トロピカルハウスに先鞭を打ったとは良く評価されるが、Ninja Tuneのレーベルカラーとしては20年前からある手法ではある。民族音楽風コーラスとEDMの調合法は、70年代プログレにまで遡ることが出来る。しかし昨今のトロピカル・ハウス隆盛の源流には、90年代ニューエイジの存在が確かにあると思わせてくれる。

Nashville’s Hammock follows up 2017’s critically-acclaimed Mysterium with Universalis, the second installment of a planned three-album series. While Mysterium took listeners down a horizontal path that explored themes of death and grief, Universalis begins a vertical, upward movement back toward the light.

At times, Universalis calls back to Hammock’s 2006 album Raising Your Voice… Trying to Stop an Echo, while also retaining Mysterium’s deep ambient, neoclassical style. The band also finds itself rediscovering some of its earliest influences, including Low and Red House Painters. With Universalis, Hammock invites listeners to lose themselves within its layers of sound, while also embracing the beauty in its raw openness and silence.

アトランタのIDMレジェンドであり、未だサウンド・デザイン、エクスペリメンタル・シーンの第一線を牽引し続けるリチャード・ディヴァインによる、6年ぶりとなるアーティスト・アルバム。2012年の"Risp"以来、独自に研鑽を重ねてきたEurorack Modular Systemを用いたパッチと作曲技法の集大成を結晶化、20年間Laptop上で作曲し続けてきたディヴァインにとって、初めてトラック全編がモジュラーによって演奏される作品となっている。


前作"Risp"における硬質で冷たい、複雑かつ脱構築的サウンドに比べ、寄り確率ベースのパッチシーケンシングに基づいた"Sort\Lave"は極めて有機的な構造を伴っており、まるで凝集した電子が歌声を紡ぐような、体温を感じさせるアトモスフィアを奏でている。また幾つかのトラックでは、より原義のインダストリアル・ミュージックの試みに近い、レトロな響きに独自の思想によって辿り着いている。

"Microscopium Recurse"はアンビエントとミュージック・コンクレートが焦点を結んだような、"今"だからこそ産まれ得たハイブリットなトラック。"Revsic"、"Astra"は、Devine自らが開拓し続ける最先端の音楽表現のエッジが、全く斬新なモジュラーパッチによって完全に再現されている。

after a break of 6 years, Atlanta based electronic musician, producer and sound designer Richard Devine returns with a new album ‘Sort\Lave’ on Venetian Snares‘ Timesig imprint. Recorded between 2016 and 2017 using Richard’s custom built Eurorack modular system and two Nord G2 Modular units, Sort\Lave features 12 tracks of intricate electronica that ranges from abrasive percussive experiments such as ‘Revsic‘ to ‘Astra’s dazzling juxtaposition of sounds and onto the radiant ambience of the album’s closer ‘Takara‘.

Preview: 'A Prussian Requiem' from Hubris: Choral Works by John Powell

The haunting, wordless keens of despair that overtake the oratorio’s heartbreaking final passage, “The Gift,” are set to its opening melody, time-stretched from march to dirge.

Taken altogether, “A Prussian Requiem” represents Powell’s explorations of European classical romanticism from “La Belle Époque” that the First World War brought to an end to the minimalism and atonalism of today – from Maurice Ravel to Philip Glass, Claude Debussy to John Adams. But it also represents his determination to find new, more accessible vocabularies for contemporary classical music.
