かくして、見るも恐ろしい隊列を組み、死をもたらすべく、
密集した軍勢が力強く進む。
殺戮にはやり、突進すること、まさに猛々しい。
先に攻め入ったのはトロイ軍、先頭はヘクトルだ。
その姿、まるで、山の額、切り立つ岩の崖から裂け落ちた
岩が飛ぶかのよう。狂気とも見まごう怒り、
かたい岩壁から奔流を噴き出さんばかりの狂乱に駆られ、
まっさかさまに岩は落ちる。
崖から崖へ、すべてを破壊しつつ岩は跳ね、転がる。
木にぶつかれば、それはみな爆音とともに裂け、折れる。
常に岩は力を増し、その熱さは煙が立ちのぼらんばかり。全力で、すごい勢いで
あちこちに跳ね、飛び、雷のようにすべてをなぎ倒して落ち、野原にたどりついて
止まる。まさにヘクトルはそんな岩、彼ひとりにて軍勢すべてに値する。
彼が荒れ狂う時、それは誰にも止められない。止まったなら、誰にも彼を動かせない。

Thus breathing death, in terrible array,
The close compacted legions urged their way:
Fierce they drove on, impatient to destroy;
Troy charged the first, and Hector first of Troy.
As from some mountain's craggy forehead torn,
A rock's round fragment flies, with fury borne,
(Which from the stubborn stone a torrent rends,)
Precipitate the ponderous mass descends:
From steep to steep the rolling ruin bounds;
At every shock the crackling wood resounds;
Still gathering force, it smokes; and urged amain,
Whirls, leaps, and thunders down, impetuous to the plain:
There stops---so Hector. Their whole force he proved,
Resistless when he raged, and, when he stopp'd, unmoved.
