深夜「サンシャイン・バー」→「洋上居酒屋・波へい」→「ヘミングウエイ・バー」とはしご酒の老人が２段ベッドから転落して左腕を骨折。シンガポール前で不幸中の幸い。１２：００シンガポール入港。三上看護士が２人の骨折患者を連れて陸上の病院へ。僕は船内待機で今回も上陸できません。

Fortunate fracture

After drinking in a few different places from sunshine bar, ocean pub “Namihei” to Hemingway bar, an old man fell off from the ladder of the double deck bed and got his left arm fractured. Fortunately, the misfortune occurred just before arriving in Singapore. Nurse Mikami went to the hospital overland accompanying 2 patients fractured. I could not land this time again because of my mission of waiting inboard.

ダナンから古都・フエに観光に出かけたユミがお土産に菅笠を買ってきました。毎回ベトナムを出港すると下痢や風の患者が増えるのに、今回は順調なスタートです。しめしめと思っていたら、甲板で転倒した若者が右腕を骨折。シンガポール前で不幸中の幸い。シンガポールを出れば、インド→ケニア→エリトリア→エジプト。ヨーロッパまでの１ヶ月間は、陸上にも良い病院はありません。

Straw cap of Vietnam

Yumi bought a Vietnamese straw cap for my gift at the old capital Hue. Every time after departing from Vietnam so many patients who are suffered from diarrhea or cold rush to our clinic, but this time it is pretty calm. When I was indulging in being not busy the young guy who slipped down on the deck and has got his right arm fractured came to see me. He was still lucky because the accident happened before arriving in Singapore. After departing Singapore our ship proceed to, India, Kenya, Eritrea, Egypt. For a month until arriving in Europe there is no any good hospital on the land.

ダナンでは５０年前の日本の農村風景が見られます。ベトナム人は陽気で、人懐っこく、親切です。言葉は良く通じないのに、交流プログラムに参加した乗客たちは、半日ですっかり仲良しになります。出港時には船上も岸壁も涙・涙・涙。毎回変わらぬ別れの光景です。

We can see the same scenery of Japanese farming village from 50 years ago in Danan. Vietnamese are cheerful, friendly, and kind. Although the passengers who participated in the interchange program have a hard time enjoying conversation with them, they become good friends with Vietnam students in half a day. When departing from Danan all the people both on board and quay soaked with tear & tear & tear. It is the same farewell spectacle every time.

台風の影響でベトナム到着が１日遅れました。ダナン港から街までは５ｋｍほどあるので徒歩は無理。岸壁にはたくさんのバイ・タクが客待ちをしています。寄港地での防災訓練のため、僕は外出を控えました。顔なじみのバイ・タク運転手のグエンが残念そう。彼はキム・タクそっくりです。

Bike taxi in Danan

We arrived in Vietnam 1 day behind the schedule because of the typhoon. The distance from Danan port to the city is about 5km, so you cannot walk. So many bike taxies are waiting for the tourists on the quay. I gave up going out because of the disasters drill held in the port of call. Guen, the bike taxi driver we know well showed me regrettable countenance. He looks very similer to Kim Taku.

クルー・バーの営業時間は２１：００から２：００。隣接して船大工の作業場と、もやい綱の置き場があり、どこかに伝書鳩が１年以上も前から住み着いています。人気のない日中にはバーの床に落ちているピーナツやチップスを食べています。この鳩はもう世界を5周くらいしているようです。

The business hour at the crew bar is from 9:00pm to 2:00am. There are work shops for ship carpenters and the space for keeping the mooring ropes next to the bar. A pigeon lives somewhere there for more than 1 year. During daytime when people are not around she eats peanuts and chips left on the floor of the bar. She already has traveled around the world about 5 laps.

クルー・バーはあまり清潔ではありません。はっきり言うと不潔で音楽が騒々しいので、日本人クルーはビールをテイクアウトして、キャビンで飲みます。しかし他のアジア人クルーのキャビンは狭いので、クルー・バーでダーツ・ゲームをしながら飲んでいます。

The Crew bar is not so clean. Frankly speaking, it’s messy and noisy with loud music so Japanese crews take away their beer and drink in the cabin. As the cabins of other Asian crews are narrow, they drink at bar enjoying darts game.

My Clinic is only 29 steps away from our cabin towards the bow side. It’s pretty comfortable distance. It is also 28 steps to the Crew bar towards the stern side. It’s quite a nice distance, too. Passengers are inhibited to enter there. With the benefit of the crew we can drink beer for 120 Yen.

バスルームは２ｍ×１．２ｍ。浴槽はなく、シャワーだけ。しかし僕たちは浴槽を使う習慣はないので大丈夫。ボディー用品の収納場所がもっとあれば快適でしょうが、大半の乗客は３人部屋や４人部屋ですから文句は言えません。船医の特典でユミの乗船代金は無料なのです。

Our bathroom is 2m×1.2m large. There is no bathtub but just a shower. Not having a habit of using the bathtub, we have no problems. If we have more space to keep body supplies, it will be more comfortable but we shouldn’t complain because most passengers stay in the room with other 2 or 3 people. Yumi’s embarkation is free with the privilege of me being the doctor on board.

