先日、モスクワで行われたAndru Donaldsのライブで、Enigmaの楽曲が幾つか披露されたそうです。Enigma自体はLiveをしたことがないので、本家のヴォーカリストであるAndruがそれをしたということは、Enigmaファンにとっても貴重な機会と言えそう。

特に原曲の"Out From The Deep"はCretuのヴォーカルで、もともとAndruの持ち歌ではないので新鮮です。


その他にも、Michael Cretuがプロデュースしたソロ・アルバムから数曲セレクトされていますね。

Linking Earth and Climate Science: Semantic Search Supporting Investigation of Climate Change

In this paper, we focus on the data in Earth and Climate Sciences and on the use of ontologies to facilitate search and integration of this data. Mercury, developed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, is a tool for distributed metadata harvesting, search and retrieval. Mercury currently provides uniform access to more than 100,000 metadata records; 30,000 scientists use it each month.

We augmented search in Mercury with ontologies, such as the ontologies in the Semantic Web for Earth and Environmental Terminology (SWEET) collection. We use BioPortal, developed at Stanford University, as an infrastructure to store and access ontologies. We use BioPortal REST services to enable faceted search based on the structure of the ontologies, and to improve the accuracy of user queries.

Here, we show that one-stage models cannot explain psychophysical experiments on feature fusion, where two visual stimuli are presented in rapid succession. Paradoxically, the second stimulus biases decisions more strongly than the first one, contrary to predictions of one-stage models and intuition. We present a two-stage model where sensory information is integrated and buffered before it is fed into a drift diffusion process. The model is tested in a series of psychophysical experiments and explains both accuracy and reaction time distributions.

On Oxford Nanopore’s ‘disruptive’technology
Given the promise of nanopore sequencing,and the relatively teasing nature of ONT’s press release,there has been much speculation on the interwebs about the nature of their device,its costs,performance parameters etc. The most comprehensive discussion on this topic is at Dr. Keith Robison’s blog (highly recommended read). While I agree with much of his conjectures,his post is looking at the device mainly from the point of view of genomics applications. 先陣はOxford Nanoporeだったけど、NABsysのSolid-State(6塩基単位の配列プログラム)とNoblegenのOptipore SequencingにminION並みの隠し球があるかというと容易じゃないと思う。GridIONのアドバンテージは大きかった。

Illumina株も一時的に下落してるけど、Oxford nanoporeの戦略提携企業でナノポア事業の利益共有社だからね。NABsys社が何をコメントしたのか気になる。EMBLはNABsysのSolid-State推しだった気がする

そういえばNASAが昨年、Vomit Cometで無重力下のPCR駆動テストやってたが、minIONは仕様上、宇宙旅行中の過酷な環境に耐えうるんだろうか。

しっかし、順調に大本命がIon ProtonとMinIon/GridIonに変わったなぁ。次々とでてくる新型シーケンサーがあっさり旧型に取って代わるあたりが戦国時代だ。まぁMinIon/GridIonに関してはデータ見てみるまでなんともだけれど。
例えば、今結構安めのところで、グライナーのシーケンシングサービスが、36runで6万円。http://bit.ly/xUaiv7 MinIonは今のドル円レートだと、$900=約7万2千円で、1kbpが100runできる計算になる。しかもそれぞれx512。エラーとかありえない。

私は奨学金返済に苦労したタチなので、あまり楽観視出来ない。とは言っても、もともと奨学の成果として返す見込みで契約を結んだ奨学金が返済できない、負荷が著しいというのは、制度上の欠陥という他ない。


地味に怖いのが低金利という謳い文句で目立たない『延滞金』という取り決め。何らかの理由で返済が滞った場合、これと利息のWで年13%ずつ元金から増えていくことになる。今の時代、国立で200万借りて就職したとして、直後に生活に逼迫したりすることも珍しくない。また保証人や家庭の状況で再猶予が認められるとは限らず「銀行ローンや消費者金融より良心的」と世間から褒め称される制度の陰で奨学金という性格から元本が巨額なことを無視され社会的弱者に転落する図式。

「借りたものは返す」は当然なこと。日本学生支援機構の案内にも『当然返還すべき金額に加えて延滞金を支払っていただくことになります。』(原文ママ)とある。そういう契約を交わした以上、そうなるということ。支援機構の掲げる大義名分とは全く無関係に。


