ブルガリアの作曲家であり、画家としての顔も持つアーティスト、Ivan Shopovのキャリアの集大成とも言えるアートブック。その世界観を、彼の絵画センスと二重性を兼ね持つ、音楽というフォーマットに結晶化したコンセプト・
アルバム。



COOHやBalkanskyとしての活動でも知られるIvan Shopov。Bulgariaを代表するIDM、dub-step、experimental electronicaの担い手としてのノウハウを動員し(時にバルカンの民族音楽のエッセンスを取り入れてきた)、アンビエントでありながら鋭いエッジを纏ったセンスは、アルバム終盤に覗くDrum 'n' Bass要素への回帰によって、漸うと露顕する。


モジュレートされたピアノやホーンをはじめ、無機質に響く実験的な電子音響さえ、その精微な筆致でインクをしつらえるように、アコースティック楽器のごとく奏でている。あたかもスペクトル楽派のそれにも似た響きは、そのアモルファスな音韻の中、シミュルタネイスムにも通じる概念上の構成をも匂わせるが、もっと感性的で、静謐と呼べるまでに均衡を保っている。



どこかAphex TwinのAmbient Worksを彷彿とさせる狂気じみた音色のあしらい。一つ一つの楽曲は短い時間に区切られているものの、その豊穣なバラエティは、隔絶された次元の中で、分裂的なまでに異方化した観念の描く世界の仮象であり、何処か咽び泣くようなアトモスフィアの重層は、音の客体たるオブジェクトとの位相関係を構築し、くぐもったリズムの顕形は、理を敲く捩じれた慣性現象すらトレースする。



HauntingかつSci-Fiな音壁のレイヤーが摩擦する哭声の如き鳴動。あらゆる畏怖を縁取った無窮の空漠を滑り落ちていくかのように、この作品に横たわる虚無の深さは計り知れない。光に依って陰を刻むように、漆黒の蜷局を巻く音の淀みから湧きいでる静寂の歪みは途方も無く、その波打つ表層に、虞れと恍惚という名のアンビバレントを従えている。

Researchers at the University of California have created the first three-dimensional map of the human genome. The team at USC describes the genomic DNA strand as being ‘so long that if a nucleus were the size of a soccer ball, the strand of DNA inside it could be unraveled to stretch more than 30 miles long


Inside the nucleus, DNA forms hundreds of millions of contacts with itself. What is swiftly becoming clear is how useless nostalgia is in getting a grip on our own sense of time, not least because it leaves us with alienated figments of time, emptied of historicity. The Revenant Diary, confronting us with unremembered fragments of Van Hoen’s self, confounds all of that.  -Dan Barrow



印象派電子音楽のカルト的コンポーザー、Mark Van Hoen。彼が十代の頃から1980年代にかけて、4-tack tapeにより録音した楽曲素材を、自ら再構成・リマスタリング。テクノフィールドの知られざるマイルストーンとするに相応しいアルバム。


『掘り起こされた日記』

イギリス内陸の奥深くに位置する炭鉱都市スメスウィック。多くのジャマイカ・インド系移民を受け入れる街のエスニカルな喧噪と、鉱業街の刻む金属的なリズムに囲まれて少年期を過ごしたMark Van Hoen。そのデジタルな作曲技法の中には、彼にとってのノスタルジアの表徴とも取れる様々な『異質』への憧憬が響き渡っている。


"The Revenant Diary"は、名が体を顕すが如く、Mark Van Hoenが過去に『遺失』してきた記憶と感情を呼び覚まし、取り残された時間の中で離散しながら、かつて剥がれ落ちた刹那の結晶を紡いで、現在の自己のアイデンティティと、自らが陰ながら開拓の一線を担って来た、電子音響テクノロジーの新たな筆致により生まれ変わったメモラビリアである。



凡そTechnoミュージックの文脈では、Mark Van Hoenの存在感と影響力について、それほど大きくは周知されてはこなかった。しかし現在のIDMに通じ、伝説として語られるSeefeelとしての実験的な音楽活動の数々や、Apolloレーベルからのアンビエント界における90年代の遺産とも言える聴講に値するインパクトの数々を刻みながら、近年の寡作ぶりに、彼自身が90年代における「失われた異才」としてカルト的な求心力を蓄え続けていたこともまた事実であった。




彼の作品の特徴として、確かにそれが決して『テクノ』というジャンルに対して何か前衛的なアイデアを提供したと評価するには少し弱い節さえあると言える。(実際はAutechre等からのリスペクトは受けているものの)それは何故かというと、ホーエンの作曲プロセスは、どちらかというとシュトックハウゼンに始まる、今や『古典』となったアカデミックな電子音楽の系譜を踏襲しているように聴こえるからとも考えられる。


