アキレス腱断裂

1月16日(火)快晴

昨日ナイター・テニス中に右脚に痛みを感じて急に動けなくなりました。つま先立ちができないので、アキレス腱断裂は明らか。2－3ヶ月間運動はできません。だけど来月は冬の日本に行き、その後2週間のピースボート乗船で、運動なしの1ヶ月が控えているから、まあいいか。

While I was playing tennis last night I suddenly felt pain on my right leg and could not move at all. Since I could not stand on my right toe, obviously I could tell that I had gotten my Achilles tendon fractured and will not be able to exercise for the next 2-3 months. However, it shouldn't be a big problem because I know I will spend my next 1 month without any excercises anyway; my plan to go to Japan this coming winter next month and then to stay on Peace Boat for the following 2 weeks is right round the corner.

クイーンズランダーとは、熱帯の暑くて長い夏に対処するために工夫された伝統的な木造、高床式の家。住居部分はすべて2階で、1階部分は車庫、木工室、物置、パーティールーム、あるいは洗濯物を干すスペースとして利用。強い直射日光で洗濯物の色が変わるのを防ぐことができます。僕の住むヨーキーズ・ノブはサイクロンが来ると洪水で孤立するそうです。周辺の農家に高床式住宅が多いのは洪水対策もあるようです。

Queenslander is a woodwork traditional high deck house which is designed to cope with hot and long summer living in the tropical region. The whole rooms are on the 1st floor and ground floor is utilizes as the car space, the carpenter room, the storeroom, and the party room or clothesline space where we can prevent from the laundry changes the color with the strong direct sunshine. Yorkey’s Nob where I live becomes isolated because of the flood caused by the cylones. The countermeasures with the flood is one of the reason why there are so many high deck houses in theis farm area.

和食器と本とＣＤを沢山持っているので、ユニットの収納スペースに入り切りません。借家なので壁に釘は打てないし、家具を増やすのも厭。そこで食器棚と本棚に、可動式の仕切り棚を6個作ります。図面を引いて、ホームセンターで板を購入し、寸法通り切ってもらいます。あとは家で組み立てるだけ。電動工具があるので2時間の作業。板、木ねじ、ペンキ、刷毛などで15,000円の出費。ユミはもちろん大喜び。街に出かける時以外は、短パンとゴムぞうりの生活です。

As we have lots of Japanese dishes, books, and CDs, it’s difficult to store them in our new unit. It is the leased house, so we cannot nail up the wall ,also it’s unwilling to buy new cabinets. We decided to make 6 movable shelves for the cupboard and book case. Draw the blueprint, purchase boards at home center and order to cut them into the sizes. After that just assemble them at home. Using my electromotive tools it finished in 2 hours. The board, spike, paint and the brush etc, cost 15,000 Yen in total. Yumi was very satisfied with my work.

1月13日(土)快晴

3日前に半月湾ゴルフ場に初デビュー。18ホール3時間で＄２。その後プールで1000ｍ遊泳30分、テニス1ゲーム1時間、ビーチで6ｋｍのジョギング30分と、1日合計5時間の運動は体育学校か海兵隊並みのハード・スケジュール。費用は合計で＄２。しかし日差しが強いので、皮膚癌予防の観点からは体に良いことではなさそうです。

The day before yesterday I debut on Half Moon Bay golf-course. I spend $2 to finish 18 holes in 3 hours. After that I swam 1000m in 30 minutes, played 1 tennis game for in 1 hour, and 6km jogging on the beach in 30 minutes. Totally I worked out for 5 hours just like the hard schedule in the physical education school or Marines. The total cost was $2. Because the sunshine is strong, it's not good for your body from the point of skin cancer prevention.

逃げた空蝉

海辺の森でセミが鳴いています。「♪空蝉の身をかえてける木の下に なほ人がらの懐かしきかな」光源氏は空蝉の寝室に侵入しますが、それを察した空蝉は寝巻きを残して逃げ出します。光源氏は生まれて初めて、自分の意のままにならない人間がいるということを知りました。ユミに逃げられないように、きれいな貝殻をプレゼントに拾って帰りました。

Cicadas are singing in the forest at the seashore. " ♪ empty cicada’s shell looks like a lingerie reminds me the impregnable lady" Hikaru Genji, Japanese Don Juan sneaked into the bedroom of Miss. Cicada but she ran away leaving her lingerie. He know for his first time that there was a lady who would refuse him. I picked up some pretty shells and brought them home for Yumi so she wouldn’t escape from me.

