっていきます。
だから薔薇の花を摘みなさい、まだ時間があるうちに。
一日は短く、はじまったと思ったらもう終わりです。
愛の薔薇を摘みなさい、できるうち、
愛して愛されて、抱いて抱かれていられるうちに。」

That first scant peeping forth with virgin beams,
Half ope, half shut, her beauties doth upfold
In their dear leaves, and less seen, fairer seems,
And after spreads them forth more broad and bold,
Then languisheth and dies in last extremes,
Nor seems the same, that decked bed and bower
Of many a lady late, and paramour;

"So, in the passing of a day, doth pass
The bud and blossom of the life of man,
Nor e'er doth flourish more, but like the grass
Cut down, becometh withered, pale and wan:
Oh gather then the rose while time thou hast
Short is the day, done when it scant began,
Gather the rose of love, while yet thou mayest,
Loving, be loved; embracing, be embraced."