僕たちの船室は４ｍ×４ｍ。窓はありません。ダブル・ベッドが１つと、２段のシングルベッドがあるので、本来は４人家族用の部屋。作り付けの机があり、その上の大きな鏡が便利です。２段ベッドの上段は折りたたんで掲示板として活用。下段はソファ代わりです。１ｍ幅の観音開きのクローゼットが２つあるので収納も余裕たっぷり。

Me and Yumi’s cabin

Our cabin is 4m×4m large. There is no window. It is good for a family of 4 people with a double bed and a double-deck single bed. There is an attached desk and the big mirror above is good. We folded the upper deck of the bed and use it as the bulletin board. Also we use the lower deck as the sofa. 2 closets that have 1m wide each with the folding double doors give us big enough storage space.

昨日は横浜から６５０人、本日は神戸から３５０人が乗船。横浜は雨天でやや盛り上がりに欠ける出港式でした。本日の神戸は少し肌寒い天候でしたが、テープが舞い、シャンペンを抜く音が威勢良く響きます。

Yesterday 650 people from Yokohama embarked and another 350 people did from Kobe today. Yokohama departure ceremony wasn’t so lively because of the rain. Although it’s a little chilly in Kobe, tape whirls and the sound of pulling out the champagne echoes powerfully.

We are departing Yokohama today. This is the 5th time for me to go on a cruise around the world and this time I’m going with Yumi. The girl with red shoes in Yamashita park is watching over refueling Peace Boat. As the price of petroleum has been increasing it could be a painful cruise. This song is the parody of the song from the time we held the castle in student building 40 years ago. “♪ The boy shaking the red flag, he was taken away by the police.”

横浜の大桟橋前のホテルに４泊。中華料理ももう食べ飽きました。日本で体重が３kg増量。運動不足解消のため、元町→港の見える丘公園→外人墓地を散策。今回日本では、函館、下田、横浜の３つの港の激動の歴史を探訪できました。靖国合祀と昭和天皇のメモのニュースは政治問題になりそうにありません。政治は死んだ、のかな？

Foreigner’s graveyard

We have been staying in the hotel in front of the large pier of Yokohama for 4 days. I’m already tired of Chinese food. In Japan I have put on 3kg. To get some exercise we walked around in Motomati, Minatonomieruoka park and all the way to foreigner’s graveyard. We visited 3 ports of Hakodate, Shimoda and Yokohama, and discovered drastic Japanese modern history. The news about Yasukuni shrine and Emperor Showa’s memo don’t seem to be any political problems to be discussed. Has Japanese politic died?

新橋で弁護士と会う用事のついでに３４年振りに母校の慈恵医大を訪ねました。付属病院は改築されていましたが、大学校舎は昔のまま。自治会のリーダーだった僕は２年間授業をサボって、学生会館に寝泊りしていました。しかし現代学生は勉学が忙しくて、政治活動は死滅したようです。

After 34 years I visited Jikei medical school in Shinbashi where I had an appointment to meet a lawyer. Although the attached hospital was reconstructed, university building remained as same as my school days. Being a leader of student union, I spent 2 years in this building without going to lecture. Nowadays all students being busy, political activity has died.

7月18日(火）曇時々雨

レンタカーで伊豆半島西海岸をドライブする予定でしたが、豪雨・天災の恐れがあるとのこと。下田市内観光の後、伊豆・踊り子号→みなとみらい線を乗り継いで、夕方横浜に戻りました。社内は吊り下げ広告と吊革の連続。豪州では見られない風景。青森でも北海道でも伊豆でも携帯は繋がらないし、インターネット・カフェもありません。都会偏重・若者やゲーム優先なのか、ＩＴ部門も想像以上に遅れていますね。

We were planning to drive on the west coast of Izu peninsula by rental car but we gave up because weather forecast said there is a possibility of torrential rain and natural disaster. After going to Shimoda city-sightseeing we returned to Yokohama in the evening transferring Izu Odoriko line to Minato Mirai line. There are so many bills and rings on the trains. We can’t see the same spectacles in Australia. Mobile phone didn’t work and there weren’t any internet cafes in Aomori, Hokkaido and Izu. It probably means city overemphasis or game priority for young generation. From some view point IT is out of date in Japan.

Japanese mobile phones and PCs are only for young guys?

豪州で知り合ったバレリーナの奈々と合流。「海の日」で3連休とあっては伊豆に行かざるを得ません。伊東の「海女の小屋」で昼食。下田で海水浴。伊豆のビーチはあまり綺麗ではありませんが、食事は安くて美味しい。現時点ではベトナムよりまだいいかも。

Dancer in Izu

We joined with ballerina, Nana whom we met first in Sydney. As today is a national holiday, the day of sea and the first day of 3 consecutive holidays we have no choice except going to Izu. We had our lunch at the restaurant “Shed of women diver” in Itoh and swam　ａｔ Shimoda beach. The beach of Izu isn’t so clean but seafood is tasty and reasonable. It’s maybe better than Vietnam at the moment.
