医師不足のケアンズ

ケアンズは慢性的な医師不足。医師が田舎町に赴任したがらないこともありますが、ご近所の看護婦のマーサの話では、医師の報酬が安いからだそうです。月給が60万円前後。これは鉱山労働者や建築労働者の半額。僕は十和田の20年間の開業医生活で1度も黒字にならなかったので不思議には思いませんけど。

Cairns has the chronic problem of d shortage of the doctors. One reason is that many doctors are not willing to work in the countryside. According to one of my neighbors, nurse Marther, bigger reason is that a doctor’s salary is pretty low, about $6000 per month. This is half of a miner’s or a building constructor’s. No wonder about that, because the business of my own medial practice in Towada, Japan never went into black for the last 20 years.

患側の右足は痛くも痒くもありませんが、退院後5日間は外出はしないで、できるだけ安静にしています。本とパソコンがあれば退屈はしません。主治医の話では6週間ギプスを装着するとのことですが、リハビリに差し支えるので早期に可動式の装具に変更してもらうつもりです。

Although I feel neither painful nor itchy on my wounded right leg, I decided to stay home and rest as much as I could. I would never get bored if I had some books and my PC. My doctor told me to keep my right leg being in plaster for 6 weeks but I’ll ask him to change it to the mobile outfit so that I can start rehabilitation as early as possible.

日本は障害者が暮らせる環境ではありません。旅行者がスーツケースを持って移動することさえ困難な福祉後進国。2月8日の日本行きは延期にしました。僕の家はバリア・フリーですが、入浴が最大の問題。右脚をビニール袋で包んで、シャワー室に折りたたみ椅子を置いてユミが洗ってくれるので結構楽しい。ジャグジーの方がもっと快適かな？

Japanese social environment of the infrastructure is not arranged for disabilities to live there. Japan is an underdeveloped country as for the welfare system. Even healthy tourists have troubles traveling with their suitcases. I gave up going* to Japan on this coming Feburary 8. Although my home is barrier-free, bathing is the biggest problem for me. Wrap my right leg with a plastic bag, place the folding chair in the shower room, and Yumi washes my body. That’s a pretty great fun. Could Jacuzzi bath be more comfortable?

前日にメニューが配られて、好きな食事を選択できます。定食ではなくて、コースごとの選択です。飲み物、パン、サラダ、オントレ、メイン、デザートの各コースにそれぞれ5－10種類の選択肢があります。朝食しか食べなかったけど、味は機内食より少し上。夕食の飲み物では赤ワインか白ワインも選べます。

The menu is handed out to each patient one day before and you can select any food from it. It’s not the set menu but the course. You have 5-10 alternatives of drink, bread, entree, main dish and dessert. I had only breakfast and I thought it tasted better than the in-flight meal. You can even choose red or white wine at dinner.

入院室は4人部屋でしたが、同室の入院患者がいなかったので個室同然。ベッドは電動で姿勢を変えられるので快適です。入院室はかなり広く、窓側にはテーブルと椅子。廊下側にはシャワー室とトイレ。院内で携帯は使用禁止ですが、各ベッドに電話とテレビがあります。

Sickroom in Australia

Although my sickroom was for 4 patients, it was like a private room because there were no other patients in there. The bed was very comfortable being able to change my position electrically. The room was large enough, having table and chairs on window side and the shower room and the toilet in corridor side. Using mobile phone is prohibited in the hospital and there are fixed phone and the TV for each bed.

1晩入院してアキレス腱を縫合して、ギプスと松葉杖姿で今日家に戻りました。豪州では「一般医→専門医→病院」の手順が必要で、その上血液検査もレントゲンも別の組織で、すべてが予約待ち。かなりの重病でも命に別状がなければ、1ヶ月くらい待たされるのが普通。アパートの住人たちは10日目の手術にびっくりしています。日本人なら1晩だけの入院に驚くかも知れませんが・・・。

Crutches

Being hospitalized for a night having the operation of my Achilles tendon stitched together, I came home with plaster cast and crutches. In Australia there’s an order you need to follow, “general doctor – the medical specialist – and the hospital” ,moreover, the blood inspection and the x-rays are also in other organizations. You have to wait for your reservations. When you have a pretty serious illness but not fatal you usually wait for about a month. The residents of my apartment are surprised to know that I had my operation on the 10th day from the accident. If this is in Japan, people might be surprised to know that I spent just 1 night at the hospital.

