この関心づけの転換にあたって、基本的に重要なのは、市民の役割です。私は、科学者と市民が、これまでのように国家組織や企業を媒介とするのではなく、直接結びつくようなことが、システム的に保証されるのが当面現実性のある道ではないかと思います。高木学校もその延長線上にあるひとつの試みですが、大学の研究室なども市民参加型で、テーマや研究プログラムを設定することも可能なのではないか。この点を21世紀に向けて多くの人が真剣に考えてほしい、と思います。

It is the role of citizens that is basically critical to this redirection of science technologies’ interest. I think it could be a present viable mechanism to guarantee as a system the direct networks between scientists and citizens without the traditional state and business mediation. TAKAGI’s school is also an effort which is an extension of the idea, but I guess laboratories in universities could set up their participatory research themes and projects. Hopefully a lot of people concentrate on the issue for the 21th century.
