さて、今日もパスポート申請のお話の続きです。
Okay, I want to share the story that I applied for May-chan's Japanese passport today again.
9月にめいを連れて日本に帰ると決め、まずは日本のパスポートを申請することに決めたHit-chan。
In the end of May when I decided to take May-chan to my home country, Japan, in September, I started getting things ready to apply for her Japanese passport.
シカゴ領事館の方がミネソタまで来てくれる出張サービスを利用しようと思い、その日時を調べたら、書類提出の期限まであと9日しかありませんでした。
At the point that I noticed that I had to get May-chan a passport, I only had 9days left to send an application and all the required documents to Japanese consulate in Chicago in order to receive the passport when they come and have one-day-only service in MN.
取り寄せるのに一番時間のかかるめいの戸籍謄本を日本の家族に至急送ってもらい、それを待っている間、その他の書類を準備しました。
It'd take the most time for me to get May-chan's family register rom Japan, so I asked my family in Japan to get and send it for me right away. Then, in the meantime, I worked on collecting other documents and filling an application.
申請書はオンラインで作成できるサービスがあるので、こちらのサイトで作りました。
There's an online service that you can fill an application, so I used it.
めいの出生届を提出する時に色々と記入の仕方で領事館の担当の方にお手数をかけたので、今回は提出期限ぎりぎりなのもあって間違いがないようにと結構注意しました。
I actually made a lot of mistakes when I filed May-chan's birth record and made the consulate staff take more time to go through the form. So, I paid extra attention to filling all the information on the application form this time.

パスポート申請書の記入例をネットで調べるとたくさんの情報が見つかるんですが、めいの場合、アメリカ在住で2重国籍だし、名前も日本名と英語名の2つあったりして、色々ややこしかったです。
You can find bunch of examples for Japanese passport application online, but I had to do extra research for May-chan since she's dual citizen of Japanese and the US and has 2 different official names too.
なので、今回申請書を記入していく上で気づいた疑問点とその答えをシェアしていきたいと思います。
So, I want to share the parts that I didn't how to fill in on the application and show how I ended up doing.
まず、表面のこの部分。
The first section that I didn't know hot to fill is here. It's kind of difficult to explain it in English, so let me skip the translation here.
現住所と日本国内の緊急連絡先の間に「居所」という部分があります。
住所：個人の活動の主たる拠点＝住民票の住所
居所：個人の生活の本拠ではないが、ある程度の期間継続して居住する場所

とあり、めいは日本に住民票はありませんがアメリカの我が家の住所が活動の拠点なので、「現住所欄」にはアメリカの住所、「居所」の部分は空欄にしました。
次に気になったのはこちら。
裏面の上部にある出発予定日などの欄です。
外務省のホームページの記入例では斜線が引いてあって記入をしないで良いという感じなんですが、オンラインの申請書作成サービスを使った場合、この部分を入力しないと次のステップに進めなかった（と思う）ので、めいの場合はどういう風に入力するのが正解なのかなぁと少し考えました。
Then, there's a section that you can fill your next trip in if you have one already scheduled.
で、結局私が入力したのは、「出発予定日」は未定。（オンラインサービスで申請書を作る場合、未定を選ぶことができます。）
I entered "Not scheduled yet" on the section for a date you leave.
そして、「※主要渡航先での滞在期間」の部分ですが、ここで少し混乱してしまいました。
Then, I was a little confused with the next section asking "The length of your stay in the main destination".
最初、日本への一時帰国を頭に浮かべ、「日本での滞在期間は3ヶ月未満やから、ここは3カ月未満にチェックを入れたら良いか～。」と思ったんですが、よく考えてみれば、めいは日本人でもあるので、日本人として見れば我が家があるアメリカが渡航先であり、そうすると滞在期間は3ヶ月以上になるんです。
In the section, you can mark either "Less then 3months" or "More than 3months" and first marked on "Less then 3months" since May-chan and I are going to stay in Japan for 7weeks on the next trip. Though, wait a second, when you count May-chan as a Japanese citizen, Japan is not a destination, but the US is.
めいはアメリカ人でもあり、アメリカに住んでいるので「アメリカに滞在している」という意識が薄かったんですが、日本人として見たらめいは現在アメリカに滞在していることになるんですねぇ。（何も言われなかったので、多分この解釈で合ってると思います。）
May-chan is a the US citizen and lives in the US too, so the fact didn't make me think, "She STAYS in the US." Though, you can tell that May-chan is staying in the US as a Japanese citizen too.
で、記入するのに一番頭を使ったのがこちら。
The next section is what I paid most attention to.
パスポートに表記される氏名の部分です。
The section to enter your name.
というのも、めいには2つの名前があります。
Why I cared the most about it? It's because May-chan has 2 different official names.
めいの日本名は「日本語の苗字（Hit-chanの旧姓）」＋「めい」
Her Japanese name is "My Japanese family name" + "MEI".