豪州ではキャピタル・ゲインは非課税なので、家を購入する時には必ず将来の値上がりを見込んで品定めをします。このような投資術は義務教育で教えられます。僕の基本方針は「その地区の最良のロケーションの最上階」。ケアンズに何年間住むかは分かりませんが、海抜20ｍの海に溶けるプールで毎日泳げたら、値上がりしなくても構いません。今日は11時入院、1時から手術の予定です。

Swimming pool dissolved to the sea

As in Australia capital gain is tax-free, when purchasing a house, people estimate increasing value in the future. Such economy is taught during the compulsory education. My basic policy is “the top floor in the best location of the region”. I’m not sure how long we will live in Cairns but if I can swim in the pool that dissolves in the sea of its elevation of 20m, I wouldn’t mind the price will increase or not.

そのリゾート・アパートの名前はビュー。現在建設中で完成予定は10月。僕たちのユニットは最上階の４ＬＤＫ。居住スペースが179平米、テラスが33平米。他にカー・スペースが2台分と倉庫で、＄1,225,000。明日はいよいよ入院をしてアキレス腱の手術です。1泊の入院で約＄1,200。

The name of this resort apartment is VUE. Presently it’s under the construction and it will be completed in October. Our target unit is a 4LDK on the top floor. The Residential space has 179 ㎡ and the terrace 33 ㎡with 2 car spaces and the warehouse. The total price is $1,225,000. I’m going to be in a hospital to have an operation on my Achilles tendon tomorrow. It costs $1,200 for one night staying at the hospital.

豪州ではどこのビーチでもエスプラネードの海側は建物は禁止。椰子の木より高い建物も禁止。だから海の見えるユニットは滅多にありません。ところが、トリニティー・ビーチの新築物件にオーシャン・ビューを発見。丘の上の4階建てで、ビーチまで1分。ここなら将来の値上がりも期待できそうです。

Anywhere in Australia it is prohibited to build houses on the beach side of the esplanade. Any higher building than the palm trees are also prohibited. You can rarely find the ocean-view units, however, we found one in the newly built property on Trinity Beach. It is built on the hill with 4 stories and it takes only 1 minute to the beach. We can expect the higher price in the future with this property.

今日はアキレス腱の超音波検査。明日は整形受診。1人で外出はできませんがユミは運転の名手。ついでにあちこちの不動産めぐり。現在の借家は4月が期限。6ケ月毎の引越しも大変なので販売中の新築物件を見て回ります。市民権がないと中古物件は買えないからです。ビーチかゴルフ場に隣接するユニットが狙い目。脚が不自由なのでカートでゴルフ場を移動中にカンガルーに遭遇。

I had the ultrasonic inspection of my achilles tendon today. I’m going to see the orthopedics doctor tomorrow. I cannot go out alone but Yumi is an expert at driving. She took me round to see some real estates here and there. The contract of our present rental unit will expire this coming April. As it’s hard to move every 6 months, we are checking some properties being built. Without your citizenship you cannot buy the second handed properties. The units that adjoins the beach or the golf course are our target. While driving in a golf-course by the gas-cart we encountered some wild kangaroos.

アキレス腱を切ったのが1月15日。翌16日に一般医を受診し、整形外科への紹介状を書いてもらいましたが、整形は1週間の順番待ち。命にかかわる病気ではありませんが、不自由な腫れた脚はやはり不便です。テニスコート脇の椰子の木のアキレス腱には各種オモトも着生しています。

It was January 15th when I got my Achilles tendon fractured. On the next day I saw the general doctor to have him write a letter of introduction to the orthopedics. I had to wait for his appointment for a week. Although it’s not a fatal sickness, it’s too inconvenient to live with my lame foot swollen. Oyster plant lives adhering to the Achilles tendon of the palm tree on the side of the tennis court.

