心の通いあう支配をつかさどる者、
〈愛〉よ！ ぼくの愛しい人の絵に、
あの愛しい名を称えるためにぼくが描いた絵に、光を。
あの人の完璧な心まで、
あの人の真の美しさまで、目に見えるように。
優しいまなざしが投げかけるあの光だけでなく、
寄せては返すあのほほえみの波だけでなく、
空のような、海のような、あの人の魂まで見る人に伝わるように。

できた！ 完成！ なめらかに長い首、その上の
口を見れば、声が、キスの音が、聞こえる。
伏せられた目は、過去を、未来を、見ている。
この顔はまさに神殿、そしてそこに宿るあの人の魂。
みな知るがいい。これからずっと、（〈愛〉よ、ありがとう！）
ぼくの許可がなければ誰もこの神殿には近づけない。

O Lord of all compassionate control,
O Love! let this my lady's picture glow
Under my hand to praise her name, and show
Even of her inner self the perfect whole:
That he who seeks her beauty's furthest goal,
Beyond the light that the sweet glances throw
And refluent wave of the sweet smile, may know
The very sky and sea-line of her soul.

Lo! it is done. Above the long lithe throat
The mouth's mould testifies of voice and kiss,
The shadowed eyes remember and foresee.
Her face is made her shrine. Let all men note
That in all years (O Love, thy gift is this!)
They that would look on her must come to me.
