中産階級ハーレム③ ─ 水泳

敗戦に打ちひしがれていた国民に希望を与えたヒーロー「フジヤマのトビウオ」こと古橋広之進。1948年のロンドン五輪に参加を許されなかった日本であったが同じころ古橋は自由形長距離で次々と世界新記録を樹立、49（昭和24）年8月の全米選手権に招待されると橋爪四郎と共に世界記録で1、2位を占めた。しかし52年のヘルシンキ五輪では盛りを過ぎており無冠に終わる。

1928（昭和3）年のアムステルダム五輪、わが国に初の金メダルをもたらした陸上・三段跳の織田幹雄に続いたのは水泳・200ｍ平泳ぎの鶴田義行であった。↑写真は2位のラーデマッヘル（独、↑右）と。鶴田は32年のロサンジェルス五輪でも同種目を連覇、同五輪の水泳で男子6種目中5種目を制した日本は一躍水泳王国となる。

1936（昭和11）年のベルリン五輪でも勢いは止まらず、男子の800ｍリレーなど3種目に加え女子200ｍ平泳ぎでも前畑秀子がゲネンガー（独、↑左）との激戦を制した。

“水泳のメッカ”神宮プールで行われた日立明三大学対抗戦。古橋や橋爪（共に日大）の快泳を期待する観客で同プールは超満員に沸いた。

1956（昭和31）年のメルボルン五輪、古川勝が潜水泳法で男子200ｍ平泳ぎを制したが、その後潜水は禁止された。

昭和30年代のエース、自由形の山中毅。メルボルン五輪では400ｍ・1500ｍでローズ（オーストラリア、↑左）に次ぎ2位、1960年のローマ五輪でも400ｍ2位、1500ｍ4位と活躍。

1964（昭和39）年、地元開催で期待を集めた東京五輪、水泳は男子800ｍリレーの銅メダル1個に終わり、大学が強化の中心となっていた体制を見直そうとアメリカのような民間のスイミングクラブが各地に作られることに。

1966（昭和41）年のバンコク・アジア大会、自由形とリレーで4冠の木原美知子。高校1年で東京五輪代表に選ばれ、競技外でもモデル、タレントとしてや自身の愛称を冠したミミスイミングクラブを創立するなど活躍。

1972（昭和47）年のミュンヘン五輪、男子100ｍ平泳ぎで優勝した田口信教。女子でも100ｍバタフライを青木まゆみが制した。共に世界新記録。

モスクワ五輪には日本が不参加のため小学生で“幻の代表”となった女子平泳ぎの長崎宏子は1984（昭和59）年のロス五輪でも期待を集めたが200ｍ4位、100ｍ6位にとどまった。この大会では水泳の代表選手数名が選手村で大麻を吸っていた不祥事も発覚。　─（写真はすべて『激動の昭和スポーツ史18・スイミング』より）