ヘブライ女性のヨケベットは生まれたばかりの我が子を密かに葦で編んだ小さなゆりかごの中に隠し、ナイル河に流しました（ 十戒）紫オモトは花の形から「モーゼのゆりかご」とも呼ばれます。熱帯雨林に囲まれたケアンズでは、紫オモトも他の木に着生します。

Hebrew woman, Jokebette hided her new-born-baby in a small cradle knit with reed and floated it down the Nile (the Ten Commandments). A oyster plant is also called “Moses in the cradle” as the shape of the flower looks like to the cradle. In Cairns where the land is surrounded by the tropical rain forest the oyster plant grows attaching to other trees.

高床式のアリの巣

多くのアリは土の中に巣を作りますが、ツムギアリは高い木の上に作ります。巣作りの様子はまさに離れ業。何匹ものアリが互いの体を支えあって長いチェーンを作り、離れた葉を引き寄せて貝殻のように閉じ、それをツムギアリの幼虫が吐く繭作りのための糸でつなぎ合わせます。巣を作り始めて約１時間で、浮かぶ要塞のような巣の出来上がりです。アボリジニだけではなく、多くの熱帯地方でツムギアリは食用にされています。

Most ants make their nests under the earth, but spin ant makes them on the high trees. Their nest-making is acrobatic. At first, countless number of ants make the long chain supporting their bodies each other. After that they pull the leaves to bind them together like the seashells. And then they tie them up with the threads that are excreated by their larvae for making cocoons. In about an hour the nest looks like an floating fortress gets completed. Spin ants are eaten by not only Aborigines but also in many tropical regions in the world.

僕のアパートの裏庭のグッド・ウッド・パークには色々の植物が生え、色々の動物が棲んでいます。夜明けの森から沢山のアゲハチョウが海に向かって飛んで行きます。海峡を渡って珊瑚海の島を目指しているのでしょう。木の枝に見えるのは太陽鳥の巣でしょうか？いいえ、これは毛虫の巣、夜の蝶の育児所です。

Qeenslanders of hairy-catarpillars?

There are various plants and animals in Good Wood Park of the back court of my apartment. At dawn numerous swallowtails fly away from the forest toward the sea. Probably they are crossing the straits heading for the islands of the Coral Sea. Are those that we can see on the branches the nests of sun birds? No, it's the nest of the hairy-caterpillars. In other words the nursery of the moths.

僕がアキレス腱を切ったテニスコート前の椰子の着生植物のビカクシダ（コウモリラン）。香具師（やし）と聞けば寄生虫を想像しますが、寄生植物のように木から栄養を奪ったりはしません。スズメバチの巣のように見えるのが貯水葉で、大鹿の角(麋角＝びかく)かコウモリのように見えるのが胞子葉。ケアンズは熱帯雨林に囲まれていますから、沢山の種類の着生植物や寄生植物が見られます。日本では60歳後も働いて若者の就業機会を奪い、30歳過ぎの寄生虫の子供に小遣いをあげているとＴＶで言っていましたが本当ですか？

Spoiled children and parents

Erk horn fern(bat orchid)that clings to the trunk of the palm tree in front of the tennis court where I cut my Achilles tendon is a kind of aerial plant. We often imagine “palms” as the parasite but they don't snatch away the nutrition from other plants like the parasite plants. The thing that looks like a hornet nest is the water leaf or the reservoir and another thing that looks like an antler or a bat is the spore leaf. Being surrounded by the tropical rain forest, you can see lots of aerials and parasite plants in Cairns. Once I saw on TV; in Japan people at their age of over 60 have been working, snatching away the career opportunity from younger people and even giving allowance to their childen at their age of over 30. Is that really what happening there?
