13世紀のイタリアに、フェデリコ2世（「シチリアのフリードリッヒ2世」とも日本語表記されます。）という王様がいました。
12世紀終わりに生まれたこの方、他宗教にも寛容であり、教皇からの度重なるエルサレム奪回のための十字軍遠征要請を無視して波紋されたものの、スルタン・アル・カーミルと仲良くなって、闘うことなく、エルサレムをイスラム教徒とキリスト教徒で共存できる街にしようとしたり。

アル・カーミルもまた、知性と教養を備えた方だったことも幸運でしたが、今から８００年前のこの指導者と、現在の指導者、取り替えてほしいものです。
（ただし、フェデリコ２世は必ずしも「平和主義・温和」というわけではなく、残虐な面もあったそうです。これは真似られては困ります。彼の、合理的で、「知・教養」を重んじた部分をまねしてほしいです。）
私が彼のことを知ったのは、９１１の後でした。当時のブッシュ大統領が「十字軍」という言葉を使ったこともあったのでしょうか、当時は、「フリードリッヒ２世が欧州で注目を浴びている」ということを聞きました。
さて、年末に、海外の友人達と、人種・民族差別、国同士の諍いの話をしていたとき、スペインの友人がこう書いてきてくれたメールの抜粋、原文のままですが、貼り付けさせてもらいます。

I hope not to forget it. For me this is the exact point of view now, in our 21st century: Like the astronauts xD
Now, please let me tell you all my personal experience:
Four years ago I had the enormous chance of going to Atapuerca, a prehistoric site in Spain http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/989/ The archeologists had just found a 800.000 years ago hominid jaw and I went with other colleagues to study these hominid and other human maxillas and teeth. As you now I am a very simple dentist but I had this big honor.
This experience changed absolutely my mind: many many tens of thousands of years ago, we were not from any particular country, we had not a particular culture, actually there were very very few small groups of human people dispersed in our Earth, but we already ate, dressed, dreamed, laughed, talked, explored, heard the nature sounds, the voice of the other humans, we invented beautiful things (these now called Art), worked for a better life for us and our community, we took care of the weakest ones, we prayed, buried our beloved, we loved by sure!
We were already developing a biography, a history, although very very short. We were already a "who", not a "what".
In Atapuerca I experienced a kind of human "essence", that's why I cannot feel myself a foreigner in any place. Of course I love a lot my country,but only because I know it much more than the others and I am more used to it, that's probably all.
これは、国境や民族の話でしたが、地球は一つ、そして結局どの人種も、どの国に住んでいる人も、宗教が違う人も、大元は同じ。人の命も尊厳も同じはず。
殺し合ってしか生きられない野生の肉食動物と違って、人間は知性があります。違いで争うことより、相手を尊重し（知り）、争いを起こさない方法をとる人が、より文明的でしょう。
