旧友と再会

5月31日(木)快晴

昨日神戸のホテル・ニューオータニで藤原紀香と陣内の結婚披露宴が行われました。それとは全く無関係ですが、先月広島大学教授から神戸のアジア防災センターに転勤した友人の横堀君が、大阪に僕を訪ねて来ました。明子も合流し、ミナミでたこ焼き、天満でハモを食べました。

The wedding party of Norika Hujiwara and Jinnai was held at Hotel New Otani in Kobe yesterday. There is no connection with that but one of my old friends, Professor Yokobori who had transferred from Hirosima Uni to Asia Disaster Prevention Center in Kobe, visited me in Osaka. Akiko also joined us and we had Takoyaki in Minami and sea eel in Tenma.

The theme of my travel this time is the aquarium crawling. I started it with visiting Kaiyukan in Osaka. It’s a shame that there are only one whale shark and manta ray.

I stayed over night in Tokyo last night and move to Osaka by Shinkansen today. My friend Akiko whom I met in Sydney is from Osaka. She took me to Tenma and we had Okonomiyaki there. Tonight I’m staying at Hotel Nikko Bayside Osaka that is in a verge of selling itself.

マングローブ

マングローブは木の根が浮き上がって人の形に見えることから「人の森」と名づけられました。午後ケアンズ飛行場を発ち、夜には「人の森」東京へ。相変わらず米ドルと日本円が下落しています。6年前に60円だった１豪ドルが現在100円。日本から豪州への観光客も減っています。逆に弱い通貨の日本に行くのは東南アジア旅行と同じ気分です。今朝の新聞によるとOZの平均年収は580万円だそうです。

Mangrove

People named the tree “mangrove” because their roots look like people when they rise to the surface of the water. I’m leaving Cairns this afternoon for Tokyo, the men-grove city. US dollar and Yen have been declining still. AU$1 was 60yen 7 years ago and it is 100yen now. The number of the tourists from Japan to Australia is decreasing. On the contrary visiting Japan in which the currency is weak is the same contentment as visiting East-south Asia. I read in the paper this morning that the average annual income in Australia now is 5,800,000 in yen.

ケアンズ飛行場はマングローブ林の湿地帯に作られました。だからターミナル・ビルも滑走路もマングローブに囲まれています。飛行場周辺にはいくつかのハイキング・コースがあり、木道を通ってマングローブ林の動植物の観察ができます。雨季に長雨が続くと滑走路が冠水して、飛行機の離発着ができなくなることもあります。

Cairns airport was built on the swamp with mangroves. Its terminal building and runway are surrounded by mangrove forest. There are several trekking courses beside the airport and you can observe animals and plants in the mangrove forest walking along the wooden path. If the rain lasts for a long term in the rainy season airplanes cannot take off or land by the flood on the runway.

ココナツは樹高が高いので、葉や実が落下して怪我人が出る場合があります。ケアンズ市役所では結果防止のために花を摘んだり、落ちた葉や実を片付けるのに苦労しています。人里離れたビーチには沢山のココナツが落ちています。それを割って中の果汁を飲むのは勝手ですが、炎天下の重労働。北国のスキー同様、南国の椰子の実割りは大人のたしなみ。

Coconut crush

Coconut trees are so high that people are sometimes injured in an accident of being hit with their leaves or fruits fell. Cairns council work hard on picking flowers or put away the leaves and fruits that fell on the ground in order to prevent from those accidents. You can find a lot of coconuts on the beaches that are out of the way. You can crush them and drink its juice anytime but it’s a hard work under the strong sunshine. It’s the refined manner in the tropical country just like skiing in snow country.

ウツボカズラ

食虫植物のウツボカズラは東南アジアと中心に７０種が確認されています。ほとんどが高温多湿を好み、ケアンズ周辺にも自生種があります。気候が適しているので、日本の植物園に展示されているものと違い、ハエや蚊の大群がやって来ても大丈夫なほど巨大な株になります。葉の先の壷には消化液が３分の１くらい入っていますが、食後に飲んでも胃の助けにはなりません。

Nepenthes

Nepenthes, one of the species in carnivorous plant family are identified their 70 different species found in the world mainly in east south Asia. Most of them like hot and humid environment. There are their original species living around Cairns. Being different from the ones displayed in Japanese botanic garden they grow huge individuals so that they can protect themselves from swarm of flies or mosquitoes. One third of the pot at the tip of the leaf is filled with digestive fluid but it would not be a big help for your stomach, even if you drink it after dinner.

トリニティー・ビーチでローカルの一番人気はこのイタリアン・レストラン。釜焼きの薄い生地のピザは絶品。木造のやや古い平屋建てで、勿論海も見えます。アメリカ嫌いでヨーロッパ寄りのOZは、コンクリート、ガラス、金属、電飾の画一的で子供だましのデザインを嫌います。僕たちも同感です。お台場やTDLや六本木で食事をして、どこが楽しいのでしょうか？

Restaurants for grownups

The most popular local restaurant in Trinity Beach is this Italian one. Home stove-baked, thin based pizza is superb. It’s an old, wooden single-storied building and you can enjoy the ocean view. Ozs who don’t like American taste and show their favor to Europe hate detest uniform and childish design by concrete, glass, metal or illumination. We have similar taste. We don’t understand why it’s fun to eat in Odaiba, Tokyo Disney Land, or Roppongi.

