Although a complete physical theory of evolutionary biology is inconceivable, the universals of genome evolution might qualify as “laws of evolutionary genomics” in the same sense “law” is understood in modern physics.

In our paper we find that this phenomenon of data becoming useless is indeed quite independent of the details of the underlying theory. We think of classical theory and quantum theory as examples of a wider class of probabilistic theories. In this way of thinking systems are treated as black boxes with inputs (choices of experimental settings) and outputs (measurement outcomes), and the theory specifies the joint statistics of these things. By formulating matters in this way one may create hypothetical and nearly arbitrary theories.

It is in this set of theories that we ask whether this data-becoming-useless version of the second law holds universally. We find that we have to add some additional restrictions on the set of theories to make the question well-defined, but given those restrictions, the answer is yes: it holds in all such theories.

□ 量子力学におけるコペンハーゲン解釈と多世界解釈の差異は、確率支配下にある、あらゆる事象の可能性の決定論的分岐を、波動関数の収束の前に置くか、その後ろに置くかという問題でしかない。

そして、あらゆる可能性が試行される宇宙において、自身が「何故ここにいるのか」、事象が取り得ない『ルート』があるかどうかということ。これが「世界の形が何であるか」という宇宙幾何の扱う問題となる。


決定論(determinism)とは、いわば宇宙の相転移が、それぞれの事象の確率ごとに与えられる平行宇宙のパラメータに依存していることを示すものである。可能性の低い事柄は、ある世界では可能性の高い事柄として顕現する。或はどこかでリアリティを共有し、連結しているのかもしれない。




□ 主観というパースペクティブにおいて、無限遠にあるものは全ての中心へと収束していく。重力とは、それらに分け入っていく対象を包含して相互作用し、存在の影響を伝播する現象に他ならない。

The ultimate proof of our understanding of natural or technological systems is reflected in our ability to control them. Although control theory offers mathematical tools for steering engineered and natural systems towards a desired state, a framework to control complex self-organized systems is lacking.

Here we develop analytical tools to study the controllability of an arbitrary complex directed network, identifying the set of driver nodes with time-dependent control that can guide the system’s entire dynamics.

Results: The documents revealed the strategies planned and used by the industry to enhance effects of smoking on weight and appetite, mostly by chemical modifications of cigarettes contents. Appetite-suppressant molecules, such as tartaric acid and 2-acetylpyridine were added to some cigarettes.

日本では全く報道されていない気がする。酒石酸と2-アセチルピリジンを意図的に添加。タバコで「痩せる」イメージ戦略に。内部資料によると、1949-1999年の間に食欲抑制剤をタバコに無表記で添加しつづけたことが示されている。重要なのは、それを中止したという記録もなく、直近のデータが提出されたわけでもないとのこと。

日本のタバコ会社が同じことをしているとは断定できないけど、「禁煙したら食欲が出てしょうがない」なんて話は幾らでも聞くよね。

生物音響学： 動物の鳴き声のリズム解析と背景ノイズから生態系リスクを計測

To begin building a catalog of soundscapes, Pijanowski and his team recorded continuous audio for a year in seven different habitats around the Purdue campus, including an old growth forest, wetlands, stands of trees on campus, and agricultural fields.

They analyzed the recordings -- more than 35,000 in total -- to characterize the rhythms of the seven different natural soundscapes and determine how varying degrees of human development affected those rhythms. They found that as human impact on the landscape increased, the natural rhythms of sound created by wildlife were replaced by low and constant human-produced noise.

In addition to studying changes in biophony (sounds created by living things) and anthrophony (sounds created by human activities), soundscape ecology will also focus on the often overlooked category of the sounds created by non-living sources like weather, wind and water know as geophony.

人間の開発区域と天然のサウンドスケープ音源の背景ノイズとリズムの比較から、サンプル地域の生態系のHealth-Statusを研究しようという試み。
自然界の非生物音源や人工音などの外因性の変数を評価して解析するメソッドの確立も重要でしょうね。

収集した生態系サウンドスケープ音源から、それぞれの生物種特有の鳴き声を分離識別するプログラムも開発されているとのこと。Sensory Ecologyにとって、ようやく現実的にフィットネスな技術が整ってきたという感じ。

A project I created for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. It deals with the concept of Antisense therapy - in which scientist kill targeted strands of RNA that are responsible for the creation of the SOD1 protein. The animation was created before the script and voice over, so there is a bit of a disconnect between what's happening on the screen and what's being said. This is not a finished product. It was put on hold indefinately and never fully realized. The animation itself was shown during the Jerry Lewis 2010 telethon, which is broadcast nationally, during several of the research updates.

