バークレーの“良心”の象徴として、半世紀以上にわたって学生たちや町の人々に愛され続けてきた本屋さん"Cody's" が、ついに最期のときを迎えた、とDedeから悲しいメールがきた。

Euclidの一号店
1956年7月9日。UCバークレーのキャンパス近く、Euclid通りにフレッド&パット・コーディ夫妻が小さな本屋さんを開く。これがCody'sの誕生だった。
当時は、今と違って独立系の本屋さんが市場の40~50%を占めていた。Cody'sもアメリカ激動の時代の波に乗り、学生街のど真ん中テレグラフ通りに顔ともいえる店舗をオープン、1977年7月9日にはアンディー・ロスがCody'sを買収して2代目のオーナーとなり、ますます商売は繁盛していった。
しかし、その後独立系の本屋は大型チェーン店との競争に敗れ、次々と撤退していく。インターネットの普及も、本屋に訪れる人の足を遠ざけていった。
2006年、日本で最大の洋書取り扱い書店である「洋版」が、経営の悪化したCody'sを買収。残ったサンフランシスコ、バークレー(4th Street)の2店舗に最後の望みをかけたが、商況は依然厳しく、2007年4月にはサンフランシスコ店閉店、最後に残った4th Street店も3倍に跳ね上がった家賃に悲鳴を上げて2008年4月にシャタク通りに移転、これが最後の店舗となった。
そしてこの、6月20日。バークレーにその名を刻んだCody's Booksは、ついに姿を消した。
"a heartbreaking moment(断腸の思い)" だが、"unfortunately, my current business is not strong enough or rich enough to support Cody's.(Cody'sを維持し続ける資金力ももはやなかった)"( 最後のオーナーとなった洋版社長のカガワヒロシ氏)。
"Cody's is my treasure and more than that, Cody's is a real friend of (the) Berkeley community and will be missed"(Cody'sは私の宝だったし、それ以上にバークレーの人たちの心の真の友だった。寂しくなるでしょう)(カガワ氏)

July 10, 2006: The flagship store on Telegraph Avenue closes.
September 2006: Andy Ross sells Cody's to a Japanese firm.
April 2007: The San Francisco branch closes.
March 2008: Berkeley's Fourth Street branch closes.
April 1, 2008: Cody's opens its only remaining store, on Shattuck Avenue in
Berkeley.
June 20, 2008: Cody's Books closes.

かといって大型チェーン書店の独り勝ちかといえばそうでもなく。
アマゾンの売上は、すでに紀伊國屋全店合計の売上を超えています。
僕はせめて、毎週の週刊プロレスをコンビニやキヨスクではなく、駅前の本屋さんで買うことでささやかな抵抗をしています。
私は本屋に行くと、みんな(本)から読めと迫られているようで、時々息苦しくなるんですよね(言い訳)。
でも、たまに大きな本屋さんに行って、ゆっくり座って時間を忘れて読むのも好きです。腰が重いだけなのかな・・。
記事の最後に、Cody'sが今後再生するとすれば、超お金持ちが自費で買収することだと書かれてありました。そうやって立ち直った本屋さんもあるそうです。バークレー出身の人たち(おい、ビル・ゲイツ!)立ち上がらないかな。
