"Sky"アイコンをクリックすることで、Google Earthで指定した特定の地点の星空の様子を観られる機能です。リリース以来もう2週間、時間を見つけては弄り倒してます。
GoogleとNASAとのストレージ技術提携が産み出したサービスの一つで、基本的に平面情報と貼付けられたアトリビュートの閲覧といったマッピング用途に絞られますが、何しろ情報量とレイヤが膨大なので、高価な天文辞書に匹敵する情報を空間的なインターフェースで直感的に操れる利便性は考えると、こんなとてつもない機能をフリーで提供できるGoogleに脱帽です。
4.2には他に、各飛行場、空港間のフライトシミュレータ機能も実装されています。まるで3Dシューティング・ゲームのような臨場感。そのうち衛星の気象情報をリアルタイムでマッピングした"Google Weather"みたいな機能もリリースされそう。PhotoOverlayにウェブカメラをリンクして、リアルタイム画像をマップに埋め込んでいる人も現れはじめたようです。

The world's largest digital camera has been installed on a new telescope designed to hunt for potentially dangerous asteroids.
The camera was installed on the PS1 telescope in Maui, Hawaii, US, the first of four telescopes being built as part of a project called the Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System (Pan-STARRS).
Pan-STARRS will make frequent scans of the sky, searching for asteroids that could pose an impact threat to Earth
14億画素のデジタルカメラが、マウイにあるPS1望遠鏡のPan-STARRSシステムに実装されました。2008年までに、地球近傍の小惑星の中から直径1km以上あるものの約90%を探査することが可能になる見通し。2010年を目処に、予定されているPan-STARRSを4機稼働させ、地球軌道に近づいた300m超の隕石の99%を特定することを目指しています。

かつて恐竜を滅ぼしたと考えられる隕石は、元は小惑星帯にあった直径170kmに及ぶ"Mother Rock"の、300個以上に砕け散った衝突片の一つであった可能性が明らかになりました。破片の一部は地球に衝突した後、金星にも墜ちたと考えられ、月のティコ・クレーターの起源であるかもしれないそうです。

Virgin Galacticがニューメキシコに建設予定のスペースポートの概観が構想されています。デザインチームはNew Mexico Spaceport Authority(NMSA)と共に『世界のどこにもないもの』をコンセプトに、 "low-lying, organic shape"をモチーフの指標にしているよう。米国最大手の工学デザイン企業、URS Corporationと、ロンドンを拠点に世界中で活動する都市デザイン会社、Foster + Partnersが共同で担当しています。現状では2010年の開港予定。ミレニアム・ファルコンを連想させる形状ですね。。

In the mammalian visual system, spikes evoked by visual stimuli have millisecond-scale timing, even though the relevant time scales of visual processing themselves are much slower. In cat lateral geniculate nucleus, spike timing precision is not absolute for all classes of visual stimuli, but is relative to the time scale of the stimulus. Further, it is demonstrated that this relatively high level of precision is required to construct an accurate representation of the stimulus.