過剰適合（英: Overfitting）とは、統計学や機械学習において、訓練データに対して学習されているが、未知データに対しては適合できていない、汎化できていない状態を指す。汎化能力の不足に起因する。
その原因の一つとして、統計モデルへの適合の媒介変数が多すぎることに由来する。不合理で誤ったモデルは、入手可能なデータに比較して複雑すぎる場合、完全に適合することがある。過剰適合は一般にオッカムの剃刀に反した状態と認識される。

音楽の美しさと複雑性: 情報圧縮率仮説 - Complex simplicity is the best for music.

“Entia non sunt multiplicanto praeter necessitatem.” The Lex Parsimoniae, otherwise known as the Law of Economy or Occam’s Razor (1288-1348).

The entire life-long sensory data stream of a human is enormous. The adaptive solution to this problem of scale is information compression, thought to have evolved to better handle, interpret and store sensory data. In modern humans highly sophisticated information compression is clearly manifest in philosophical, mathematical and scientific insights.

For example, the Laws of Physics explain apparently complex observations with simple rules. Deep cognitive insights are reported as intrinsically satisfying, implying that at some point in evolution, the practice of successful information compression became linked to the physiological reward system. I hypothesise that the establishment of this "compression and pleasure" connection paved the way for musical appreciation, which subsequently became free (perhaps even inevitable) to emerge once audio compression had become intrinsically pleasurable in its own right.

BioMed Centralから、珍しく『芸術性』に関するコルモゴロフ複雑性との斬新な仮説がパブリッシュされていたので、簡単に紹介します。

結論から言うと、普遍的な名曲とされている音楽ほど、それ以外の楽曲に比べ高い情報圧縮率を有しているとのこと。つまり、原音の複雑さに対し、主観者が認知する過程で対象情報が単純化される度合いが高ければ高いほど、その音楽を心地よく感じるのではないかという仮説。


もちろんこれには、「美」という感覚が、人間の認知科学の未知の領域や、もっと複雑な経験則によって生じるものであるという前置きがあってのことですが、著者は「一定の傾向」を計測する一つの方法論を提示しています。



仮説の検証段階においては、比較サンプルとする二つの同程度の長さの楽曲を配置。両者とも均等な条件の下に"Loseless" Audio化を施されているのですが、ここで、楽曲特有の音の符号状態に起因する圧縮率の差異が生じます。


ロスレスオーディオという技術自体が人間の聴覚を一定の基準に設定されたものである為、これをそのまま、原音の複雑性に対する人の認知上の情報圧縮率と置き換えるというもので、ここに些か乱暴さを感じる人もいそうですが、例えばベートーヴェンの交響曲と、テクノやトランスといった音楽、そしてランダムノイズの圧縮率は、それぞれ順に有意な圧縮率の下降傾向が確認出来るそうです。

（※ そもそも演奏形態や音色が与えるカリキュレーティングへの影響も無視できないが、ここでは検証されていない。）

これは「美と秩序性」の関係性に帰結する単純な問題であるかのように見えますが、そもそも音楽という「経時的な現象」を評価する際に、人間はその音の刺激の連続性に触発されているだけではなく、その音の全体的な構造を計算し、脳内で一塊のものとして圧縮していく過程が、審美的な快感に結びつけられていくという視点において、一種の定量的な検証手法を呈示しようとする実験なのです。

音楽や芸術の美しさ、刺激の傾向といったものに、定量的な脳の計算プロセスを照合してプロダクションが行われるようになる可能性をも示唆するものでしょう。そしてこれは、物語などの叙述体系（システマ）に関する考察や、あらゆる学術分野の表現形態、技術習得の方法論にも応用可能かもしれません。


そもそも、人の意識が外部刺激の複雑性を、認知的に単純なパターンに引き入れようとするプロセスで、その度合いを定量的なアトラクター（吸引力）で示すことが出来るのだとしたら、その意味するところは何なのか。という疑問に行き着きます。

例えば「ノイズ」と「そうでないもの（意味のあるもの）」を見分けるのは、知能体系の生存競争において獲得されてきた能力の一つの特質と言えるでしょう。



前置きされているように、価値の多様化した現在において、必ずしも圧縮率に依存した審美的認知が行われているとは限らなくて、たとえば、ノイズ・ミュージックにおいて、そのエンコードされがたい情報の複雑性そのものが、ある種の嗜好性を持つグループに特有の刺激反応を喚起することもある。

