僕のアパートのすぐ裏、つまりプールの向こうはグッド・ウッド・パークという名の公園です。公園と言っても噴水や遊具やがあるBBQコンロがあるのではなく、全く自然の森。周囲の湿地はマングローブの森ですが、ここは丘の乾燥地なのでユーカリの大木に熱帯の蔦がからみ、椰子や棕櫚の木が混在します。色々の種類の鳥が棲んでいるので、1日中鳥の鳴き声が聞こえてきます。

The backhard of our apartment, or behind the swimming pool is the park called Good Wood Park. The park doesn't have any fountains, play grounds, nor BBQ stoves but the natural forest. It is surrounded by the mangrove swampland but the forest itself is on the dry ground with the huge reedy eucalyptuses and palm trees grow close together. As various types of birds live here, we can listen the voice of them all days.

OZは街造りや家造りや庭造りに優れた美的感覚を持っています。僕のアパートの庭はケアンズの庭園コンクールに入賞したハイセンスな秀作。プールやテニスコートが周囲の森とうまく調和。園路、庭木、下草、芝生、花壇、庭園灯の配列も垢抜けています。前庭は敷石と玉砂利と巨大な13個の陶製の球体と5個の壷。渋いけど明るい庭です。

OZ have special sence of beauty in housing and gardening. The garden of our apartment is an superior work that won the prize in the gardening competition in Cairs. Its swimming pool and the tennis court are in good harmony with the forest aroud them. The arrnagement of the garden, the tree, the grass, the lawn, the grass, the flowebed, and the garden light is modern. The front yard is formed by the paving stone, the gravel, the enormous 13 clay spheres, and 5 pots. The garden is quiet but even bright.

12月14日(木)快晴

僕の住むアパートではペットの飼育は禁止。だけどゲッコウ(ヤモリ)が住み着いています。夜間アパートの外壁の電灯付近には緑色のヤモリが数匹集まっています。昨夜寝室の天井にも1匹見つけました。周囲が森なので藪蚊も沢山います。蚊が媒介するマラリアやデング熱が流行したこともあったそうです。ヤモリはハエや蚊を食べるいい奴です。いわば動く蚊取り線香みたいなものです。月光のヤモリなんてロマンチックじゃないですか？

Keeping pets is prohibited in our apartment but gekkoes had been living here before we moved. Every night sevral green gekkos get together near the electric light of the external wall of our apartment. Last night 1 found one on the ceiling in our bedroom. Since our apartment is surrounded by the forest there are so many mosquitos too. I heard once there was an epidemic of malaria and dengue fever mediated by mosquitoes. Gekkoes are the good ones that eat flies and mosquitoes. In a manner of speaking we can call them "the walking mosquito coil" . Doesn't "Gekko in the moonlight" sound so romantic?

ジョギング記念日

12月13日（水）快晴

4ヶ月間の航海中まったく運動をしなかったので体重が8kgも増えました。引越し以来20日間、朝夕合計12kmのビーチの散歩と1000m遊泳。体重は順調に減りつつありますが、ウエストはなかなか減りません。そこで昨夜はビーチを走ってみました。妻の死以来15年ぶりのジョギングですが、難なく6kmを走破。1960年から1991年まで31年間、毎日欠かさず反戦マラソンをしていました。「1－2,1－2」の代わりに「安保ー粉砕」の掛け声で走ります。♪その腹が凹むといいねと君が言ったから12月12日（イチニー、イチニー）はジョギング記念日。

jogging commemoration day.

As I had no exercise at all on Peace Boat for 4 months I gained 8kg. For 20 days since moving here I have been walking 12 km on the beach and swimming 1000km every day.
My weight is decreasing favorably, but the my waist does not decrease easily.
Last night I went running on the beach then. I did it for the first time after 15 years since my wife died, but I could make it easily the whole distance 6km. I used to run anti-war marathon every morninng for 31 years from 1960 to 1991. I used to make the rhythm "anti war, ant war" instead of "one two, one two" ♪ As you say my stomach should be flat, December 12th (one two, one two) is the jogging commemoration day.

ケアンズの湿地帯はほとんどサトウキビ畑として利用されています。その昔サトウキビ（シュガー・ケーン）の害虫の甲虫類を撲滅するために、南米産のガマガエル（トード）を移入。生命力旺盛なガマは甲虫だけではなく、何でも食べるので在来種の昆虫・爬虫類・両生類が絶滅の危機にさらされています。このガマは体のイボイボから毒を出すので蛇も肉食獣も猛禽類も手出しはできません。夜になると電燈の周囲に沢山のガマが集まって来ます。隣家のフィルは「ガマはハエや蚊も食べるいい奴だ」と言いますが・・・。

Cane toad

The most swamp land in Cairns is utilized as sugarcane fields. In old days in order to eradicate beetles that eat sugar canes a kind of toad was brought from South America. The toad eats not only the beetles but almost everything, so indigenous insects, reptiles and amphibias are exposed to the crisis of extermination. As the cane toads soak poison from wart of its body, snakes, mammals and the predatory birds can not defeat them. In night they get together around the electric light. Phill, next neighbour says “they are the good ones because they eat flies and mosquitoes ” but….

