ケアンズの湿地帯はほとんどサトウキビ畑として利用されています。その昔サトウキビ（シュガー・ケーン）の害虫の甲虫類を撲滅するために、南米産のガマガエル（トード）を移入。生命力旺盛なガマは甲虫だけではなく、何でも食べるので在来種の昆虫・爬虫類・両生類が絶滅の危機にさらされています。このガマは体のイボイボから毒を出すので蛇も肉食獣も猛禽類も手出しはできません。夜になると電燈の周囲に沢山のガマが集まって来ます。隣家のフィルは「ガマはハエや蚊も食べるいい奴だ」と言いますが・・・。

Cane toad
The most swamp land in Cairns is utilized as sugarcane fields. In old days in order to eradicate beetles that eat sugar canes a kind of toad was brought from South America. The toad eats not only the beetles but almost everything, so indigenous insects, reptiles and amphibias are exposed to the crisis of extermination. As the cane toads soak poison from wart of its body, snakes, mammals and the predatory birds can not defeat them. In night they get together around the electric light. Phill, next neighbour says “they are the good ones because they eat flies and mosquitoes ” but….