そして、めいの英語名は「英語の苗字」＋「英語のミドルネーム」＋「めい」
And her English name is "Our English family name" + "Her English middle name" + "MAY".
Hit-chan自身も日本名は変更していないのでパスポートには日本の苗字で表記されています。
I actually didn't change my family name in Japan when I got married to Andy, so my Japanese family name is still printed on my passport.
分かりやすいように例を使って、仮にめいの名前が、
Let me give you example names so that I can explain it better here.
日本名：鈴木 めい
Japanese name: SUZUKI MEI
英語名：MAY HANNA SMITH
English name" MAY HANNA SMITH
という場合、まず、どういう風にパスポートに表記してもらいたいかを考えます。
First off, you want to think how you want them to print your name on the passport.
日本のパスポートの場合、何も希望せずに申請すると、パスポートにはヘボン式ローマ字である「SUZUKI MEI」と表記されます。
For Japanese passport, the Japanese example name above is supposed to be printed "SUZUKI MEI" if you don't make any optional request.
ただ、これだと飛行機のチケットを取ったり、アメリカのパスポートの名前と見比べたりする時にややこしくなります。
Though, it's very confusing when you book a flight ticket or show an immigration gate both of your Japanese and the US passport with 2 different names.
というのも、めいの名前の英語での綴りはMAYですし、アメリカのパスポートには日本の苗字の表記は全くないので、この2つの名前が同一人物であるか分かりにくいんです。
As you already noticed this, but in Japanese Roma-ji spelling, May-chan's name is spelled "MEI", not "MAY". Besides that, on the Japanese passport, there's neither the American middle name nor the American family name on it, and it's pretty difficult for you to tell that those 2 passports with the different names belong to one person.
そこで希望できるのが、「非ヘボン式ローマ字での表記」と「別名併記」というものです。
Anyways, there are optional requests that you can make to avoid such an unnecessary confusion, which are "Printing your name as your English name spells" and "Printing your English name next to your Japanese name".
まず、「非ヘボン式ローマ字での表記」を希望すれば、本来めいの名前が「MEI」と記載されるところを「MAY」と表記してもらえる事ができます。
If you make a request to change your name spelling , you can change your name from the Japanese spelling to the English spelling. So, I could change May-chan's name from "MEI" to MAY'.
そして、「別名併記」というものを希望すれば、本来「MAY SUZUKI」だけが表記されるところ、めいの英語名にある「英語の苗字」と「英語のミドルネーム」をカッコ付で日本名の横に表記してもらう事ができます。（Hit-chanのパスポートにもこの方法で英語の苗字を記載してもらってます。）
Then, if you make a request to add a different name to your Japanese name, you can add your English name next to your Japanese name.
この2つの方法を利用した結果、めいの日本のパスポートには
After I made both of the requests, May-chan's name will be printed like "SUZUKI(SMITH) MAY(HANNA)".
「SUZUKI（SMITH) MAY（HANNA）」という風に表記されます。これで、アメリカのパスポートに表記される「MAY HANNA SMITH」という名前とも合致して、両方のパスポートを見比べた時にも混乱が少なくなります。
So, The name on her American passport, "MAY HANNA SMITH" can match the name on her Japanese passport, "SUZUKI (SMITH) MAY(HANNA)", and you can easily tell that both are the same person's passports.
ややこしいですよねぇ。
Super complicated, isn't it?
あとは、表面にもありますが、申請者署名の部分は、めいのように小さすぎて自分で署名できないなどの場合は親が代筆します。
（代筆の仕方も記入例によって色々な書き方がありましたが、誰が署名したか明記するのが大事なようです。）
Parents can sign their child's name in case the child's too young to sign by oneself.
最後にちょっとだけ気になったのがこちら。
Okay, I'll skip the next part too.
申請書類等提出委任申出書です。
今回、申請者であるめいのパスポートを母親であるHit-chanが代わりに書類を集めて申請しているので、一瞬こちらの記入が必要なのか？と考えてしまいましたが、「法定代理人が申請者に代わって提出する場合は、この様式の提出は不要」であると書かれていました。
ですが、どうも親であるHit-chanは法定代理人に当てはまるらしいので、こちらの部分の記入は不要でした。
という訳で、Hit-chanが上で説明したように記入して申請書を提出したところ、特に訂正の電話もかかって来なかったので大丈夫だったんだと思います。
Anyways, I filled an application like the way that I explained above and sent it to the consulate in Chicago. I was a little bit worried if they're going to call and tell me any mistake or so, but I didn't hear anything from them and thought that the application was accepted.
こんな感じで、申請書や写真、その他の必要書類を準備して、あとは日本から戸籍謄本が届くのを待つのみ。
Like this, I prepped all the documents and the application except for May-chan's family register, and all I needed to do was just waiting for the family register from Japan.
果たして締切期限までに届くのでしょうか？
Could I file the application by the deadline??
