Hi Yukari,

I'm not really anti-vaccine, but the HPV vaccine IS controversial in the US.  Part of the reason is that that HPV is ONLY spread by sexual activity. The US is generally not very analytical when it comes to anything related to sexual activity.  It is partly cultural and partly religious.

For me personally, if I had a girl I would have her vaccinated.   However, in the US this vaccine is also recommended for boys.  The primary reason for this is to help what is called "herd immunity" - so that men don't pass the virus to women.  There is minimal benefit to boys (some very, very rare penile cancers), but risks that outweigh the benefits.  On this basis we chose not to vaccinate my son for this virus. In this case I think it is wrong to use the vaccine on boys.

For you second question - that's really interesting.  It took me a few times reading your article to realize that her pen name changes to the kanji!   村中璃子 penname from real name of 中村理子.  The WSJ generally does not allow people to write under a penname, but if it does so it will tell the reader at the bottom of the article.  They may not understand that this was the case here.

Do you have an generally accepted source that links explains this isn't a real name? I'll put it in the comments along with a question about the WSJ's policy on use of a pen name.

Regards,
