日曜大工で10箇所の戸棚に棚を増設。本職の大工さんは本日全ての作業を終了するそうです？実に15ヶ月の竣工の遅れ。それでも10％値引きさせたから得したかも。ブラインドも設置完了、大半の家具も搬入済み。しかしテレビ台は借り物のまま、ハイチェアーと絵が未到着。「月と千羽鶴」は1週間後に配送されるそうです？ユミは一日千秋の思いで待ち焦がれています。

I have installed some shelves in the 10 cabinets in my place. Our professional carpenters have declared they would finish all their works in my place today? That is 15 months delay of its completion in deed. No matter how it delayed I have got 10% discount so I must have stood to gain some. The blinds have been installed and most furniture has been delivered. We are still borrowing a TV unit and our high chairs and paintings are not delivered yet. “The moon and the 1000 cranes” will be delivered in a week?? Yumi is eagerly looking forward to it.

豪州の家は広くても収納スペースが少ない。戸棚は沢山あっても中の仕切り棚が少ない。これはライフ・スタイルの相違。OZは旅先でも日常でも小物を買い込みません。便利グッズや電子機器にも凝りません。面倒な調理をしないので食器や什器も必要最低限。おしゃれもしないので、衣服・バッグ・靴・装身具も最小限。だから引越しのたびに戸棚に棚を増設します。日曜大工の強い味方は電動ノコギリと電動ドリル。

Australian houses are spacious but there isn’t much storage space. There are enough cabinets but not so many shelves in them. It is deprived of the difference of life style. OZs don’t buy small objects during trips or in their daily lives. They are not interested in witty gadgets or electronic devices. They keep the minimum amount of plates and utensils as they don’t cook complicated dishes. They also keep the minimum amount of clothes, bags, shoes, and accessories as they rarely dress up. So I install some shelves in the cabinets every time we move. The most useful tools for do-it-yourselfer are the electric saw and the electric drill.

若者が海外で苦労するのは貴重な体験。しかし日本人ワーホリの大半は「外こもり」。OZの嫌う皿洗い、清掃員、農場労働者として時給1000円以下で働いています。日本の最低賃金が700円、豪州が1400円では当然かも。豪州の刑務所では受刑者に1日1万円を支給。先住民も生活保護のお金で朝から酒びたり。先住民のリーダーたちは「ワーホリ制度を廃止して先住民に仕事を」と訴えています。中山国交相がアイヌ差別発言で辞任。

It is the precious experience for them that young people toil overseas. But most Japanese working holiday makers are overseas-concealers. They work as kitchen hands, cleaners, or farmers getting $10 or less per hour. There is no surprise as the minimum rate in Japan is $7 and it is $14 in Australia. The prisoner in Australia is paid $100 a day. Aboriginal people get drunk from morning abusing the welfare. Aboriginal leaders are appealing the government saying “Abolish the working holiday system and give jobs to aboriginal people.” Mr. Nakayama, the minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism has been resigned making a slip of the tongue discriminating Ainu.

早春の今の時期ケアンズの旬の果物はイチゴ、ミカン、ネーブル。いずれも1kg500円前後。こちらのイチゴは大粒で甘みが少ない。ミカンは味はいいけど大型で皮がむきにくく、種が多い。ネーブルは絶品。最初は食べにくく感じても、毎朝2個ずつ挑戦すれば1週間で上手に食べられるようになります。ちなみにネーブルの原義はへそ。今朝の気温は25度、湿度は76％。

Seasonal fruit in Cairns now are strawberries, mandarins, and navels. Any of them is around $5 per kilo. OZ strawberries are big and not so sweet. Mandarins are quite sweet but too big and hard to peel. They also have too many pips. Navels are excellent! If you think it is hard to peel, try 2 navels every morning and you will find better way how to eat them skillfully in a week. By the way the original meaning of navel is umbilicus. Today’s temperature is 25degrees, humidity, 76%.

