アテネの見所はパルテノン神殿、ゼウス神殿、１８９６年のオリンピック・スタジアム、大統領官邸、国会議事堂、土産物屋の並ぶプラカ地区。日本流に言うと、パルテノンは八幡様、ゼウス神殿はお稲荷さん。ヨーロッパ初体験のユミのためにタクシーで市内観光。

The best attraction for the tourists in Athen is the Parthenon temple, Zeus temple, Olympic stadium, the Executive Mansion, parliament house, and Puraka area where souvenir shops line up. In Japanese way of speaking, Parthenon temple is the Hatiman-shrine and Zeus one is the Inari-shrine. I went to the city tour by the cab for Yumi because it was the first time for her to visit Europe.

午後４時から８時までユミと外出。徒歩で旧市街地まで行きましたが、アヤソフィア宮殿は５時で閉館なのでブルーモスクを見学。観光客相手のパン屋さんが屋台を出していますが、人の流れを見て時々店を移動します。

I went out with Yumi from 4:00pm to 8:00pm. We walked to the Old Town, Ayasofya but it was already closed at 5pm, so we visited Blue Mosque. There were some bread vendors only for the tourists on the road, and they often move as the pedestrians flow.

左腕の骨折の患者と２人の肺炎の患者を連れて病院を受診。看護師は船内待機なので１人で３人の面倒を見ないといけません。１日がかりで船に戻ったのは午後１０時。その後ユミと夜のイスタンブルを散策。トルコ民謡の生演奏のレストランで夜食。

I went to the hospital accompanying 2 fracture patients and a pneumonia one. Nurse Mikami being inboard, I had to take care of 3 different patients. After staying half a day at the hospital, I returned our ship at 10:00pm. I went for a night walk Istanbul with Yumi. We had late dinner at the restaurant with performance of Turkish folk songs.

明日はイスタンブル入港ですが、トルコ各地で同時多発テロが発生。下船できるかどうかは現地の情報待ち。船内も２人の肺炎患者が発生した他に、１人が甲板で転倒して左腕を骨折、もう１人がドアにはさんで指を潰すなど騒然とした雰囲気。

Peace boat is entering into Istanbul port tomorrow where simultaneous terrorism occurred in several places in Turkey. Whether we can go ashore or not is depends on local information. Our ship is also busy with 2 pneumonia patients, 1 passenger who had got his left arm fractured by falling on the deck, and another one who had caught her finger in the door.

ラクダに乗ってピラミッドを巡りましたが、あれって結構不潔なんです。ラクダ本体も鞍もターバンもね。アフリカでは定番のノミ、シラミ、ダニ、南京虫などに刺された患者が今回も受診しています。ラクダに乗ったり、太鼓を買った人に被害が集中しています。

I travel round the pyramids riding a camel, and found out camel itself, the saddle, and also the turban are quite unclean. I had the patients who had bitten by common African insect louses, lice, ticks, bedbugs. The patients are major among those who rode camels or bought the drums.

ハト料理はエジプトの名物料理。農村にはサイロのような立派なハト小屋が並んでいます。ハトの糞は肥料に利用され、頭数が増えると食用に回されます。このハト料理が急性胃腸炎の原因ではないかとの説もあります。今回のツアーはハト料理ではなくて、ボラ料理だったからか、胃腸炎の患者はゼロ。

Pigeon shed of Egypt

Pigeon dish is one of Egyptian specialties. There are a lot of big pigeon shed like the silos in the farm village. The droppings of the pigeons are used for fertilizer, and when the number of heads increases, it is utilized for food. Some people say this pigeon dishes is the major cause of acute gastroenteritis. this time they didn’t eat pigeon but mullet, so that could be the reason why there were no patients who had stomachache.

高熱の患者を病院に送り届けた後、車で３時間のカイロへ。１０００人の乗客のうち７００人がピラミッド・ツアーに参加しています。毎回のようにツアー参加者には急性胃腸炎の患者が大量に発生します。ツアーは往復１４時間・日帰りの強行軍。その原因は疲労、水、食事、高温と冷房、あるいはスフィンクスのたたり？

The mystery of pyramid

After delivering the patient who had a high fever to the hospital I spent 3 hours heading Cairo by bus. 700 out of 1000 passengers participate in the pyramid tour. Every time many acute gastroenteritis patients come to my clinic after the tour. It’s a 14-hour tough day tour. Is it caused by fatigue, bad water and meal, high temperature and air-conditioning, or are they under a curse of sphinx?

