自然科学というのは、人間と自然のよりよい関係を求めるというところから生まれている。よりよく知って、よりよく付き合うというのが基本的な人間の欲求だった。それが、ある方向に特化してしまったところに問題があると思うのです。今こそ、科学者と市民のより直接的な結びつき―国家や大企業を媒介としない―が求められていると思う。

Natural sciences come from the human desire for the better relationship between human beings and nature. It was a basic human desire that is to establish the better interaction with nature by knowing it better. I think it is problematic for the science to have specialized only in certain realms. Now is, I think, the time to be required to have a direct link between scientists and citizens without being mediated by states and big businesses.
