木のように育ち
大きくなれば、よい人になれるわけではない。
樫のように長く三百年立っていればいいわけでもない。
いずれ枯れて葉を失い、倒れて丸太になるだけだから。
一日しか咲かない
五月の百合のほうがずっと美しい、
たとえ咲いた日の夜に折れて死んでも……
その日は光り輝いていたのだから。
小さくても完璧で美しい、そんなものがある。
短くても完璧で美しい、そんな人生もある。

It is not growing like a tree
In bulk, doth make man better be;
Or standing long an oak, three hundred year,
To fall a log at last, dry, bald, and sere:
A lily of a day

In small proportions we just beauties see;
And in short measure life may perfect be.