どちらにせよ滞納者が20万人超いて、民間の取り立て業者に債権譲渡せざるえなくなったという時点で制度の破綻を認めるべきなんだろうけどね。今奨学金返済で悩んでる人、経済事情は「個別のトランザクション」だから、「私は○○だけど△△して払ったぞ」という全く無価値な議論は取り合う必要ない。それと日本は一度、大学と奨学金制度の関係の中の搾取構造は洗うべき。奨学金の恩恵を得る人が大勢いて、当然の如く借りたら良いという圧の存在。


誰でも大学に進学出来る「豊かさ」。当然のように大卒資格を要求する社会。当然のように金を貸し付ける奨学金機構。豊かさを担保されたかのように借り受ける若者。数十万人が滞納者。それが日本の豊かさの実像。

For me, the risk of commercial enclosure is so much smaller than the risk of not building the right networks, or of creating fragmented incompatible networks, of ultimately not being able to solve the crises we face today in time to do any good, that the course of action is clear. Legal tools are useful to assure users of interoperability and their rights, otherwise they just become a source of friction. Social tools are a more viable route for encouraging desirable behavior.

Illumina側のコメントは『株主は我々が独立した会社であることを望んでいる』として、買収提案には応じない姿勢を強調しているけれど、具体的な対抗策は講じてあるのかな?実際に現場や業界そのものに、今回のロシュの行動への風当たりが強く窺えるのも事実なので、それを受けての強気かも。

Data treatment effected the estimation of community richness over a 6-year period, whereby 8794 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were identified using single-linkage preclustering and 21?130 OTUs were identified by denoising the data.


The results suggested that seasonal changes in environmental variables are more important than trophic interactions. Interestingly, microbial association network analysis showed that correlations in abundance were stronger within bacterial taxa rather than between bacteria and eukaryotes, or between bacteria and environmental variables.

RNA editing is a post-transcriptional event that recodes hereditary information. Here we describe a comprehensive profile of the RNA editome of a male Han Chinese individual based on analysis of ~767 million sequencing reads from poly(A)+, poly(A)- and small RNA samples. We developed a computational pipeline that carefully controls for false positives while calling RNA editing events from genome and whole-transcriptome data of the same individual.


We found 44 editing sites in microRNAs (miRNAs), suggesting a potential link between RNA editing and miRNA-mediated regulation. Our approach facilitates large-scale studies to profile and compare editomes across a wide range of samples.

□ 私は刹那主義なのかもしれないけど、こと色恋に関しては、誰かを、その人物のステータスや「持てるもの」で値踏みをしたことは、ただの一度たりとて無い。惹かれた理由や魅力的な要素は幾らでも後付けできるけど、本当のところ理屈じゃなくて、「気付いたら好きだった」し、否定するにも理屈は通らない

(※ とは言っても、私自身は値踏みされるのは嫌な気はしない。寧ろしてくださいって勢い。)

人が価値観を行使して生きる世の中は、この宇宙にだって、人間の価値の尺度を担保する確かなものなんて、ただの一つも無いんだよ。その茫漠の中で奇跡的に出会えた唯一確かな感情を、そんな不確かな価値なんかとトレードオフするなんて勿体ない。愛はそれ自体で豊穣だけど、豊かさは愛を保障しないよ


でも、価値の尺度の定向性は感情を基盤にしているから、愛と量的価値のトレードは一応成り立つものではあると考える。可塑性を認めるかどうかという問題。


もっと踏み込むと、遺伝子を遺すために優勢な価値を選択するというのは、愛を喚起する本能の仕業ではあるが、だからといって本能それ自体は愛ではない。生命現象の体系上の機構としては愛と本能が一致する解釈が成り立つが、人間の定量的な主観の不完全性に立つと、愛とは本能を欺いて居座る何かである




□ 20歳にとって40歳はダブルスコアだけど、10年、20年経って、お互いの年齢は寿命という尺度に置いて少しずつ近づいていく。ゆえに、人間は経験量によって誰かより賢明になれるというのは全くの幻想であり、その程度は予め限界をアサインされている。




□ 組織体制に弊害があると分かっていても、型枠である組織構造そのものに意思決定が反映されないシステムって、それだけで自己撞着だよね。組織主導で論理性のもとにコンセンサスを導く場面で、組織の任期や体制そのものに根拠がないとか、政治のオープンフレームワーク化との歪みが必ず深刻化してくる。