逃げた特殊潜航艇

1942年旧日本帝国海軍は特殊潜航艇3隻でシドニー湾を攻撃。2隻は爆沈されましたが、1隻は軍艦に魚雷攻撃を加えた後湾内から脱出し、行方不明になっていました。昨年12月にアマチュア・ダイバーが海底に沈むこの特殊潜航艇を65年ぶりに発見し、マスコミで大々的に報道されました。学校で現代史を教えない日本ではあまり話題にはならなかったかも。

In 1942 Imperial Japanese Navy attacked Sydney bay with 3 special submarines. 2 of them were sunk by explosion and 1 escaped from inner bay after adding torpedo attack to the warship. Since then it has been missing. In December last year, 65 years later from the war some amateur divers discovered this special submarine sinking on seabed, and it was reported extensively in the mass media. In Japan, on the other hand, few people discussed about it as we never teach modern history in school.

僕のアパートの目の前の砂金浜には夜明けと同時に朝顔が咲き乱れます。風紋の砂の中に茎やつるは埋もれて、花と葉だけが顔を覗かせています。今朝もジョギングの後おつゆの具のピピ貝を沢山採って、家に戻る途中で朝顔のつるに足をからませて転倒。ピピ貝は砂の上に無残に散乱し、一斉に砂に潜って逃げました。同情したアボリジニのおばさんが僕にピピを分けてくれました。そこで1句、「♪朝顔のつるにからまれもらいピピ」

morning glory

At the break of dawn the morning glories, growing at Gold Sand Beach in front of my apartment, become in their full bloom. Their stalks and the vines are buried in sand with patterns made by wind on it. Just the flowers and the leaves are shown on the sand’s surface. This morning I caught a lot of pipi shellfish after my regular jogging. Then my foot was caught by some of the vines and I stumbled on the way home. The pipi shellfish were scattered miserably on the sand and they quickly run away under sand. An aborigine elder lady gave me some of her pipis feeling sorry for me. Then I made 1 poem, “ ♪ Morning glory tackled me and ended up with pipi given”

ココ・ナッツにはココ・ネット

一口に椰子の木と言っても沢山の種類があります。僕のアパートの周囲を見渡しても10種類ほど確認できます。ほとんどの日本人が想像するのはココ・ナッツ。街路樹やビーチですらりと伸びた姿は優雅でも、落下する椰子の実は危険です。だから結実しないように花を切り落とすのが最良の方策。もう1つの方法は青果業者に委託してココ・ネットの装着。熟した椰子の実は自動的に漏斗状の筒に集積。青果業者は定期的に集果して回ります。

You cannnot simply put palm trees in a single caterogy. There are so many kinds of them. Looking around my apartment, you can varify about 10 types of palm trees. Most Japanese imagine coconuts when talking about palm trees. They are actually dangerous when coco nuts fall down. Therefore in order not to bear fruit, cutting down the flower is best way. Another way is to make coconut trader put coconet on the trunk of palm tree. Matured coconuts fall down to the net and accumulated to the tube of funnel automatically. The coconut trader turns to collect them periodically .

南国の夜

ケアンズは南緯17度。今日の最高気温は32℃、最低気温は24℃の予想。日本では太陽は常に南にありますが、豪州では逆に北にあります。しかしケアンズでは今の時期は南から日が差します。夏でもかなり夜が長く、日の出は5：40am,日の入りは6：40ｐｍ。日中は椰子の葉を鳴らす海風が心地良く、冷房はあまり必要ありません。夜も美しく、快適です。

Cairns locats 17degree of the south latitude. Whether forecast says that Today's maximam temperature will be 32℃, and minimam 24℃. In Japan the sun always shines from south, in comparison, from north in Australia. In Cairns the sun shines from south in this season. The nights are quite long even in summer, as for sunrise at 5:40am and sunset 6:40pm. During daytime sea breeze that sounds the palm leaves is cool and pleasant, so we don't need air-conditioning . Also the night is beautiful and comfortable.

深夜のうちにサファイア・プリンセス号は出港したらしく、今朝は姿が見えません。ユミも残念そうに沖を眺めています。「もう2度とクルーズには行かない」と宣言しているユミですが、2－3年後には心変わりしそうです。僕は1年1回のペースで世界1周航海をしていますが、やはり1人より2人で乗るほうがいいですよね。

midnight departure of Miss Sapphire Princess

As we can't see it this morning Miss Sapphire Princess should have departed in midnight.
Yumi looked disappointed watching the open sea. “I will never go on a cruise again”, she declares, but I hope she change her mind in 2-3 years. I go on a cruise around the world evry year, however it's better to go to cruise with Yumi than by alone , isn't it?