しかし、そのような実験音響で奏でられる音楽が、ただ無機質な響きに結集するわけでなく、何処か交響的な叙情性といったものが、ときおり重厚でシンセティックなレイヤーに覗かれることがあって、その正体こそが、彼の世界観に大きく影響を与えているという、アンドレイ・タルコフスキーの映像詩にも通じる鋭く冷艶な精神世界の反映なのかもしれない。


今思えば、Locust名義の忘れ難いポップ・アルバム"Morning Light"において、2000年代初頭におけるAvant-popの予兆を汲み取っていたのは、その背景に流れるバランスを度外視したポップ・テクノ市場のフォーマットを外れる非対称性の美学が、彼の中で既に結実し、時代を覆う灰色の不安感に共鳴するかのように発露したことの顕われでもあるだろう。




先述の通り、"The Revenant Diary"の楽曲素材の多くは、そんな彼が青春期に録りためていた世界観の欠片を繋ぎ合わせ、円熟を遂げた自身のセンスと当世的なアレンジによって、過去の亡霊と未来の預言の二層性を以て構築されている。


80年代の薫りを漂わせるヴィンテージな音色に、最先端のライブラリからアドオンされたエッジの効いたビートが重なり、アトモスフィアの描く粒状の輪郭の「ひずみ」に覗く断裂の彼方に、かつて時間とともに取り残され、喪失したはずの幻影=旋律が姿を現す。

そのメロディは歌われるように饒舌ではなく、打ち捨てられ破片と化した記憶の汚泥の底、こびりついた原体験にも似た偏執性と単純さを併せ持ち、未だ律動する廃墟の如く息を吹き返し、聴く者の郷愁と畏れを呼び覚ます。



一曲一曲を構成する音楽的要素はミニマリスティックでありながら、何処かでシンメトリーが壊れていて、その非連続なレイヤーが響もすディゾナンスが、幼少期より降り積もった記憶の破片の中から選択された、思いも依らぬシーンと符合して、私たち自身の想い出から築かれた意味論の『鏡』によって可聴化された迷宮へといざない、幻惑する。


それは実験的な電子音響の無機質な音色だけでは決して実現しえず、Mark Van Hoenの表現世界の底流に流れるノスタルジアが、その奏でる韻律が、過ぎていく時間とともに埋もれていく人々の、もはや顧みられることのない『想い』に、普遍の光を照り返しているからに違いないのだ。

□ 生命機構とエネルギー効率の問題について

「生命システム」という定義に係る問題だけれど、そもそも生命は、システムを指向せずしてシステムに「ならざるを得ない」。アルゴリズムは即ちダイナミクスである。遺伝子創出プロセスはエネルギーの過渡状態で、そのトポロジカルともフラクタルともいえるエネルギー準位や形状の決定が可干渉かどうか

(承前)3. バランス的に、多くの機構は単純でエネルギー効率が良く処理されていて、ロングテールとして複雑な機構が他数ある。エネルギー使用や効率がスケールフリー分布か対数正規分布に乗るなら(僕は乗りそうな直感がある)、3である可能性が結構あって、まさにこれが僕の今の不安に直結する。
結局ね、そういう『複雑』な細胞内制御の新機構を報告する論文って、それがあたかもセントラルドグマを覆す重大な作用機構で、普遍的かつ網羅的に効いている、という論調のものが多いんだけど、それが気にくわないんだと思う。それはハブなのか、ロングテールなのか。
生命システムには、要素(広義の遺伝子)、要素間相互作用、要素のパラメータがあり、選択圧はそれぞれにかかるが、生物にとっての変化コストは要素>相互作用>パラメータだが、おそらく変化によって系に与えうる影響もこの逆なので、どこまでがパラメータやリワイヤリングで対応しうるのか、が課題。

Here, we present a measure of dependence for two-variable relationships: the maximal information coefficient (MIC). MIC captures a wide range of associations both functional and not, and for functional relationships provides a score that roughly equals the coefficient of determination (R2) of the data relative to the regression function.

MIC belongs to a larger class of maximal information-based nonparametric exploration (MINE) statistics for identifying and classifying relationships. We apply MIC and MINE to data sets in global health, gene expression, major-league baseball, and the human gut microbiota and identify known and novel relationships.

First, analysis of how phenotypes are inherited in crosses used to be the most powerful tool for understanding how organisms work. Even if students weren't going to go on to do this analysis themselves, as biologists they needed to understand how it was done. And following in the footsteps of the great geneticists was thought to be the best way to learn it. Second, genetic analysis is hard, and learning to do it trains the mind in rigorous thinking. Genetics students' experience at solving complex genetic problems was expected to make them better at solving all kinds of problems, in everyday life as well as academia.

Long-sought particle not conclusively detected yet, but researchers may have found its hiding place.
Giannoti reported that her team's data suggests that the most likely mass region for the Higgs lies between about 116-130 gigaelectron volts, or GeV, which corresponds very roughly to 116-130 times the mass of the hydrogen atom.

