「虎」

虎、虎、燃えて輝く、
森の闇のなか。
どんな手や目をもつ神が、
恐ろしく、美しい、おまえのからだをつくった？

遠くの深淵、あるいは空－－
おまえの目の炎は、どこからとってきた？
どんな翼で、そこまで飛んだ？
どんな手で、おまえの目の炎をつかんだ？

どんな腕、どんな技で、
おまえの心臓の筋をよじりあわせた？
おまえの心臓は脈打ちはじめ、
そして、恐ろしい手が・・・・・・恐ろしい足が・・・・・・。

どんなハンマーで？ どんな鎖で？
どんなかまどでおまえの脳を焼いた？
どんな鉄床（かなとこ）で？ どんな恐ろしい矢床（やっとこ）で、
死ぬほど恐ろしいおまえの脳をつかんでおさえた？

星たちは稲妻の槍を投げつけ、
涙の雨で空を濡らした－－あのとき、
〈神〉は自分の作品を前にほほえんだか？
子羊をつくったあの〈神〉が、おまえ、虎をつくったのか？

虎、虎、燃えて輝く、
森の闇のなか。
どんな手や目をもつ神が、

What dread hand and what dread feet?

What the hammer? what the chain?
In what furnace was thy brain?
What the anvil? what dread grasp
Dare its deadly terrors clasp?

When the stars threw down their spears,
And watered heaven with their tears,
Did He smile His work to see?
Did He who made the lamb make thee?

Tiger, tiger, burning bright
