Nuclear power is the biggest burden for us. Perhaps no one believes any more that nuclear power, including civilian-used one, can bring sustainably our future something good except those who are completely off base.

Scientist and engineers might rather not understand the matters in the social system which incorporates nuclear energy. Ordinary people come to notice them. This is partly because the nuclear meltdown occurred at Chernobyl. And partly because everyone knows we are facing the nuclear waste problem and it isn’t easy to solve.

自分の役割としては、彼らの気持ちを代弁しながら、理性的な言葉にして体制側と渡り合えるような、こちら側の知性とか学問とかを築くことではないのか、そして、それこそがまた自分のアイデンティティを確立することではないのかと思ったわけです。それが最終的に、大学をやめる決心をした理由です。

I thought in that time that my role would be to create intelligence and science (in this context “wissenschaft” is more fitting) on our side, which could counter the existent system, with representing the emotions and voices of farmers and student activists, and changing them into more rational words. And I thought it was by doing so that my identity could be established. This is why I conclusively decided to quit the university.
