以下は2017年6月、その時点では25曲を選んだ年間チャート記事に記したもので、今回はチャートの改訂になります。

禍福はあざなえる繩の如しというが、悪いことは続けざまに起りがち。1997年初め、2度目のストーカー騒動が発覚、出向先から元のNTTの職場に戻された私。逆境に苛立ち、もがけばもがくほどますます浮き上がり、居場所がなくなる。不眠の症状が表れてしばらくの98年終り、父が自殺。母も正気を失い、逃げた私は薬物で自殺を図る。未遂となり五反田のNTT病院へ入院。母も入院したままで、私の自殺念慮はしばらく付きまとった。

翌99年3月いったん退院して復職するがやはり芳しくない。病気休暇から休職に切り替えて調布市の別の病院に入院する運びに。母は既に退院していたが不安定で、通院たまに短期入院などしていた。精神科では投薬と静養が中心で、家族がいる者はたまに外泊治療を行う。家で1泊か2泊して、退院へ向け慣らしてゆく。私の自活先は既に引き払われ、荷物はトランクルームへ。外泊は実家で母と2人。8月の外泊が最後だった。私の病状など、悲観した母は9月末に不帰の人となる。

主治医から告げられ、平服で顔面蒼白でフラフラと葬儀に出向いた私。これらのあいだ伯父夫婦をはじめ母方の親戚が奔走してくれたのだったが、葬儀の後に病院側にも強い味方が。ケースワーカーAさんである。親には家も貯金もあり、相続するのは私一人だ。Aさんはメタボ体型ながら経験豊富で行動力があり、それらにまつわる一切を法律事務所に取り次いで、実家を処分して新居を取得し、退院・復職とともにそこへ入居する段取りを親身になって整えてくれた。重荷は減ってゆき、人生の視界が少し開けた。

母が自ら犠牲となって、私が一人で生きられるようにしてくれたともいえよう。これ以下はない。もう助かる。仕事よりも家族よりも音楽だけ聞いていたいなんていう人間の生き死にはこんな感じだ。悪いことがまとまって起ってくれたことで、かえって助かったようなものだ。復職した会社は1年半ほどで辞めることになったものの、音楽生活に復帰するだけでなく、同時代にも追えていなかった広い範囲から集めた楽曲をiTunesで便利に管理し、毎週のチャートを再開させ、漫画家さんに呼びかけて同人誌を作って即売会に出るだなんて夢にも思わなかった。

入院先、音楽が好きな人は大きなCDラジカセを持ち込んでいたが、私は入院が長引いてしまいそうに感じて携帯CDプレーヤーで済ませていた。ボウイのHOURS...やスーパーグラスの同名アルバムは調布駅ビルの新星堂で買ったんだっけか。OUTSIDEやEARTHLINGはろくすっぽ聞かなかったので、貧弱な音楽生活ながらもボウイがひさびさに自分のそばへ帰ってきてくれたように感じたものだ—
