リプリーズ・レコードは1960年、フランク・シナトラがワーナー・ブラザーズ・レコードと共同出資して設立したレコード会社で、のちワーナー傘下のレーベルとなり、ニール・ヤング、ジョニ・ミッチェル、ランディ・ニューマン、ライ・クーダーらが所属。
キンクスやジミ・ヘンドリクスの米国での販売元でもあったが1976～87年の間ほぼ活動を休止、再開後はグリーン・デイ、エリック・クラプトンらの所属レーベルとして知られる。
分かりにくいんですよね、ワーナーは系列のレーベルがたくさんあって。
私が聞き始めた頃もWEAと称してワーナー・ブラザーズ、エレクトラ、アトランティックなどが一緒のグループとして日本のワーナーパイオニアから発売されてたし、あるいはフランク・ザッパやキャプテン・ビーフハートの場合ザッパの自主レーベルで制作してリプリーズがディストリビュートのみ担当する形。
ジョニ・ミッチェルの場合だとリプリーズからアサイラムに移り、アサイラムの社長が自分の名を冠して立ち上げたゲフィン・レコードに移り、90年代に再びリプリーズに戻ってくるとか。
しかし近年は流通の仕組みが変わったりインディーズの力も増すとかで、大手ワーナー傘下の名門レーベルだからといって信用できるという感じでもなくなってるけど、やはり "TROUT MASK REPLICA" や "PARIS 1919" を最初に輸入盤で入手した時の印象は強烈なものがあり、近年、ビージーズの全公式アルバムがリプリーズから再発されたのも手伝って、こうして代表曲を一堂に集めてみると、あらためて、いいレーベルだなあと–