今朝も早起きをして砂金浜にジョギングにいったら、沖合い300ｍに10万トン級の超巨大クルーズ船が停泊中。双眼鏡で見ると、それはサファイア・プリンセス号。
ネットで検索すると、バンコック→シドニー17日間の航海中。どんな事情があったのか、沖に投錨して数隻の救命艇で乗客をボートクラブにピストン輸送。3000人ものリッチな来客に1500人の田舎町は大賑わいです。

treasure ship of the Gold Sand Beach

As ususuall I got up early this morning and got to the Gold Sand Beach for jogging, when I found super enormous cruise ship of 100,000ton was unchering on the sea 300m distance from the beach. I returned home to bring a binoculars and I realised the ship was The Sapphire Princess. I checked on internet she is on the way from Bankok to Sydney for 17days. I don't know what happened in the ship, but they unchered in the open sea, and piston transported passengers by sevral lifeboats from the cruise ship to our Boat Club. 1500 populated countryside village became crowded with the 3000 rich guests.

僕が暮らすヨークの丘ではビーチは社交場。よほどの偏屈でない限り、住人はビーチに散歩に出かけます。すれ違うときには知らない者同士でも必ず挨拶をします。エスプラネードの芝生の中にオジギソウの小さな白い花が咲いています。手を触れるとネムのような葉を閉じます。日本のネムの木も夜には葉を閉じますよね。挨拶と早寝の習慣は大切です。

In our village, Yorkeys Knob, the beach is sociable place. Evry resident except very obstinate one goes to beach for a walk. When passing each other, we say hello even to the person who we do not know. There are small white flowers of bow grass in the lawn of esplanade. If you touch it, it close the leaf that like silk tree. Japanese silk tree also close its leaves in the night, doesn't it? It means greeting habit and going to bed early are important.

極楽鳥花は虫媒花でもなく風媒花でもなく、鳥媒花です。つまり虫や風が花粉を運ぶのではなくて、サン・バード(太陽鳥)が運ぶのです。この太陽鳥は軒下の風鈴や釣り鉢に平気で巣を作ります。隣家のフィルのテラスにも巣があったのですが、猫に取られて悔しがっています。1本の木に100個以上の巣を作っているのを時々見かけますが、太陽鳥は集合住宅が好きなようですね。

flowers in paradise and birds of the sun

Flowers of paradise is neither entomophilous nor anemophilous but ornithophilous ones. In other words insects or wind don't carry the pollen but the sun birds do. The sun birds often make their nest on the wind bells or hunging flower bowls under the eaves. A cupple of sun birds made its nest in the terrace of Phill's unit, but it is mortified by a cat robbed the nest. Occasionally you can see more than 100 sun bird nests on tree. It seems that they like apartment house.

「1富士、２鷹、３なすび」、日本人の初夢は高尚です。ＯＺは単純で現世享楽的なので、「ビーチでビールを飲みながらＢＢＱを楽しむ」のが夢の定番。ケアンズに引っ越して1ヵ月半。早朝ビーチを走り、1000ｍ泳いだ後、プールサイドでバード・ウオッチングをしながらの朝食。夕方まで読書と昼寝、夕暮れにビーチを散歩する毎日です。「南洋に住んで毎日バナナを3本食べたい」という子供の頃の夢がどうやら実現したようです。

B class new years first dream: beach, beer & beef/ banana, bird & book

“1)Mt Fuji, 2) a hork, 3) an egg plant" the dream in the first night of the year for Japanese is noble. OZ being simple and easy going, their dream is "enjoying BBQing drinking beer on the beach”1 and a half month passd since moving to Cairns. I jog on the beach early morning, swim 1000m, have breakfast watching birds at the poolside, read books, take a nap and walk on the beach in the evenings. That's my rutin here. My dream, “Living in Southwest Pacific, and eat 3 bananas every day" in my childhood seems to come true.

餅は嫌いなので正月の雑煮は食べませんが、年越しそばは欠かしません。ケアンズは日本人観光客が多いので、乾麺各種、そばつゆ、ワサビ、ネギ、刻み海苔はいつでも手に入ります。問題は水道水です。熱帯地方だけあって水道水が30℃くらいの微温湯なのです。乾麺の茹で時間をやや短くしないと荒熱が取れません。そして肝心のそばつゆが30℃では話にならないので、氷を浮かべたそばつゆです。

sauce dip on the rock

I don't eat New Year's Day rice soup, however, I never miss New Year's noodle. As there are always so many Japanese turist in Cairns, anytime we can easily get several kinds of dried noodle, dip sauce, horseradish, green onion, dried sea weed. But big problem is tap water. Cairns is tropical district, so tap water is the lukewarm water of about 30℃. Unless boiling time of the dry noodle is made a little short, we can't keep the noodle crispy. Dip souce in 30℃ is out of story, so you have floate ice cubes in it.
