カラスミの発祥地はイタリアと中国。日本へは中国から伝来。イタリア料理ではカラスミ（ボッタルガ）をパスタに入れたり、サラダやピザのトッピングに使用します。豪州はボラやサワラが沢山獲れるので、良質のカラスミを生産。日本製や台湾製は油脂が多く、汚染も気になります。

Botargo

The birthplace of botargo is Italy and China. It was introduced to Japan from China. Italian chef uses to add into pasta or to put it on salad or pizza. As lots of mullets and Spanish mackerels are caught in Australia they produce high quality botargo. The products from Japan or Taiwan contain a lot of fats and oil. Also I’m worried about contamination.

豪州・タスマニアで獲れる3‐7㎏の巨大蟹。ＯＺは見向きもしませんが旨味が濃いので中国人が珍重し、中華街ではキロ15,000円。ユミと一緒にクリスマス・イブに2度目の挑戦。挑戦で思い出しましたが、丸々と太った朝鮮共和国(帝国の誤り？)の3代目皇帝に似ていなくもない。

Imperial crab

This is a 3-7 kg size gigantic crab that is often caught in Tasmania. Clumsy OZs never pay the least attention to it but as it has a great flavor Chinese esteem it highly, and it is sold in $200 per kg in China Town. We ordered it on Christmas Eve for the second trial for us. “Second trial” just reminds me of my thoughts - the fat body could look a little like the third emperor of Korea Republic.

昨夜遅くケアンズに戻りました。シドニーは最高気温が23度で過ごしやすかった。25日にはゴースト・タウンのようだった街が、26日にはバーゲンセールのために人の波。着ている服も垢抜けています。満員電車や雑踏が苦手な僕たちはビーチに避難。やはり田舎暮らしが適しています。

Year-end clearance sale in Sydney

We returned to Cairns late last night. The weather of Sydney was so pleasant since the highest temperature was 23 degrees. The downtown that looked like a ghost town on the 25^th became to the town with a surging crowd of people going to the bargain sale on the 26^th. People there dress sophisticatedly. As we are not good at being on the trains with full of people or bustling downtown we evacuated to the beach. The country life suites us well, after all.

1988年、豪州建国200年を記念してシドニー湾の貿易港を大規模に再開発した夜景の美しい観光スポット。シドニー中心部や中華街に隣接するのでアクセスも容易。豪州近海の海洋生物5000種を展示する水族館や海洋博物館があるので、シドニーの5年間もかなり楽しく過ごしました。

This is a touring spot of great night view that was finished in 1988 by redeveloping the trading port of Sydney Cove in memory of 200-year anniversary of Australian national foundation. Adjoining Sydney CBD and China Town it makes an easy access. There is an aquarium and maritime museum that have 5,000 kinds of Australian sea lives so I enjoyed those 5 years a lot while living in Sydney.

シドニーは間違いなく世界一美しい都市。人口は450万人。その多くが海沿いに住んでいます。シダのように長く複雑に入り組んだシドニー湾が都市全体の美しい景観を創出。オペラハウス前からフェリーで20分のマンリーは湾側と外海側に2つのビーチを持つリゾート・タウンです。

Manly Beach

Sydney is certainly the most beautiful city in the world. The population is 4.5M and most of them live oceanfront. The Sydney Cove sits intricately long like a fern leaf and this makes the beautiful landscape of the entire city. Going for 20 minutes by ferry from in front of Opera House you can get to Manly, the resort town that has two beaches of one inside and the other outside of the Cove.

シドニーの中心は旧市役所のタウンホール。ホテルから徒歩10分の距離。5年前まで僕たちはタウンホールの斜め向かいの高層アパートに住んでいました。ダウンタウン、中華街、ダーリン・ハーバーに隣接した便利な住まいでしたが、都会で暮らすのは無理でした。

Town Hall

Town Hall locates in the center of Sydney. It takes 10 minutes from our hotel to there on foot. Until 5 years ago we lived in the high-rise apartment that stands cater-corner of Town Hall. As it locates right next to downtown, China Town and Darling Harbor we had a quite convenient living but that city life was not for us.

聖メアリー教会

豪州カトリックの総本山。聖堂の長さは106ｍ、高さは46ｍ。ホテルからハイド・パークを横切って、セクハラ噴水前を通り過ぎると5分で聖メアリー教会。クリスマスのミサに大勢の信者が押し掛けています。対照的に繁華街はすべての店が閉まっていて、まるでゴースト・タウン。

St. Mary Cathedral

This is the head church of Australian Catholicism. It has 106m length and 46m height. Going across from Hyde Park from our hotel, passing the sexual harassment fountain you can get to St. Mary in 5 minutes. Lots of believers have gathered to attend the Christmas Mass. On the contrary, closing all the shops and the restaurants the downtown looks like a ghost town.

