徳島県日和佐町はウミガメが縁で1969年にケアンズと姉妹都市を締結しましたが、町村合併で美波町に。新生議会で姉妹都市の再批准が必要じゃないのかな？2006年に海のない栃木県小山市が二つ目の姉妹都市になりました。人口がともに13万人以外には共通点はありません。小山市長は市のホームページで、「国際化に備えて英語教育が必要だから・・・」と姉妹都市締結の必要性を述べています。おやまあ、だから何故ケアンズ？硬い話は結構、政治的思惑も不要、大切なのは文化交流です。願わくばシティーに美波寿司と小山餃子店を開業して欲しいもの。

Sister city, Hiwasa?

Hiwasa city in Tokushima prefecture become the sister city to Cairns in 1969 related to turtles but after that changed its name to Minami due to the consolidation of municipality. I think new-born Minami city assembly needs to ratify it again. In 2006 Oyama city in Totigi prefecture that is not faced to any sea became the second sister city to Cairns. The only common thing between those cities is their populations, 130,000. The mayor of Oyama city states, in the formal website of Oyama city, about the necessity of becoming the sister city. He says ”Our city needs more English education for internationalization…” Why Cairns then? I guess we need neither difficult reasons nor political speculation. The important thing is culture exchange. Hopefully, they will open the sushi bar Minami and the dumpling restaurant Oyama.
