WILLMORE
How should I mean? Thou know’st there’s but one way
for a woman to oblige me.

of love like me: I’ll see if they’ll put in for a share;
we cannot lose much by it, and what we have no use for,
we’ll sell upon the Friday’s mart. . . .

これは、王政復古期に大ヒットした喜劇。
主人公の悪い男ウィルモアが大人気を集めた。

王政復古期とは、サブカルチャーであるべき
ものがハイカルチャーとなっていた、まれな時代。
この手の喜劇では、そんなこと言っていいの？
と思うようなセリフが軽やかにポンポン飛び交う。

歴史的には、恋愛・結婚における不道徳を
ひけらかす風潮は、内乱・共和国期（いわゆる
清教徒革命期）の極端な宗教性に対する反動。

より長い目で見るなら、17世紀の思潮における

ピューリタニズム （千年王国思想） x カルペ・ディエム
急進的プロテスタント思想 x ギリシャ・ローマ古典

という対立における右側の項の延長、それが悪のりして
あらわれたもの。