定宿のシェラトン・ホテルはハイド・パークに面しています。シドニーの中心部にある市民の憩いの場になっている広大な緑地帯。通りをはさんで北と南に分かれ、北側には第一次世界大戦の記念噴水があり、西にシドニータワー、東に聖メアリー教会が隣接します。

Our regular hotel, Sheraton faces on Hyde Park. It’s vast tract of green land zone, the place for citizen’s recreation and relaxation that locates in Sydney CBD. It is divided to northern and southern parts with the street in the middle. In the northern part there is WWⅠmemorial fountain. Sydney Tower is located in its west and St. Mary in its east.

年の瀬に豪州国内を旅行してもあまり良いことはありません。ほとんどの職場が今日から2週間の冬休みに入ります。多くの商店やカフェも閉店だし、美術館や博物館も休み。パリの年の瀬と同じで街にいるのは観光客だけ。もちろんオペラハウスでも何もやっていません。

It isn’t such a good idea to have an Australian domestic tour at the end of the year. Almost everyone has a 2-week’s winter holiday from today. Most shops and cafes are closed and so are the art galleries and museums. Just like Paris at the same time of the year people who are in the city are only tourists. Of course there is no performance in Opera House.

ケアンズとシドニーの距離は2700㎞、東京と香港くらいあります。飛行機で3時間、車では3日を要します。ケアンズは熱帯なのに夏は涼しく、シドニーは例年40度を超す猛暑。しかし今年のシドニーは冷夏で過ごしやすそう。田舎から出てくるとシドニーの夜景がやけにまぶしく感じます。

A night view of Sydney

The distance between Cairns and Sydney is 2,700km – it’s the same distance between Tokyo and Hong Kong. It takes 3 hours by air and 3 days by car. Although Cairns locates in tropic zone it’s cool in summer, on the other hand, it’s usually as hot as more than 40 degrees in Sydney. Surprisingly, the weather this summer is cool and bearable in Sydney. Since we came from the country side the night view of Sydney is too glare for us.

魔法のグラス

歳末大売り出しで見つけた魔法瓶タイプのグラス。強化ガラスの2重構造なので冷たい飲み物を入れると、氷が長持ちして汗をかきません。紅茶やカフェオレなど熱い飲み物にも使えます。唇に触れる厚さも気にならず、軽くて丈夫なので食洗機で洗っても大丈夫。2個で2400円は少し高め？

They are vacuum-bottle glasses that we found at some year-end clearance sale. They are double fracture of a strengthen glass - put some cold drink with ice in it and the ice cubes lasts long. The bottle doesn’t become sweaty. You can also use them for hot drinks such as cafe au lait. The sense of touching the thick glass with my lips is not bad at all when I drink with it. They are so light and stout that you can wash them in a dish washer. Is $30 for two of them a little expensive?

モールはクリスマス・プレゼントを買い求める人々で溢れています。豪州では電飾をチカチカさせたり、ＢＧＭを流す習慣はありません。ムードを盛り上げるのは子供と一緒に写真を撮るサンタ、フェイス・ペインター、着ぐるみの動物たち。身長が3ｍもある曲芸師もいます。

The mall is full of people who go buy Christmas presents. There isn’t such custom to sprinkle decorating lighting or to play BGM loudly in Australia. Those who liven up the Christmas are Santa Claus who poses with children for photography, the face painters and the men in the animal suits. There are also 3m-tall performers.

ケアンズのカジノでは毎晩マジック・ショーをやっています。入場料は1人4000円とやや高め。ＰＲのために海水プールの前で美女を空中に浮遊させる魔術師、サム・パワーズ。ややっ、吊り下げるワイヤーもなければ、下から支える棒もない！早速今夜ユミと一緒に見物に行きます。

The magic show is held every night in Cairns. It costs rather a lot to enter, $50 per head. Sam Powers is performing floating a beauty in air in front of the sea water swimming pool to attract people. Yikes, there is no wire to hung nor pole to support her! I have no reason to hesitate to see his performance with Yumi tonight.

クリスマス・ツリー

今年も日本全国ツリーだらけ。靖国神社や神道の起工式などにうるさく噛みつく市民団体もキリスト教には弱い？ケアンズ市のツリーは1本だけ。今年は市の中心部から海水プール前に設置場所が変更。毎年同じツリーを使用するのか結構くたびれています。周囲では今年最後のフリーマーケット開催中。

Christmas trees are everywhere throughout Japan this year again. Are those civic organizations that are vehemently to protest against Yasukuni Shrine or any Shinto-style construction ceremonies weak-kneed in front of Christianity? There is only one Christmas tree in Cairns. The site was changed from CBD to the front side of the sea water swimming pool this year. The same tree has probably been used repeatedly it seems to have become quite tired. The last flea market this year is being held around it.

In stead of admitting their liability, KEPC aims at resuming the operation of all their reactors striking a defiant pose. Nishinihon Newspaper Company (NNC) is the second biggest shareholder of KEPC and KEPC is also the large shareholder of NNC. Such cross-holdings are being quite common in other regions, too. Once upon a time they admired the wars and now they admire the reactors.