VUE locates on the top of the hill of Trinity Beach. Under the hill there’s a big, 2 storied modern restaurant and you can walk through the corridor to go there. There are also bar, porkies, TAB and pool. The restaurant upstairs you can enjoy meals looking to the sea.

ケアンズは猛烈な建設ラッシュ。建設労働者の不足により僕たちの新しいアパートも工事が遅れて、完成は12月になりそうです。現在住んでいるヨーキーズ・ノブもいい所なので、年内に引越しできればいいかな。海側のテラスからの眺め。水平線が丸く見えます。「時々イルカも見える」と現場監督。地上ではプール工事の真っ最中です。

Cairns is right in the construction boom. The completion of the construction of our new apartment will be delayed to December because of the shortage of building workers. Yorkeys Knob where we are living now is also our favorite place, so it will be no problem, if we can move into new place sometime within this year. The picture is the view from the sea side terrace of VUE. Horizontal line seems round. On the ground the construction of swimming pool has been taking place busily.

市立図書館の庭のイチジクの大木はフルーツ・バット(flying fox)のねぐらになっています。ケアンズ周辺はマンゴ、パパイア、バナナ、ライチなどの大生産地。食べ物には不自由はありません。一方街路樹のガジュマルは7色のインコ、ロリキートのねぐら。夕方になると数万羽のロリキートの大群がけたたましく鳴きながらシティーに戻ってきます。入れ替わりにフルーツバットの大群が悠然と夜空に飛び立っていきます。

The huge fig trees in the garden of municipal library are good roost of fruit bats (flying foxes). The areas in and around Cairns is the rich fruits yield of mangoes, papayas, bananas and lychees. There’s no fear of the shortage of food for fruit bats. On the other hand banyans lining up on the street are the roost of seven colored birds, lorikeets. After the dusk ten thousands of lorikeets fly back to the city singing loudly. As a substitute for them a large army of fruit bats fly away to the night sky calmly.

5月20日(日)快晴

市立図書館は広い庭の大木に囲まれた瀟洒な建物です。外観は立派ですが、内容はあまり充実していないようです。蔵書は少ないし、視聴覚関係も貧弱です。シドニーの友人たちは読書好きが多かったし、電車やビーチで本を読む人を多く見かけました。ケアンズは本屋も少ないようです。多分、熱帯にいるとあまり本を読む気分にはなれないのでしょうね。

Cairns municipal library is an elegant building surrounded by the big trees in the huge garden. The external appearance is magnificent but the content isn’t. The collection of books and the audiovisual aids are quite poor. Most of my friends in Sydney liked reading. I saw people reading books on the train and also on the beach. There are only a few bookstores in Cairns. Perhaps the tropics are not suitable for reading.

アボリジニの狩猟道具ではブーメランが有名です。しかしブーメランは命中率が良くないし、殺傷力も強くはありません。これは主に鳥を採る道具で、1度に5枚くらい投げます。大動物の狩猟には弓矢や槍を使います。槍は普通に投げると30mしか飛びませんが、写真のような補助具を用いると100m以上飛びます。

A boomerang is famous as one of the aboriginal hunting goods. However, it doesn’t have a good accuracy rate nor killing power. It is mainly used as the hunting tool to catch the birds. Aborigine throws about 5 boomerangs all at once. The bows and arrows or spears are used to hunt bigger animals. The spears can go only 30ms by throwing them but they can reach farther than 100m if you use some supporting gears.

ユミと色々な国を訪れ、お国柄のダンスを見る機会が時々あります。ショウの最後に観客と一緒に踊る局面になると、決まって僕が指名されます。熱帯雨林でも舞台でアボリジニのダンサーと踊りました。僕も立派な芸術家か芸人です。

I visit a lot of different countries with Yumi and we see some local dance shows there. After the show when dancers try to dance with some of the audience on the stage they always pick me up. I danced with Aboriginal dancers on the stage in a tropical rain forest. I should be a great artist or a performer.

街角の芸術家

美術館の横でアボリジニのおじさんが椰子の葉で作った工芸品を売っています。作品は4点。アーチストの被っている帽子、目の前にある果物かご、矢印の先にある熱帯魚とカエル。観光客の注文があると目の前で、5分間くらいで作品を作り上げます。見事なパーフォーマンスです。ケアンズ周辺には多くのアボリジニの村があります。

The artist on the town corner

An Aborigine craftsman is selling handcrafts that are made of palm leaves beside the art gallery. There are 4 works of him; the hats that are the same as he’s wearing, the fruit baskets placed in front of him, the tropical fish and frogs that are pointed by an arrow. When the tourists have some specific orders he completes his crafts in front of them in about 5 min. It’s an amazing technique. There are a lot of Aboriginal villages around Cairns.
