シリアック、王座裁判所の首席判事だった君の祖父は、
この国ブリテンの正義の神のようだった。おおいに喝采されていた。
正しく法をおこない、また著書でも正しく法を説いていたから。
法廷で法をねじ曲げる者が本当に多いなかで。

さて、今日は難しいことなどは飲んで流して、ぼくといっしょに
楽しみに溺れよう。もちろん、あとで反省しなくてもいい程度に。
ユークリッドには寝ててもらおう。アルキメデスも今日はお休みだ。
スウェーデンやフランスの思惑とかもしばし忘れよう。

生活をどう律するべきか、君にもそのうちわかってくるだろう。本当の
善に向かうにはどうすればいいか、なども。でも、
神さまはお恵み深いから、それ以外のことをする時間だってちゃんとある。

一見りっぱそうに見えるかもしれないけど、よけいな重荷で
日々いっぱいいっぱいになって生きる、
神さまがくれる楽しいひとときを拒む、というのはまちがいだ。
