「メドゥーサの石像」

異形のメドゥーサを
見た人は石になってしまったというが、
これはその彼女の姿を彫った石像ではない。
そう、これはメドゥーサ本人。
ある暑い日、
彼女は水を飲もうと泉にやってきた。
そして水に映る自分の恐ろしい頭を見て、
そのまま麻痺して固まって、この石になってしまった。

OF that Medusa strange,
Who those that did her see in Rocks did change,
No Image carv'd is this;
Medusa's selfe it is:
For while at heate of Day
To quench her Thirst She by this Spring did stay,
Her hideous Head beholding in this Glasse,
Her Senses fail'd, and thus transform'd she was.
