Alice is a 1988 Czechoslovak film directed by Jan Švankmajer. Its original Czech title is Něco z Alenky, which means "Something from Alice". It is a free adaptation of Lewis Carroll's first Alice book, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, about a girl who follows a white rabbit into a bizarre fantasy land. Alice is played by Kristýna Kohoutová. The film combines live action with stop motion animation, and is distinguished by its dark and uncompromising production design.

オリジナル新作、"Surviving Life"が公開されたばかりの、チェコのオブジェクト・アニメーションの巨匠、ヤン・シュヴァンクマイエル。彼の初の処女長編作である『アリス』のHDリマスター/チェコ語完全版が、遂に日本でもリリースされた。

当ブログでは、シュヴァンクマイエルの一連の作品について、過去に多くのログを費やし書き連ねて来た経緯があり、今回のリリースに際して紋切り型の批評や感想を述べるつもりはなく、非常に偏った内容となることを前置きしたい。



とりあえずは画質。『チェコに現存していたフィルムをHDでテレシネ化し、傷や汚れを修復。音声はオリジナルのチェコ語版をしゅうろくした』とあり、壁の染みやティーカップの茶渋にいたるまで、シュヴァンクマイエル独特の退廃感と、時代をかいくぐり少し寂れたチェコの空気感というものが、その埃に噎せ返るほどの臨場感で画面上に再現されている。



シュヴァンクマイエルは、人間誰しもが通過する幼年期に体験した身体・発話感覚や生理的欲求、さらには『夢』や『妄想』といった行為も含んだ記憶のアーカイブを、成長とともに「行き過ぎた」ものではなく、大人になって尚アクセスが可能な地層として位置づけ、『アリス』という普遍的な物語に、社会性を築く人間存在の根本的な行動原理と快楽原則のルーツである幼年時代にトレースすることで、その重要な価値に「慎ましやかに」気付きを促している。



日常とは何者かの主観において常に迷宮であり、複雑性のダイナミクスの中に粗視化された宇宙を、局在的なフレームで切り取った、自己完結の反復と、相転移への漸近の絶えざる繰り返しである。


子供は自身の認知する世界に不思議を抱きながらも、その仕組みについて「知っている要素」だけで構築せざるを得ない。だけどそれは、認知の対象となる事象が複雑化しただけの大人も同様なのだ。


『アリス』の冒頭のシークエンスでは、劇中に登場するオブジェクトやキャラクターの要素が、彼女の生活圏に既に「配置済み」であることを、その全体像にあからさまに描写し、彼女の宇宙における『ヘッダ』部分を暗に提示する。

これは『FAUST』などの他のシュヴァンクマイエル作品についても、空想世界における事象や舞台装置の、日常道具への置換や陳腐化といった手法に現れている。



開示されない扉、腐敗物や壊れた玩具、這い回る虫たち。こうした生への煩わしさの象徴は、人間にとって価値を生じるものがエントロピー増大に遡行する現象であることを示唆し、アリスは『物語』という結晶化した平衡世界に逃避する。そして我々には、彼女がアリス自身であるのかどうかさえ、知る術が与えられていないのだ。



『誰の首をはねる？』

シュヴァンクマイエルのフィルミングとストーリーテリング双方に通底する概念、対象となるテーマに『不正操作』というものがある。それは事象の一瞬一瞬を紡ぎだすアニメ技法であり、操り人形を縛り付けるアルゴリズムであり、システマティックに突き動かされる人間と社会の動的平衡と、そこに働く不条理な力学である。


日常を構成する時間連結や物象のスケール、その関係性とロジックの歪みに介入する無邪気なノイズ、あるいは悪意といったものに、記号の恣意性が符号して物語を紡ぎだす瞬間。幼年期の世界観におけるパースペクティブの二重性には、「大と小」、「実体と擬態」という認知科学的原理原則の他に、「自身と他者」、「生と死」、「罪と裁き」といった社会性の礎となる対比構造が刻まれていく。



故に成長は純然たる観測結果を齎さない。自身と外界の変化と揺らぎにおいて、客観は常にアップデートされ、個が知りうる情報の対称性は、恒常的に欠損を生じる。人は情報そのものを統合していく存在たりえない。情報を希求することで訪れる状態変化への欲求が、そのニ腕を憧れへと伸ばし、両の足を混沌の汚泥に立脚させているのだ。



アリスが戯れる、あるいは妄想において『犯されている』、死と腐敗臭の漂う異形の『行き過ぎた者たち』との交錯は、彼らの出自とは無関係に、彼女の深層心理と属する世界を記述し、説明しうる材料として不十分な根拠を提供する。彼女の振る舞いを見る我々もまた、彼女を取り巻く宇宙の迷宮性に取り込まれ、或はスクリーンの背後にある鏡が自らを投影していることに思い至るかもしれない。


そこは完全にアンコントローラブルな世界ではない。アリスが妄想の中で気まぐれに事象を書き換える迷宮は、脚本に沿って決定論的に進行するフィルムとの重ね合わせであり、その未知の変数たる予定調和の襞に蠢く不条理なカオスが、覗き込むごとに観測者を惑わし、また自らのテクストに干渉を強いることによって、相互に知られざる物への『変身（量子的デコヒーレンス）』を迫るのだ。





・注記
こういった私自身の極端な偏見に基づいた分析や感想は、もっぱら同時期に読んでいた自然科学分野の巨書『ゲーデル、エッシャー、バッハ - あるいは不思議の環（Gödel, Escher, Bach: an Eternal Golden Braid)』の影響に拠るところが大きいかもしれない。


