いにしえの国を旅してきた人に会った。
彼は言った－－「大きな足だけの石像が
砂漠に立ってて、その近くに
壊れかけた顔の部分が半分埋もれてた。しかめっ面を
してて、くちびるはしわしわで、冷たく、偉そうににやりとしてて・・・・・・
これをつくった人はそのモデルの性格をよく知ってたんだ、
命をもたない石のかたまりからそれが伝わるんだから。
これをつくった人や、そんな心の持ち主が死んだはるか後でも、ね。
石像の台のところにはこう書いてあった－－
吾が名はラムセス二世、王の王なり。
強大なる者、吾なしとげたるもの見よ、して絶望すべし！－－
ほかには何もなかった。この崩れた
巨大な像のまわりには、はてしなく、何もない
砂漠が寂しく広がってた。ずーっと、はるかかなたまで。」

I met a Traveler from an antique land,
Who said, "Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desart. Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read,
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed:
And on the pedestal these words appear:
'My name is OZYMANDIAS, King of Kings.
Look on my works ye Mighty, and despair!'
No thing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that Colossal Wreck, boundless and bare,
The lone and level sands stretch far away."