クラゲ除けのネット

12月11日(月)快晴

豪州の北東海岸では12月から5月まで毒クラゲが大量発生し、死者も出ます。この時期に海で泳ぐためには全身を覆うクラゲ除けのスーツを着用するか、クラゲ除けのネットの中で泳ぐのが賢明です。ところでピースボートに乗船中に、豪州随一のセレブのクロコダイル・ハンターが非業の死を遂げました。彼はワニに襲われたのではなく、エイの毒針にやられたのだそうです。

The poisonous jellyfish breaks out a lot in north-east cost of Australia from December to May. Sometimes they kill swimmers. In order to swim safely you should put on jellyfish proof swim suit that covers the entire body, or to swim in a stinger-resistance-net.By the way while I was embarking Peace Boat the crocodile hunter who was the most famous Australian has past away. He was not attacked by a crocodile but got stubbed by the poisonous needle of a stingray.

僕の住むヨーキーズ・ノブ(ヨークの丘)は、ムーン・リバー(月の川)とヨーキーズ分流に囲まれて、周囲は湿地帯。湿地帯はマングローブの森です。大雨が続くとヨークの丘は洪水で孤立するらしいのです。湿地帯には気性の荒いイリエワニが生息しているので、地元の人は犬を連れてビーチを散歩をするそうです。ワニが犬を食べている間に逃げるための用心だそうですが、順序が逆だったら厭ですね。

Yorkeys branch

As Yorkeys Knob where I live is surrounded by the Moon River and Yorkeys branch, the
area around is a swamp land. The swamp land is the forest of mangrove. When the heavy rain continues, the hill of Yorkeys Knob seems to be solitate by the flood. Because savage saltwater crocodiles inhabit in the swamp land, local people walk along the shore accompanying the dog. They say while the crocodile is eating the dog they can escape. But if the order is the other way around, what would you do?

ボラはなぜ跳ぶ？

砂金浜の南東のはずれはバロン川支流のヨーキーズ分流。大雨のたびに上流から落ち葉や泥を運ぶので、砂金浜は鳴き砂ではありません。その代わり魚影が驚くほど豊富。波打ち際から20m先に鳥山が立ち、河口ではたくさんのボラが跳んでいます。よく見るとボラの前を無数の小魚が水面を跳びながら逃げ回っています。ボラの跳躍って捕食活動だったんですね。

Why mullets jump?

The end of south east of Golden Sand Beach is Yorkeys branch of Barron River. Every time when there is the heavy rain the river carries fallen leaves and the mud from the mountain, so Golden Sand Beach is not a weeping beach. On the other hand there are a lot of fish. You can see the gulls flying in flocks 20m beyond the beach and many mullets are jumping and dancing. Seeing carefully, countless tiddlers are also jumping to escape from the mullet. Jumping and dancing of mullet is the predation activity.

居間から徒歩1分で波打ち際。ゴールデン・サンド・ビーチでは180度の珊瑚海が望めます。振り返ると180度の林。北西の丘の上に数軒の家が見えます。眺めはいいのでしょうがビーチに降りるのが大変そう。多分老人向けのアパートなのでしょう。ケアンズは現在雨季。ほとんど毎日、夜間雨が降って朝には止みます。朝日が昇ると砂金浜に虹が懸かります。

Rainbow on the Golden Sand Beach

It takes only 1 minute from our living room to the beach. We can see 180 degrees wide coral sea from the Golden Sand Beach. If I turn around there is the wood in the whole view.There are several houses on the top of the north-eastern hill. Although the view is good, it looks hard to get down to the beach. It probably is the apartment for the elder people. It’s the rainy season at the moment in Cairns. Almost everyday, it’s rainy in nighttime but it stops in the morning. When the sun rises, the rainbow appears over the Golden Sand Beach.

