はあ……何もかも沈黙している。
空も大地もまったく静かで、
もう獣も空気も鳥も歌っていない。
星たちが夜の戦車に乗せて月を連れてきた。
海は穏やかで、波もだんだん止まっていく。
ぼくだけが違う。愛の神がぼくの心をねじりあげる。
欲望が求めるあんなことやこんなこと、あんな人やこんな人を
無限に目の前にちらつかせる。ぼくは涙を流して歌う、
幸せの歌、悲しみの歌、どっちかわからない歌を。
好きな人のことを考えていると楽しい、気持ちいい。
でもそのうち病気のように
痛くなる。心に棘が刺さる。
悲しみを思い出してしまうから、痛みを
癒してくれるものがないまま生きつづけなければならないから。

In joy and woe, as in a doubtful case.
For my sweet thoughts sometime do pleasure bring;
But by and by, the cause of my disease
Gives me a pang, that inwardly doth sting,
When that I think what grief it is again,
To live and lack the thing should rid my pain.