虫垂炎の疑いのある患者をスエズ運河の入り口で緊急下船させてほっと一息つく間もなく、41℃の発熱者が発生。船旅で怖いのはコレラとマラリア。船内では何の検査もできないので、陸上の病院でマラリアの血液検査が必要です。ポートサイドもまた船内待機になるのでしょうか？

Right after sending the patient who is suspected to have an acute appendicitis ashore without taking a breath there was a new patient who got high fever of 41℃. On the voyage the scariest diseases are cholera and malaria. As I can’t give any medical test on the ship, I must send the patient to the hospital on land for malaria blood test. Should I stay aboard at the next port, Portside again?

砂漠からの熱風と海水温度の上昇で船内は蒸し風呂状態。エリトリアのビーチ・リゾートの海水温度は32℃。海水の透明度も高く見た目はきれいですが、上下水道の普及率は５０％以下。トイレのない家庭も多いとあっては泳がないほうが無難？

Inside of our ship is as humid as it is in the steam bath because of the hot blast blows from the desert　and temperature rise of sea water. The seawater temperature at Eritrean beach resort was 32℃. The transparency of the seawater was high at a glance. The number of household the waterworks and sewage system is used is under 50%. As they say there are many households that have no toilets it’s probably better for us giving up swimming.

今日の気温は４５度。観光が未開発なので、ホテルやレストランでもメニューが充実していません。冷房もないし、ハエは多いし、食器類も清潔ではありません。お土産も特に開発されていないので、素朴な絵葉書か、塩くらいしかありません。ラクダは１頭２万円くらいだそうです。

Today’s temperature is 45 degrees.　As tourism hasn’t been developed well yet the menu is pretty poor at the hotels and restaurants. There is no air-conditioning and too many flies and the table wares are not clean. There are no special souvenirs except simple picture postcards or local salt. You might buy a camel for about 20,000 Yen.

A boat of desert

The population of Massawa, the entrance to Eritrea is 50,000. There are only about 10 cabs in this city. We see only a few trucks and busses. The transportation of carrying daily goods still depends on camels and also the donkey wagons.

Eritrea that became independent 13 years ago is one of the poorest countries in the world. This is the 3rd time for me to visit here. As they deny depending on other country the development of this country proceeds very slowly. The damages of independence war remain vividly in many places here. There are no tourists to visit here but the members of Peace boat.

繁華街を外れると道路わきに小さな掘立小屋が並んでいます。近所の人が野菜や果物やジュースなど、わずかの商品を並べて売っています。例年ほど暑さが厳しくありません。今年は雨が多くて農家は豊作だそうです。

There are shanties along the roads in the outskirts of business quarters. Local people are selling some limited kinds of goods, such as vegetables, fruits, and juice. It’s not so hot as usual. This year there’s a lot of rain and so they have good harvest.

Near the quay that our Peace Boat arrived Kenyan people welcomed us playing local musical instruments and dance. The run-upped gift shops lined up at the quay. The goods were nothing unique but stereotyped cloth, necklaces and the animal shaped ornaments.

マラリアよけの蚊帳

ケニアはマラリアの汚染地域。マラリア予防薬を服用していても１００％防御はできません。だからコテッジのベッドには立派な蚊帳がかかっています。シングル・ベッド２つがぴったりくっつけられているので、中年男性の乗客たちは蚊帳をたたんで仕切りにして、防虫スプレーをかけて寝たそうです。

Kenya is a contaminated area by malaria. Taking the malarial preventive medicine cannot prevent us from the disease for 100%. Therefore, nice mosquito net is hung in the bedroom at the cottage. As 2 single beds are placed right next each other, middle-aged male passengers made the divider with folded mosquito net and used the moth repellent spray when they going to sleep.