She reported an excess of collision events at around 126 GeV, but could not conclusively declare a discovery. Guido Tonelli, spokesperson for the CMS experiment, also reported what he called "intriguing, tantalizing hints" of the particle. His team reported a most likely mass range for the Higgs at between 115-127 GeV, with their results most compatible with a mass of 124 GeV. Both teams do not have enough statistics to declare a discovery.

Together, these two groups have independently found intriguing collision events between 124 and 126 GeV, suggesting that the Higgs may have been produced at the LHC.

しかしギリギリな領域だったHiggs。114GeV/c^2以下はLEP実験で既に除外されているし、2年前はフェルミラボのテバトロン実験で160未満だとされていた。LHCはもともとlower massを想定して設計されていないから、悲観的な予測が蔓延していたんだよね。会見終わりでも結構懐疑的な質問があったけれど"Higher consistancy"で乗り切った。

「(ヒッグス粒子を覗く為の)窓は狭く狭くなりつつある」っていう表現があったけれど、もう検出出来るチャンネルもほぼ目星をつけていて、予想通りだけど、2012年度予算はお願いしますよ的なパフォーマンス感も犇々。

These sequence-discrete populations represent a major foundation for beginning high-resolution investigations on how populations are organized, interact, and evolve within communities. We also attempt to reconcile these findings with those of previous studies that reported indiscrete species and a genetic continuum within bacterial taxa and discuss the implications for the current bacterial species definition.

Linked Dataのようなデータ運用技術が、国家・民族間の紛争を解決するのに必要なのではないかと昔から考えている。どの組織が問題で、誰が味方で、潜在するリスクと、その時間的推移や定量的評価までマッピング。資金やバジェットのトラフィックも可視化など、相互不信の払拭に特化するツールを開発する。

注意すべきは情報を掲示するだけの「ソース」になってはいけないということ。「市民が運用する」常時オープンで可視化され、そのデータの流入量や変質を見渡せるリテラシーのフレームワークを確立する(或はその部分をシステム側に担保出来るのが理想)。アジテートや不正操作を判別する自律した機械学習機能も実装していなければならない。


最終的には、国・政府・産業というものの機能や意思決定の一部、または数割をOpen Governmentの域を超えて、民間の取り組みや連携が代替していくことも視野に入れていかなければならない。縦割りの日本社会ですら、トップダウン型の体制では対処出来る問題があまりにも広域・細分化し機能不全。

Metadynamics employing the three-dimensional embeddings as collective variables was applied to explore all relevant conformations of the studied system and to calculate its conformational free energy surface.

There were a remarkable amount of talks on connecting SMW with the rest of the Semantic Web, through RDF, SPARQL etc. Cool, SMW is seemingly becoming a natural choice of platform for SemWeb publishing!

The proportion of bio-people were also a bit remarkable. Apart from SNPedia founder Mike Cariaso, there were a whole bunch of others, including Salvadore from the GeneWiki project, Toni .... (and me) .... I guess it reflects how good SMW handles the need to give structure to very heterogenous datasets, so typical for the Life Sciences.

遺伝子決定論に限界があることは、臨床でも(一卵性双生児での遺伝学的病変の転帰が同一ではないことから)、また実験においても(同質の環境下であっても、変異によって同系動物間にさまざまな影響が生じることから)、ずっと以前から明らかだった。そうだとしても、個体の表現型は予測可能かもしれないと考えたB Lehnerたちは、発生中の動物で変異の帰結を直接予測する方法を考案した。

非侵襲的な、蛍光を用いる方法によって、線虫(Caenorhabditis elegans)の胚発生過程での遺伝子発現のゆらぎを監視し、各胚の分子ノイズとその胚に対応する成体の表現型を後ろ向きに比較したのである。そして、密接に関係する遺伝子間に生じる調節補償作用と、シャペロンなどの一般的な調節因子がかかわる調節補償作用が明らかになった。こうした補償の強さによって、動物ごとの成体表現型が予測される。

BioLOD.org (Biological Linked Open Data) databases provide biological open data, according to the W3C LOD standard format of the World Wide Web Consortium Linking Open Data project, not only similar to the DBpedia and Bio2RDF projects, but also including ontology capabilities such as with Web Ontology Language (OWL) and Open Biomedical Ontology (OBO).

BioLOD.org databases integrate 756 tables and 8.24 million rows of biological data as of November 2011. These data are identified by URI references in the form of:

Through a new grant funding opportunity, NHLBI will provide up to $1.5 million per year for researchers who sift through the data generated by the Grand Opportunities Exome Sequencing Project (GO ESP).

The GO ESP effort sequenced 7,500 samples from well-phenotyped populations to discover all the variations in exons and to provide the largest exome dataset for studying heart, lung, and blood diseases. Genotype data and detailed sequencing and phenotype data from the project also is being made available, and NHBLI plans to fund genomic investigators, statisticians, and biologists who will identify rare or lower frequency variants from these sets that may be related to diseases.
