町、教会の墓、沈む太陽、
雲、あたりの木、丸い丘、これらすべてが
美しいのに、冷たい－－どこかおかしい－－まるで夢のなか、
むかしの夢、今はじまったばかりの
短命で青白い夏、
凍えて震える冬から逃げてきて、一時間だけぼんやり光る。
あたたかいサファイアの空、でも星ひとつない。
すべてが冷たく、美しい。痛い、いつだって、
ミノス王のように本当の美の姿を
見る者の心は。死んだ色－－
人の病んだ想像力と傲慢で病んだ目が
青白く［投げかける］色－－に染まっていない美の姿を！ バーンズ！
ぼくはいつもあなたを称えてきたけど、今日だけ
許して、あなたの故郷の空を罵るのを。

The clouds, the trees, the rounded hills, all seem
Though beautiful, cold---strange---as in a dream,
I dreamed long ago, now new begun
The short-lived, paly summer is but won
From winter’s ague, for one hour’s gleam;
Through sapphire-warm, their stars do never beam,
All is cold beauty; pain is never done
For who has mind to relish Minos-wise,
The real of beauty, free from that dead hue
Sickly imagination and sick pride
[Cast] wan upon it! Burns! with honour due
I have oft honoured thee. Great shadow, hide
Thy face, I sin against thy native skies.
