（石の弾丸と雪）

今、石の弾丸が、重い雨のように落ちてくる。
まるで、ゼウスが大砲を調達し、
雲の弾薬庫を開いて弾丸を激しく降らせるときのよう。
冷たく色のない冬が世界を支配し、
洪水のような雪が大地を隠す時のよう。
ゼウスは風を静め、大空を眠らせる。
そして厚く、深く、音もなく、嵐を注ぐ。
まず山の頂点が、次に緑の野原が、
そして砂浜が、白に覆われる。
森の木々は、重みにたわみ、うなづくように頭を下げる。
人がつくったものは、みな一面の輝く荒地の下に埋もれていく。
大地をとり囲む海だけが、降り注いでは溶けていく
羊の毛のような雪をすべて受けいれ、飲みこむ。
まさにそのように、両軍から石の雨が降り注ぎ、
そして、大地に白い廃墟を築いたのであった。

And now the stones descend in heavier showers.
As when high Jove his sharp artillery forms,
And opes his cloudy magazine of storms;
In winter's bleak uncomfortable reign,
A snowy inundation hides the plain;
He stills the winds, and bids the skies to sleep;
Then pours the silent tempest thick and deep;
And first the mountain-tops are cover'd o'er,
Then the green fields, and then the sandy shore;
Bent with the weight, the nodding woods are seen,
And one bright waste hides all the works of men:
The circling seas, alone absorbing all,
Drink the dissolving fleeces as they fall:
So from each side increased the stony rain,
And the white ruin rises o'er the plain.