南国の楽園生活にも問題がないわけではありません。１つはアパートが1階なので安全とは言えません。「この辺に泥棒はいないよ」と不動産屋のラードは断言しますが、ユミは不安そう。もう1つは空港が近いのでジェット機の騒音。夜明けの砂金浜を散歩していると、ハーフ・ムーン・ベイに満月が見えます。そして5：30am、ジャンボ・ジェットが着陸態勢の低空飛行で通り過ぎていきました。ジェット騒音は潮騒に消されて聞こえません。

Full moon on the halh moon bay

The paradise life in the tropical land is not perfect without any problems.One of the problem is that since our unit is on the ground floor, it’s not always safe. “There ‘s no thief around here”, the realestate agent Rard says, however Yumi is anxious about insecurity. Another one is noise of the jet aircraft because the airport is close.When I walk the Golden Sand Beach at dawn, I can see the full moon on the Half Moon Bay. And at 5: 30am the jumbo jet flew over with low altitude for landing. Jet noise was not audible being turned off by the sound of waves.

ハーフ・ムーン・ベイ・ゴルフ・クラブ

12月6日(水)快晴

僕のアパートから300m西に半月湾ゴルフ場があります。隣家のフィルは週3日通っているそうです。年会費6万円、プレー代は9ホール90円、18ホール180円ですから毎日通ってもいいのですが、日通に預託した荷物が届かないとテニスもゴルフもダイビングもできません。シドニーと違ってケアンズは雨が多いので芝生の状態も上々のようです。

Half Moon Bay Golf Club

Half Moon Bay Golf Club locates 300m west our apartment. Phill, one of our neighbors goes there 3 days a week. Yearly membership fee is 60,000 Yen, green fee is 90 Yen for 9 holes and 180 Yen for 18 holes, so I want to play everyday. Unfortunately, I can’t enjoy tennis, golf nor diving until I receive the baggage I deposited to Nittsu. Cairns has a lot more rain than in Sydney, so the lawn condition seems to be very good!

ケアンズの南外れにあるビッグ・シング。高さ10ｍ、重さ4トンのショッピングセンターの看板。マグロ、ブリ、サメ、イシナギ、シイラなど大物釣りはかなり凝りましたが、カジキマグロは一度も釣り上げたことはありません。

僕の住む街・ヨーキーズ・ノブ（ヨークの丘）は人口が1500人。北西のムーン・リバー(月の川)と南東のバロン・リバー(男爵川)にはさまれ、ゴールデン・サンド・ビーチ(砂金浜)が北東を向いています。月の川の河口のハーフ・ムーン・ベイ(半月湾)にはマリーナがあり、付属のレストランはTVの観光案内にもしばしば登場します。家から車で3分で行けるので、気が向いたら大物釣りに挑戦しようと思います。

Boat Club

The population of Yorkeys Knob where I live is 1,500. My town located between the Moon River in northwest and the Baron River in southeast. There is Golden Sand Beach pointing northeast.The Boat Club is in the half moon, the estuary of the river of the Half Moon Bay. The restaurant beside often appears even in the sight-seeing guide TV programme.We can get there in 5 minutes by car, so I will challenge going great fishing some day.

家から徒歩1分の砂金浜には豪州ハマグリのピピがいて、アボリジニが食用にしています。ピピを採るのに熊手は要りません。大波が押し寄せると無数のピピが波打ち際に洗い出され、慌てて砂に潜り込もうともがきます。動きの素早い奴です。次の波が来るまでの短時間の勝負。見よう見まねで上手に採るのでアボリジニからほめられました。砂を抜いて味噌汁やラーメンやスパゲティの具に利用しています。

Pipi

There are a lot of Australian clam called pipi on The Golden Sand Beach that is 1 minute walk from my house. Aboriginal people often eat them. You don’t need a rake to catch them. After the big wave rolls the countless number of pipis are pushed onto the beach and they struggle trying to hide into the sand. They are quick fellows! The chance is quite limited, you have to catch them before the next wave comes. I mimicked Aboriginines and they praised me becoming a skillful catcher. After removing sand from them I cook pipis and make miso soup, Chinese noodles, and spaghetti.

引越しから1週間が過ぎました。田舎暮らしは早寝早起きが原則。午前5時起床、砂浜を往復6km、1時間の散歩。朝食の後プールで1時間泳ぎ、夕方も1時間ビーチを歩きます。昨夜は隣家のフィルの夕食に招待されました。63歳で1人暮らしの投資コンサルタントです。彼も朝夕ビーチを散歩します。ここのビーチは黄金色の砂浜で、朝日に所々輝くので、砂金が混じっているのかも。ケアンズもゴールド・ラッシュでできた街です。

Golden Sand Beach

1 week passed since our moving. As for countryside living, going to bed early and getting up early is principle. I get up at 5 am and stroll along the sandy beach for 6 km in 1 hour. After breakfast I swim in the swimming pool for 1 hour and also another hour beach walking in the evening. We are invited to the dinner by Phill, our nextdoor neighbour yesterday. He is a 63-year-old single investment consultant and he enjoys beach walking every morning and evening. The colour of the beach is gold and here and there it shines in the rising sun, I think the alluvial gold might be blended. Cairns was originally founded in gold rush period.
