自然界に存在する大きなもの、偉大なものほど見ていて
楽しいものはない。大空の半球、星たちの宿る無限の空間の
次にわたしが好きなのは、広い海や地に広がる山々だ。
その厳粛で荘厳な雰囲気は、気高い思想・感情を心に与えてくれる。
そのような時、わたしたちは自然に神のことを、神の偉大さを
考える。わずかながらでも「無限」を感じさせてくれるもの、
無限のように見えるもの、つまりわたしたちの理解力・想像力で
とらえられないほど大きなもの、そのようなものはみな
思考を圧倒し、麻痺させてしまう。それでわたしたちは驚き、
ほめ称えることしかできなくなる。このようなことがとても
心地よいのである。

The greatest objects of Nature are, methinks, the most pleasing to behold; and next to the great Concave of the Heavens, and those boundless Regions where the Stars inhabit, there is nothing that I look upon with more plaesure than the wide Sea and the Mountains of the Earth. There is something august and stately in the Air of these things, that inspires the mind with great thoughts and passions; We do naturally, upon such occasions, think of God and his greatness: and whatsoever hath but the shadow and appearance of INFINITE, as all things have that are too big for our comprehension, they fill and over-bear the mind with their Excess, and cast it into a pleasing kind of stupor and admiration.