同書でも『不思議の国のアリス』の登場人物が、白ウサギの手引きで『自己言及』という科学的・哲学的テーマについて認識を深めていくという内容で、裏を返せば、ルイス・キャロルの原作が文学・芸術のみならず、社会・科学思想において如何に大きな存在感を放っていて、シュルレアリストとしてのシュヴァンクマイエルの表現技法との共時性を持つかということの現れなのであろう。

イラン系移民のドイツ人女性シンガー、Cymin Samawatieを中心とするベルリンの4人編成によるジャズ・グループ。ECMからは、ルーミーの詩を引用した"As Ney"に続く二作目のアルバムで、今作は全て彼女自身のファルシ語作詞によって、ペルシャという故郷と異国への憧憬を重ねて漂わせる、ユニークかつ清廉なピアノ・トリオの響きを奏でている。



特に"Nemibinam"における中東の民族音楽的なドラムスとジャズ・ビートに息づく共時性が、ECMらしい静謐で煌めく光の粒子を散りばめたようなピアノとベースのモダンな空気感によって浮き彫りになる展開に、時代と地理的垣根を超えた音楽言語の普遍的価値に思いを至らせ感慨深い。


タイトルトラックの"Saburi"をはじめ、いくつかの楽曲はCymin自身のイランでの生活経験が反映されているといい、"Saburi"（忍耐）と"Shakibaai"（堪える）は、2009年、テヘランでの選挙抗議集団への、アフマディネジャドの治安部隊による鎮圧を目の当たりにして書かれたものだという。同曲は国内外のジャズやワールドミュージックが中心に集う、オスナブリュックでのモルゲンランド・フェスティバルにおいて披露された。



従来よりも更にインプロヴィゼーションに重きを置いたという"Saburi"の音色は、どこか肌寒いまでの寂寥感と荒涼とした旅愁、エスニシティを醸し出しているようで、だからこそ出会いの温情を希求しているような、そんな『呼び交し』とも言えるトーンに溢れているのが特徴だ。


それは"As Maa"における呪術的なパーカッションと、アカデミックな欧州的ジャズの実験精神との言わば必然の相同性の開示であり、ジャズの書法にとっては、その民族性を内包して自身のルーツを開示する再帰的な融合と言えなくもない。

対照的に、"Norma"の終盤に現れるアンビエント的な音響と、寂しげなCyminの歌唱の対比は、この20年来ニューエイジ音楽において顕著となっている、特に西洋的な価値観から民族性というものを扱う音楽的基軸のそれにかなり近い。



インド・ニューデリー出身のドラムス、Ketan Bhattiが掻き立てる想望も、Cyminのそれと大きく共鳴しているところがあるのかもしれない。それはECMカラーに染まったヨーロピアンなピアノ、ベースの抑制によって、寧ろその陰を際立たせている。


Cyminがドイツという地で生まれ育み、自らのルーツとエスニィティを音楽の内にコントロールしている所以、それが"Cyminology"という名の意味を体現しているのだ。

In our paper we find that this phenomenon of data becoming useless is indeed quite independent of the details of the underlying theory. We think of classical theory and quantum theory as examples of a wider class of probabilistic theories. In this way of thinking systems are treated as black boxes with inputs (choices of experimental settings) and outputs (measurement outcomes), and the theory specifies the joint statistics of these things. By formulating matters in this way one may create hypothetical and nearly arbitrary theories.

It is in this set of theories that we ask whether this data-becoming-useless version of the second law holds universally. We find that we have to add some additional restrictions on the set of theories to make the question well-defined, but given those restrictions, the answer is yes: it holds in all such theories.

An article in the Joyce Laboratory newsletter called it “The Immortal Molecule.” Dr. Joyce’s molecule is a form of RNA, or ribonucleic acid, which plays Robin to DNA’s Batman in Life As We Do Know It, assembling proteins in accordance with the blueprint encoded in DNA. Neither RNA nor DNA is alive by itself, any more than any other chemical, like bleach, or a protein. But in Dr. Joyce’s test tube, his specially engineered RNA molecule comes close, copying itself over and over, and evolving.

A DNA tool provides a high-resolution view of biodiversity and ecological processes.

Genetic barcodes are a sequence of a particular segment of DNA that has just the right amount of variability to identify what species it came from. When an unknown creature -- or part of a creature -- is found, its tissue can be barcoded. If the sequence matches another barcode in one of several international databases, the creature's identity is revealed.

Ecologists are starting to wire such detailed predator and prey linkages into ecosystem models to test how such resource partitioning might support the resilience of the reef, especially when faced with stressors such as climate change and recent increases of invasive species.

To see why, consider the following model. Take two log-linear plots, one for cost per unit of compute power (CPU cycles, disk space, RAM, what have you), and one for cost per unit of sequence ($$ per bp of DNA). Now suppose that sequence cost is decreasing faster than compute cost, so you have two nice, diverging linear lines when you plot these trends over time on a log-linear plot (see Figure 2).

It's also worth noting that de novo assembly (my current focus...) remains one of the biggest challenges. It requires gobs of the most expensive computational resource (RAM, which is not scaling as fast as disk and CPU), and there are no good solutions on the horizon for making it scale faster. Neither mRNAseq nor metagenomics are well-bounded problems (you always want more sequence!), and assembly will remain a critical approach for many people for many years. Moreover, cloud assembly approaches like Contrail are (sooner or later) doomed by the same logic as above.

しかしながら、実用上の関心が寄せられている多くの系においては、まだ理論によっても、実験によっても十分に明らかにされていない。Takahashiたちは、そのような系の1つである量子分子磁石の結晶について、量子情報が失われる原因となる主要なデコヒーレンス過程は定量的に予測可能で、実験により確かめられることを示している。