（※ この議論には、哲学的にはオッカムの批判も含む集団と個体の個別性についての質料形相論的・エネルギー論的な展開も絡めそう。）


さらに原文では、アインシュタインなどの科学的洞察に見る、五感認知の情報圧縮可能性と芸術的な美しさについても言及しているほか、音楽認知の生物学的起源との競合（生理的報酬や和音処理）についても触れられていて興味深いものです。



もう一つ、音楽を要素間の組成物として見た場合、符号化された楽曲の持つ情報が、人間が音楽として認知する楽曲自体に対して、どの程度の複雑さを有しているのか。その尺度となる指標として『コルモゴロフ複雑性』の概念が利用できます。


これはある記述言語において、特定の表現対象が最小サイズの情報量となるプログラム（同時にデータの圧縮限界も示す）を指すもので、記事上部のマンデルブロ集合の一部は、その一例として挙げたもの。（ファイルサイズ140,000bitに対して、それを記述するプログラム情報量は遥かに小さい。）

例えば今回の実験に関しては、カイリー・ミノーグの曲が、ベートーヴェンの交響曲第三番よりも『低コルモゴロフ複雑性を持つ』との表現が為されています。



フラクタル・アートの例をとってもわかるように、コルモゴロフ複雑性は、任意の情報形態や表現物について、人間の抱く感情の非可算性といったものに深く結びついているように思われる概念であり、それ自体が計算不能性を有するという興味深い事実があります。(任意の記号列に対して、実効性のあるコルモゴロフ複雑性を直接導出することは出来ない。)


またコルモゴロフ複雑性は、それが帰属する記述言語、万能計算機が違ったとしても、その計算機同士のエミュレート可能性から、複雑性には定数分の差異しかもたらさないという性質があり、これは主観と客観のパースペクティブの同一性や認知計量の概念に関連づけられそう。

（※ コルモゴロフ複雑性によるデータ圧縮理論は、実際に人の扱う記号体系が、全ての可能な記述言語に対して、ごく小さい領域に偏在していることも示唆している。）



人間が操作する『偏った』記述体系の島において、音楽や芸術という刺激形態が担うシステムと実効性。それはセイレーンの歌のように、人の意識を「現実の違う側面」へと誘（いざな）う本性を隠し持ったものなのか。或は茫洋たる意味論の大海に浮かべた、虹色に輝く貝殻の一片に過ぎないのか。

もしかしたらそれこそが、純粋科学の限界に対して、人の心の真実を映し出す為に差し伸べられた手なのかもしれない。

米国防総省の科学諮問グループが先日、全国民の遺伝子地図の集約を提案。国民の健康管理や医療費抑制といった目標を掲げながら、その軍事利用までをも含めた構想をまとめました。

軍の健康システム(MHS)の遺伝子地図利用についての構想は、主に非営利の情報管理会社、MITRE社のJason氏によるもの。『The $100 Genome』と名付けられたこのレポートでは、軍に従事する全ての人間のDNAシーケンスデータを一括管理し、個人ゲノムのphenotype - 表現型（遺伝子の形質・特性で、環境の影響を受ける）を分類。

例えば汚染環境への耐性、怪我の治療への利用、心理病因の発症率などを評価して適材適所を試みるといったもので、健康管理としての側面が強いもの。ただ、軍事力の下に個人の遺伝情報が置かれることのリスクと、抵抗は不可避。行く行くはこうしたゲノミクスに基づく軍事力強化（トレーニング、能力開発）への応用は免れないと見られ、今後細かな法整備や倫理上のルールを制定する必要があるでしょう。



ただし、DNAテストによる病理判定は技術的にはまだまだ発展途上にあり、多くの論争の渦中にあるので、直ちに"Military Genomics"のような構想が実行に移されるとは考え難いのが実情。しかしJASON氏は、国防総省の執行力が、それらの問題をカヴァーするはずだと主張している模様。


しかし、広く認知されている複合遺伝子疾患のモデル [common-disease common-variant model (CD-CV仮説)]は十分ではなく、GWAS（大規模な遺伝子マーカーの比較)の意義、病理の遺伝因子を再評価するべきではないかという、従来のゲノミクスの方法論の問題点も提起されています。

（※ 数千万件単位の遺伝子検定を行うと、多重テストにより大量の有意性のない遺伝子マーカーが検出されるなど。）