Taking the fiscal action means they are cleaning up the mess of banking facilities. US government has to input $70,000,000,000 tax money (Japanese national budget is $84,000,000,000). Are they going to demand Japan some capital injection for keeping the world economic stability? Banking facilities that are maliciously smarter than the government are trying to shirk all the bad debt to the government and as a result, the people have to owe the debt. Ex-prime minister, Mr Koizumi has been retired. He seemed to know when to quit, however, he probably didn’t. He will settle his second son as his successor. 13 of those 18 ministers in Mr. Aso’s new cabinet are descendent representatives. Their family business is becoming the parliamentarians. Yum-yum tax! On the other hand, in the US Mr. Bush will buy $70,000,000,000 bad debt, introducing the same policy as Japanese government after the bubble era. In other words he will save the banking facilities by inputting tax money. I think if he wanted to take some fiscal action, he should choose to use preference shares to infuse capital. 豪州全体が地球温暖化による水不足に苦しんでいますが、ケアンズは別天地。モリス湖はケアンズから南西22km、海抜500m。かつての銅山跡地に1976年完成した巨大人造湖。総工費6億5000万円と日本より桁違いに安いのは、コンクリート製ではなく岩と土で作ったダムだから。危機管理のため完成当初からボート、キャンプ、遊泳など人造湖周辺への立ち入り禁止。湖畔唯一のカフェが10：00amから3：00pmまでオープン。

Every state in Australia has struggled with the water shortage had caused by global warming but Cairns is a different world. Lake Morris locates 22km south west of Cairns and 500m high above the sea level. It is a huge artificial lake built in the abandoned copper mine in 1976. The total construction fee was $6,500,000 and that is incommensurably lower than it costs in Japan because this dam is made of rocks and earth but concrete. For the crisis management the artificial lake has been prohibiting an entry by boating, camping, and swimming since its completion. The only café that locates besides the lake opens from 10:00am to 3:00pm.

朝の散歩でいつも会う山師のおじさん。早朝のビーチで海水浴客が落とした硬貨を金属探知機で捜しています。豪州の硬貨は5円から200円まで6種類。「毎日の水揚げはどれくらい？」と尋ねると「ハイシーズンで1日1000円前後、魚釣り感覚だよ」とのこと。たまにはデジカメ、携帯、MP3プレーヤー、イヤリングなどの外道（げどう）もあるそうです。機会があったらカンボジアで地雷探しに協力して欲しい。

A charlatan whom I meet every morning during walking is looking for some coins which swimmers have dropped. Australian coins have 6 varieties from ￠5 to ＄20. I asked “How much do you get every day?” He said, ”Around $10 a day during the high season. I feel the same as I feel when fishing.” Sometimes he gets a digital camera, a mobile phone, a MP3 player, an ear ring or other out of purpose games. I want him join to look for the land mines in Cambodia if he had a chance.

トリニティー・ビーチのエスプラネードには200m置きに無料駐車スペースと無料BBQコンロがあります。スーパーではBBQ食材ミート・セットを売っていて構成内容は牛ヒレ、ハンバーグ、ソーセージの3人用で1000円前後。この他にタマネギを炒め、目玉焼きの両面炒め、食パンとジュースかコーラがOZの典型的な安上がりBBQパーティー。ビーチでの飲酒は禁止されています。

There are a free car park and a free BBQ stove every 200m on Esplanade in Trinity Beach. You can get the BBQ meat set, tree, beef fillet, Hamburg steak, and sausage with about $10 for 3 from the supermarket. In addition to it, you fry some onions and eggs turn over, and have some bread and juice or coke. It is the reasonable and typical OZ style BBQ party. Drinking on the beach is prohibited.

エスプラネード(海岸通り)の道路標識。豪州は情緒主義ではなく徹底した合理主義。トイレはトイレット。米国のように休憩室とか粉部屋とか美名は使いません。10進法のメートル法表示。左450mのトイレは個室で男女共用。右300mのトイレは男女別。どちらにもシャワーがあり、海水浴客は着替えが可能。S禁は停車禁止の意味。「歩行者は車に道を譲れ」つまり車優先社会です。電線は都市部では地下配線ですが田舎では電柱。電柱はコンクリート製ではなく木製。

This is a sign on Esplanade. Australia is not the country that believes sentimentalism but drastic rationalism. A toilet is a toilet, neither a rest room nor a powder room as they call it in the US. OZs use the decimal metric system. There are unisex toilets that go on the left for 450m and single-gender toilets go on the right for 300m. They all have the shower room so the swimmers can get changed there. No-S means no stopping. “Pedestrians give way to traffic” means it is the car-priority society. The electric cable is wired underground in the cities but they have the power poles in the rural area. The power pole is made of wood but concrete.

