なぜ？ なぜ悲しみ、不平をいうのか？ 友よ、
失われた喜びについて？
〈運命〉の女神たちは、何でも与えてくれるわけではないし、
たとえ与えてくれたものでも、みな去っていく。

空に虹、
草には露－－
わたしは考えたりしない、
どうしてそれらはきらめくのか、どうして消えてしまうのか、などと。

わたしなら、腕を組んで立ち止まり、
虹や露を呼び戻そうとしたりはしない。無駄だから。
ここで、あるいはどこか別のところで、
それらはまた輝くのだから。

At pleasures slipp'd away?
Some the stern Fates will never lend,
And all refuse to stay.

I see the rainbow in the sky,
The dew upon the grass,
I see them, and I ask not why
They glimmer or they pass.

With folded arms I linger not
To call them back; 'twere vain;
In this, or in some other spot,
I know they'll shine again.