豪州の農業地帯ではハイウエーの両側に自転車道とダート・ロードと馬の道があります。ダート・ロードは四駆やオフロード・バイク御用達。ほとんどのビーチは馬、四駆、バイクの乗り入れを禁止しています。飼い犬に関しては3つの区域に分類。持ち込み禁止区域、手綱つきで持ち込み可能な区域、犬の運動用に手綱なしでも持ち込み可能な区域。飼い主は糞の始末を義務付けられています。

In the agriculture area in Australia there are the bike path, the dirt road, and the horse road at both besides of the high way. The dirt road is for 4WDs and off-road motor cycles. Horses, 4WDs and motor cycles are prohibited in most beaches. As for dogs there are 3 categories; the prohibited area, the area accepted for dogs lead, and the exercise area for dogs without being lead. The master must clear off the dung.

チョウショウバトは伝書鳩と違って糞害は少なく、夫婦仲が良くて、雛を乳糜（ピジョン・ミルク）で育てます。鳴き声は日本の山鳩と同じで「デデッポウ」。「タマゴ、タマゴ」、「ホットドッグ」、「一等賞」、「テレビっ子」、「アナゴ、タマゴ、110円」と鳴くと言う人もいます。我が家に出入りしている壁塗り職人が新鮮な鶏卵を持ってきてくれました。芸術家に飼われた鶏は卵の色にも大きさにもマンネリ化しないように気を使うようです。

Peaceful doves, unlikely pigeons cause few feces pollution. They have happy marriage lives and feed babies with pigeon milk. They sing as same as Japanese doves. Some people say they say “Hot dog”, “Number 1”, “Couch potatoes”, or “Eel, egg, one dollar”. Our painter brought us some fresh eggs. Hens that are fed by an artist seem to lay various colors and sizes of eggs to avoid mannerism.

カラスやインドハッカの攻撃を恐れてツバメもチョウショウバトも人家の軒下に好んで巣作りをします。OZに人気のある太陽鳥もその口。数日前にドライブ中に見かけた太陽鳥の巣。北京の鳥の巣ではパラ五輪が昨夜閉会。人気があるから保護してもらえるけど、カラスやトキだったら追い出されるでしょう。昨年の引越しで家を追い出された時、2日目のモテルの庭の大木が大コウモリのねぐらになっていて宿代がやけに安かった。

Swallows and peaceful doves build their nests under the eaves of human houses as they want to avoid from the attack by crows and common mynas. The sunbird that is popular among Australians has the same habit. This is the picture of the nest of sunbird that I found while I was driving several days ago. The Paralympics closed last night in Beijing. Popular sunbirds are protected but crows and ibises will be abandoned. When I was abandoned during our moving last year I stayed at a motel and its garden had a big tree with the roost of fruit bats and the accommodation fee was quite cheep.

トリニティー・ビーチは野鳥が多い。僕たちのリビングのテラスにも朝夕ツバメがやって来て巣作りに適した場所を探している様子。僕の書斎のテラスの日除けの庇の片隅にチョウショウバトが巣を作り2羽の小鳩が孵っています。ウズラくらい小さな熱帯系の山鳩です。鳴き声はきれいだけど獰猛なインドハッカが小鳩を狙っているので巣立ちまで僕も気を許せません。

The bird that builds a nest near house

There are a lot of wild birds on Trinity Beach. Some swallows come to our terrace to find a propter place to make their nest in the morning and evening. The couple of peaceful doves had built a nest in the corner of the eaves of my study and 2 babies have been hatched. They are small tropical doves and are about the same size as quails. They are beautiful singers but some savage common mynas are targeting the baby doves so I have to beware of them until they fledge.

ブラインドのない家で借り物の家具で暮らすのはどうも落ち着かない。しかし最近ユミはインテリアや絵にやたら詳しくなっている様子。デザイナーや画家と組まれたら女3人組に僕が対抗できるはずはありません。壁塗り中の家にいても仕方がないので貸し切りのプールへ。人っ気のない施設や場所は嫌という人がいるけど僕は全く平気と言うか快適。願わくばVUEの売れ行きが芳しからぬことを。

I feel out of place living in a unit with no blinds and surrounded with someone’s furniture. Recently Yumi has been quite knowledgeable about interior design and paintings. If she team up with the designer and the painter there would be no way I can stand up to the 3 lady-team. As I had nothing to do in my unit being painted I went to the reserved swimming pool for me. Some people say they don’t like unmanned facilities or places but I feel rather comfortable. I’m secretly hoping the units of VUE will have poor selling.
